The Ogyen Choling Heritage House and Museum are located in the beautiful Tang Valley, about a 1-hour drive from Jakar, Bumthang in Central Bhutan. While the Heritage House has excellent guest accommodation, we were staying in Jakar but enjoyed a wonderful lunch overlooking the gardens of the house.
Our main highlight was the Ogyen Choling Museum, established by the descendants of the ancient and religiously significant Ogyen Choling nagtshang. This building was reconstructed after the 1897 earthquake and is regarded as the most realistic representation of the living conditions of the Bhutanese religious nobility in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Having been to all the great museums of the world, I have become allergic to museums of all kinds, but this place has a special magic and authenticity not found in any other place. The exhibits, artwork, living quarters and granaries combine to deliver a true-life experience and it was hard to leave it behind, although the memories remain forever.
Our guide was a well-educated and historically knowledgeable young man named Phuntso Tenzin, himself a family member and an artist. This was a great experience as was the walk around the village after lunch.
Make sure you include this experience in your journey to Central Bhutan

It was a very peaceful and serene place. The care taker was very helpful and pleasant. We were told to sign on visitor log book and surprise to know that we were the only 2nd Singaporean to visit that museum.
The whole place was filled with olden days history when farmers and traders used to sell and buy items on that area. You can see tools and types of 'machine' they used harvest crops. The staircase can be steep and narrow, but every level show the living quarter from the past.

The museum is about a 30 minute drive from the main road in the little valley town. After crossing the river the road is very, very rough. If you do not have a bad back and can deal with the bumps, the museum is definitely worth it. This was the property of a major landlord who once had many surfs. The property has been in the same family for 21 generations and the artefacts relate directly to this place. The staircases are original and very steep. We found it well worthwhile to take the guide whose commentary was clear and succinct.

The trip through the Tang Valley is interesting albeit a rugged ride. Our purpose was to meet the owner of Ogyen Choling Palace, Kunzang Choden, a Bhutanese author of Circle of Karma and Dawg among others. Kunzang is the first Bhutanese woman to publish in English. After touring the museum, which is worth the trip on its own, we were served lunch in the cafe and had a wonderful encounter with Kunzang. She is a gentle but powerful woman and a joy to spend time with. This was one of the highlights of a magnificent trip!

We had the great, good fortune to visit Ogyen Choling in November 2018, including an overnight stay, and I recommend anyone who is lucky enough to get to Bhutan should include this in their tour. As soon as you cross the threshold into the courtyard, you will know you are in a very special place. Plan in advance to spend one night so you don't need to drive out and back in one day. This will give you more time to appreciate the atmosphere and the history of the medieval lifestyle that ended not that long ago -- 1950s . If you're in luck, your tour of the museum will be led by the woman (known locally as the Queen) whose family has lived here for generations. There is also the beautiful temple that has been preserved, and some local hiking trails. We are all lucky the family has been able to preserve this wonderful place, so go visit it!

This is a couple of hours drive outside of Bumthang town but worth it. The drive is interesting through farming areas. This museum is on top of a hill with nice views over the valley. A lot of displays depicting historical items from the country's history including farming implements etc. Very interesting. Apparently you can book a room and stay.I had lunch there outdoors besides a very impressive vegetable garden. Food was exceptional. A very pleasant day out.

The family of Ugyen Choling Palace has turned the complex into a museum to preserve it's legacy and provide a place for religious studies and research. This fascinating complex is located on the hilltop overlooking the villages and swiftly running rivers, different colours of farm with evergreen conifers covered the valley all over. The impressive and well-captioned exhibits offer real insights into the life style of a Bhutanese noble family.
