Typical mix of shops and restaurants in an open-air, walk-through setting. I had to go there to find an eyeglasses shop for an emergency repair to my glasses and was given very kind help from a wonderful staff at the OPSM shop. She went out of her way to repair my glasses and didn't charge me for her efforts.

Visited a few times during my stay in Darwin, used it more as a thorough fare to go somewhere else, always seemed deserted and a bit neglected.

We enjoyed spending time viewing all that the mall had to offer including Smith Street at each end. All new to us, my wife in her element with the shops while I wandered viewing the architecture and monuments and enjoyed a pedicure and foot massage. We certainly parted with more money than intended but no regrets. The Mall wasn't very busy, fellow passengers from the ship seemed to outnumber other before lunchtime. Shame that the water fountain wasn't working.

Walking along the Mall is a typical city experience. With the usual array of shops and eateries, it is pleasant enough. It can be hot in the middle of the day. There is plenty of street art nearby too, if that is your fancy.

We spent quite a few breakfasts at The Mall because it was close to our hotel and had a selections of eateries.

We used Neuron e-scooters to get to a few places which is great for tourists or city commuters but be aware you can't ride in No Go Zones and The Mall is one of them. This is fine as you park the e-scooter when you arrive, and use it again when you are moving on. (There are other No Go zones so check with Neuron website before putting the app on your phone.)

The Mall in contrast is a quiet part of town and no scooters allowed because of higher volume of pedestrian traffic and kids in a play area.

As a tourist, I noticed it got me around Central Darwin City, The Esplanade, Waterfront and Cullen Bay. That's all we needed.

there are ride shares and e bikes if you plan to go further.

Not a great place. It practically dead most of the time except for the Govt workers getting lunch. It seems the waterfornt took its place. Early mornings and afternoons you can be accosted or witness some of the less desirable elements in full force. Pretty scary at times, Needs a new draw card but dont know what that might be.

I've been to all the capital cities across Australia, as well as smaller towns, and for a capital this place is unfortunately uneventful and needs a revamp to rejuvenate the city area. I know COVID-19 hit, but maybe it would be a good time for some authorities to think how to rejuvenate it once the restrictions and borders are lifted, especially since it is the closest city and transit spot to Asia, and make it more attractive to not just tourists, but locals as well.

Had a walk through this morning and enjoyed the open feel. Just amazed that on a Monday, there was hardly anyone around town. Worth having a stroll through.

Actually I like this place as it is a pesestrian Mall which means it has free flowing ventilation. There are several shops which sell good souvenirs like the Darwin gift shop and NT. There is also a decent bookshop,Darwin Bookshop which I really appreciate very much as being an avid reader. There are several eateries with reasonable prices. Nice experience.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO ON ONE OF THE EXPENSIVE SHORE EXCURSIONS TO APPRECIATE DARWIN

Bad night at the ship’s casino? Or maybe you just got the email from home telling of junior parking the LANDCRUISER in the neighbour’s living room. Alternatively perhaps trying to match those dudes from Wagga cocktail to cocktail yesterday wasn’t such a good idea after the 14th. Whatever the cause – you are feeling a bit skint this morning on arrival at DARWIN – making you consider that a zero or small cost trip ashore may be the go.
Help is on hand – the trip up and around the CTY MALL could consume the whole day – or at least half the day if you consider important being back on board for the yummy buffet luncheon (after which you will have plenty of time to check out the very-near-ship WATERFRONT precinct which TRIPADVISOR has a separate user review page).

GETTING THERE – is a breeze. For a start you can catch frequent shuttles from just outside the CRUISE TERMINAL up to the TOURIST CENTRE which is just short of THE MALL. But if you are a heavy duty tightwad like me you will WALK IT – 10-15minutes, which also allows you to check out some feature of the WATERFRONT PRECINCT – simply follow the frequent “TO CITY’ signs. They will point you to a lift on the corner of one of the finger wharf type buildings; go to level 5: walk along the outside top to the pedestrian bridge at the far end which takes you across to the low plateau on which the compact ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE and the CBD are located. The MALL is 5 minutes walk straight ahead.
In this 5 minutes you will cross the treed ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE which has many fine old buildings worth exploring plus 2 big modern white buildings – THE SUPREME COURT and the PARLIAMENTARY BUILDING. The BUS INTERCHANGE and the TOURIST CENTRE are also at the near-CBD edge of this zone.

THE MALL is a 250m pedestrianised section of SMITH ST, one of DARWIN’s main drags. It has the expected range of retailing and refreshment joints, plenty of shade and seats plus some big portable evaporative coolers which were very effective in the heat and humidity. Free WIFI has long been a feature of THE MALL.

Exploring the rest of the CBD from here is easy. CAVENAGH ST, one of the main drags, is parallel one to the right and the city end is less than 400m further on.
Of interest to animal freaks who have shied at the cost of ship-excursions to distant animal parks is nearby CROCOSAURUS (turn left from the end of THE MALL, go one block, turn right along MITCHELL ST and walk 300m) which has a giant croc in a tank (you can join it!!) and a fair bit of other NT exotic fauna.

One block left from MITCHELL ST gets you to long, narrow BICENTENNIAL PARK with lots paths, seats, shade trees, WW2 memorabilia and good views over expansive BEAGLE INLET. You can walk back thru this park towards the ship.

TIPS
- If you are looking for a FREE PC, these are available in the NT LIBRARY inside the PARLIAMENTARY BUILDING in the administrative zone.
- it's worth checking online bus timetables because it is possible to catch a service bus to a lot of DARWIN's attractions like the BOTANIC GARDENS and MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY OF THE NT (both free admission) for a fraction of the price for the same things charged by the ship's shore excursions - and be back on board well before sailing. Note too there is a service bus goes down around the WATERFRONT precinct from the BUS INTERCHANGE, but I remember an hourly service which may not fit cruisers' schedules.
