Drove out to look at the Owen Springs Homestead. Old remains on a 4 wheel drive track. Worth a look as is the reserve and camping ground areas. Didn’t trek that far inland but worth the drive.

Its a drought, so no water and track is nice and solid. Crossing the "river" is easy though high clearance 4x4 is a good idea. really pretty camping spots along the Hugh River, though not a drop of water just now. Loved the old homestead- in ruins now, but info is good with plans of original. Just a drive through this time, but when a bit of water it will be amazing.

An important site in Australian history, this first cattle station established in Central Australia played an important role in establishing the Overland telegraph, and one can see the ruins of the original old homestead.

We went to the Alice Springs visitors information centre and rented the car from there. In the Northern Territory all the car rentals have a 100 km a day limit. But if you rented at the visitors centre, there is no limit. we rented a Toyota RAV4, which is enough for 4WD in the Owen Spring Reserve and Rainbow Valley Reserve. It is a beautiful day in July, the dry season in NT. We set off at noon but if you prefer you can start a bit earlier in the morning. We drove along the Larapinta Drive toward South. It takes about 50 minutes to arrive at the entrance to Owen Springs Reserve. The track there are pretty versatile, dry river beds, sandy routes, some ups and downs, but all manageable so you don't really need self-rescue gears. We drove all the way east, took about two hours to run across it. Coming out of the exit on to Stuart Hwy, you can turn right and drive 11kms to continue on to Rainbow Valley Reserve. So it is roughly a one day trip, with about 100km of 4WD experience. The scenic views are spectacular!

We learned how to dot paint, plus saw an ancient rock map! A wonderful setting surrounded by original flora and rock art.

Plenty of landmarks to visit and enjoy from Alice. We headed out to Glen Helen via the Reserve and we really enjoyed a great easy day trip out of town.

Owen Springs Reserve is an easy day trip from Alice Springs if you just want to do the circuit and see some wonderful views, or a great place to spend one or a few nights in true bush camping with no set sites and no pesky facilities. Lots of opportunities for hiking and fantastic scenery.

We plan to visit the park in late April travelling in a convoy of a Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Ute and a VW Passat All Wheel Drive SUV Wagon. Though having no low range gear, the VW SUV has ground clearance of 174mm which is quite good comparing to 205mm of the Triton. I wish to know whether there are sections of soft sand or steep hill climbs and extremely rugged terrains on the track that require driving in low range. Is it safe to travel this track in such convoy?

We were lucky and the whole track was solid, with some sand and dirt track. River crossings were dry and again solid in March. We did no have any steep climbs on main tracks, but 4 wheel drive with reasonable clearance would still be needed even with solid track. If you want more challenging tracks, there are off tracks within park. Convoy should not be a problem.
