Katra Masjid was built in the year 1724 by Nawab Murshidkl Quli Khan. His tomb also lies beneath one of the staircases of the structure. It's a brick structure, squarish in shape and had surrounding double storied cells with domes on too. Four minars was there on four corners of the structure. The structure was heavily damaged in a major earthquake in 1897.
We visited this place during our recent Murshidabad trip in mid January 2024. As we entered through the curated garden, two large watch towers at the corners was most visible. The tombed two storied building surrounding the mosque was glowing in the afternoon sun. These were used as mdrasa fir Islamic teachings. It's construction and design is completely unusual of a mosque ant it more looked as a fortress. The large square brick platform used for prayer, looked great. The main prayer hall was severely damaged in the earthquake and the entire roof is destroyed. The most heartening attraction of the place is the grave of Murshid Quli Khan. It is built under the Southern staircase and a iron net was built on top of the grave so that the dust from the visitors shoe can drop on the Nawab's grave. Such an unthinkable humility.
A must visit for travellers to Murshidabad.

Katra Mosque was built by the first Nawab of Bengal - Murshid Quli Khan, after whom the town of Murshidabad is named. The prayer area is huge, although this mosque is no longer used for namaz now. The structure has suffered nature's wrath a lot, some of the portions of the mosque have broken down. Still, the Katra mosque is worth a visit, while in Murshidabad.
It is said that many Hindu temples were demolished and the brick from those temples were used to build this mosque. To repent for this act, Murshid Quli Khan ordered that he should be buried just below the entrance to the mosque so that every time a person climbs the stairs to reach the mosque would cross over his body, their footsteps dust would help cleanse his sin.

An interesting historical site that was a mosque in its former life. It’s where the grave of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan (the first Nawab of Bengal) lies. Our guide walked us around and explained the history then showed us the earthquake damage that destroyed two of the domed roofs

The Katra Masjid is a former caravanserai, mosque and the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan. It was built between 1723 and 1724.[1] It is one of the largest caravanserais in the Indian subcontinent. It was built during the 18th century, when the early modern Bengal Subah was a major hub of trade in Eurasia. The Katra Masjid is located in the north eastern side of the city of Murshidabad, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The most striking feature of the structure are the two large corner towers having loopholes for musketry.

This is the oldest and most imposing islamic architecture at Murshidabad built by Nawab Murshid Kuli Khan. It is also the tomb of him.You should definitely visit this place to witness such a wonderful architecture and it is completely free of cost you don't have to pay a penny for entrance. Best time to visit is obviously winter but you can explore it anytime.
