Our Lady of La Vang pilgrimage center,
- Our Lady of La Vang is the name that Vietnamese Catholics refer to the event of Mary appearing in a period when Catholicism was persecuted in Vietnam. La Vang today is a holy place and an important pilgrimage place for Vietnamese Catholics, located in Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province, Hue Archdiocese. Believers believe that Lady Mary manifested in this area in 1798. A church was built near three banyan trees, where they believed that Lady Mary appeared and was recognized as the Emirate of the Holy See by the Holy See. La Vang cathedral since 1961.
- This is one of three Catholic pilgrimage centers recognized by the current Vietnamese government.
- August 20, 1928, on the occasion of the La Vang Congress 9. This cathedral was restored in 1959. During the meeting on April 13, 1961, the Conference of Vietnamese Bishops (South) unanimously decided: La Vang is the National Mother Center. During the Summer War of 1972, the bombs completely destroyed the basilica, leaving only the patchy bell tower ruins. Since 1995, the bell tower and related works such as the Chapel of Our Lady (a corrugated iron roof behind the ancient tower), the Eucharistic Chapel (built in 2002), the Rosary Square, the Ritual, the Pilgrimage house ( built in 2004), 3 banyan trees (where Our Lady appeared) ... were repaired or newly built.
- In 2008, the Sanctuary was granted an additional 21 hectares of land to the religious activities of the people in Quang Tri province. According to Father James Le Si Hien (pastor of La Vang Mother Center), this is the ancient land that once belonged to the church (before 1975 was 23 hectares) and now returned.
- On August 15, 2012, the first stone was place to built the new Basilica. The church is in the process of construction, designed in the style of traditional Asian architecture of Vietnam, can accommodate 5,000 people.

フォンニャ日帰りツアーの一環で訪れました.2.5haもあると言われる広大な土地に、煉瓦造りのかつての聖堂が四方の一方の壁だけ残されたものと、水色でシスターたちが色々働いている建物、クリーム色の建物などがあり、更に青い屋根と白い壁が鮮やかな建物を建てている教会です。

Lieu mystique parle essentiellement aux catholiques. La plus grande représentation de la Vierge Marie est un peu kitsch et il y a une enorme église, qui ressemble à une pagode, est en cours de construction. Il y a une tour de l'église historique.

La Vang, thời xa xưa là vùng rừng núi hẻo lánh có nhiều cây lá vằng - một loại lá đun nước uống dùng cho bà đẻ rất lợi và mát sữa của dân miền Trung. La Vang được coi là đọc trại đi của "Lá vằng"
La Vang được coi là Thánh địa Công giáo và là điểm hành hương của Công giáo Việt Nam. Đây là nơi mà người Công giáo tin rằng Đức mẹ Maria đã hiện ra cứu độ người công giáo bị bức hại vào đời nhà Tây Sơn (1798). Nhà thờ La Vang được xây dựng (lần 3) dưới thời vua Khải Định và Bảo Đại mang phong cách Gothic giống như nhiều nhà thờ Công giáo khác tại Việt Nam. Năm 1961 nhà thờ La Vang được Vatican phong tước Tiểu Vương cung Thánh đường. Trong Mùa hè đỏ lửa 1972, nó bị tàn phá và giờ trở thành phế tích.
La Vang có lẽ là nơi duy nhất ở Việt Nam mà Đức Mẹ của người Công giáo có hình dạng một người phụ nữ Việt với khăn đóng áo dài. Năm 2012, nhà thờ La Vang mới được xây dựng và nghe nói khi hoàn thành, nó sẽ được Vatican phong tước Vương cung Thánh đường ngang với Sở Kiện ở Hà Nam, Phú Nhai ở Nam Định và Đức Bà ở Sài Gòn. Khác với 3 Vương cung thánh đường đã được phong, Vương cung thánh đường (tương lai) ở La Vang được xây dựng mang phong cách mái bằng của nhà rường Huế, mang hồn Việt.
Theo lời giới thiệu, Đức Mẹ mặc khăn đóng áo dài và Vương cung thánh đường theo phong cách Việt mang thông điệp đạo Công giáo hòa nhập với từng nơi nó hiện hữu. Không biết lời giới thiệu đó chính xác tới cỡ nào nhưng cá nhân mình thích cái thông điệp Đạo - Đời rất thân thiện này.
Phế tích Tiểu vương cung thánh đường trước đó người ta cũng định di chuyển đi vì nó mang phong cách kiến trúc Gothic không phù hợp với Vương cung thánh đường mới. Tuy nhiên với suy xét Mùa hè đỏ lửa 1972 không làm nó sụp đổ thì tại sao trong thời bình lại di chuyển để làm nó sụp đổ, Công đồng La Vang đã quyết định sẽ giữ lại nó và sau khi Vương cung Thánh đường (tương lai) hoàn thành sẽ cải tạo phế tích cho hài hòa với khung cảnh xung quanh.

If you are in Quang Tri, you must visit this place and Lady La Vang. The original building is still standing, mostly walls. They are rebuilding the church, but it looks like it will be years before it will finish.

We visited this shrine on the last day of our 8-day Easy Rider trip from Dalat (ending up in Hue). Thank you Lonely Planet, as their book on Vietnam writes about out of the way and interesting places to visit.
It was pouring outside, but the weather did not diminish the majesty of this place. Lots of heavy fighting occurred in Quang Tri province near Dong Ha and the DMZ. The original church was bombed during the battle and most of it is now gone. You can even still see the bullet holes on the sides of the church. One can imagine what the old church had looked like. Behind the 'old' church a new cathedral is being built, which I suspect will take another 5+ years to complete. In the meantime there is a most beautiful outdoor church being used for services.
Loved reading the history of this shrine and the miracle of our Lady coming to the people gathered there during their persecution. I'm so glad that the decision to keep the 'old' church in place was made, as it adds greatly to the ambience of the area.

A lot of construction work ongoing and it was fairly deserted when we got here. But the ruins of the old church and the shrine was interesting. Still it was quite a drive from Hue and I wouldn't recommend coming out all this way just for this shrine.

This was at the end of my DMZ tour and is well worth a visit the church was built in the countryside as the government as the time was killing the christens, this is a pilgramage site as a vison of the Holy Mother holding the baby Jesus was scene here. There is a huge new oriental style cathedral being built on a small hill behind the bombed out old church. there are various statues around the place and a church service was ongoing whilst i was there and was a very peaceful place... If you have the time well worth seeing,...

다낭에 오시는 천주교 신자 분들은 방문해보시기를 권합니다.
다만 거리가 조금 먼 것이 안타깝네요.
훼에서도 1시간정도 위로 더 올라가야 하기 때문에 다낭에서 한 3시간 정도 걸릴겁니다.
그래도 가는 길이 경치가 좋으니 그나마 위안이 되겠네요.

we will be staying in hue ... how far is La Vang? i will be traveling with a toddler and would like to know if there are any good places to eat and are there any decent restrooms in the area.
It's more than an hour driving to La Vang from Hue. For the rest, you should travel to Dong Ha city, which is about 18km far away from La Vang.

Hello Fanny - The Shrine is south of the town of Dong Ha, which is located in Quang Tri Province. I remember we went to the Quang Tri Citadel first, which is 15 km south of the town. Then we went another further 5 or so km south before turning off the road. The actual Shrine is located about 2 km off the main highway #1 to the west. There are signs for this site. If you are travelling north from Hue, it would probably be about 1 1/2 hours to travel there. We were on an Easy Rider tour, so actually didn't drive there, just went with our Guides.
I looked online but sorry, I could not find an actual street address for the shrine, but there is quite a bit of information to be found about this site.

Hey Edwin, I have taken part in a tour of Vietnam Catholic Tours in June 2017 to many places such as Shrine of Our Lady of La Vang, Phu Cam Cathedral in Central of Vietnam with the most suitable price (lower than 50$ for 1 day 1 person). If you dont want to follow tour plan, you can cantact them for many free advices. And if you ask me, I will tell you that is one of the most wonderful trip I have joined.
