Udayagiri Caves in Vidisha are ancient (3–4 centuries AD) and have intricate carvings...the rock-cut architecture and sculptors are marvels that leave visitors in awe and amazement. However, they need better care and protection from ASI.

History and heritage. It is amazing to see the craftsmanship that they had achieved thousands of years back.
There are no guides, so read and research about they before you reach.
You can see the Varaha-avatar statue from. the main road. But don't miss the Reclining Vishnu. The view from the top of the hill is also great, but is strenuous.

Udayagiri caves is 6 Kms from Vidisha.

There are 20 caves of Hindu and jain panthons. They were made during the Gupta period. They are partly rockcut and partly structural.

It is small town area, not too much restaurants.

this site is fully exploring by foots /walking only , no way to battery car or rikhwa etc

Ticket - Applicable

Must Have - proper shoes, easy cloths, hat / umbrella
Must Know- No food item allowed

Early Moring is the best time to visit here .

Not recommended for handicap or older visitors.

Most of caves are protected from Grill Gate , in which you can easily seen from Grill insiide the caves.

The rock cut cave temples of Udayagiri are believed to be sculpted in early 5th century during the Gupta dynasty’s rule, and are some of the oldest cave temples in India, these remarkable temples are known for their wonderful sculptures and carvings related to Hinduism and Jainism, apart from inscriptions about Gupta dynasty. A couple of them to Shaivism and Jainism. The sculptures and carvings in some caves have eroded over the years.

The most popular cave here is cave no.5 which has a huge figure of Vishnu’s third incarnation as Varaha (boar). There are extensive sculptures of various mythological figures across the panel.

The peculiarly shaped cave no.7 has a flat plate roof and is referred as Tawa cave. The cave is known for its inscriptions about Gupta kings. cave no. 10 has a semi dilapidated sculpture of Vishnu.

Cave no.12 is a small one and looks more like a niche. The sculpture carved on the rock is that of Narasimha, another incarnation of Vishnu.

Cave no.13 is another popular one with the sculpture of reclining Vishnu. Some of the other caves are Veena cave, Kumara cave and Amrita cave. The inscriptions in Amrita cave are in Brahmi and Nagari scripts.

Cave no. 20 is the only one dedicated to Jainism in Udayagiri.

This pre historic place is mysteriously exciting and makes you wonder about what is beneath those caves. But the place is spread around vast lands and walking around can be quite exacting. Best time to visit should be during milder temperatures and a nice place enjoyed

These caves are on a hillock with some steep steps when climbing up. Old persons better avoid it. The important places are situated on the base only. So you can purchase the tickets at the entrance, see the two places near to that and come to the exit place where other main attractions are there.

Since you have to climb the hillock and come down in this trek it is better that you visit this on an early morning. But even if you visit only the base it is enough. You won't miss much.

Only one restaurant is nearby I believe. Better bring your own snacks and water. Vidisha is just 10 minutes drive from here.

Most people just miss out on these caves even though they are not too far from the Sanchi Stupa. The best way to make the most of your visit here is to drive to the last caves that have a couple of sculptures, then climb up the path to the hill , walk along the top taking in the wonderful scenery all around and then down ...back to the road on the other side. And as you walk along the path don't miss the fossils. Some of the stones on the path have fossils and add that much more to the walk. The way down has a few more caves with interesting sculptures etched in them. And then there is the cave adjoining the road that is magnificent.
Udayagiri is a wonderful and beautiful place to be in and best done after the Stupa.....taking in the scenery and openness.

Some called it myth. I feel its un-explored history of then Legendary Indian Continent. Spread across large part of India, Majestical Madhya Pradesh has started viewng it seriously and this some of this treasure is open to commoners.

Will not give any specific sculpture details or how to go about and nearby hotels type of information here. Just trust my title and start exploring. You need around 10 days to get connected to work marvels done around here.
