For hiking in the rain, in typhoon alert, I may not have had the best experience in the world in this park, but I still enjoyed it. Maisan Provincial Park is best known for its uniquely shaped mountains, reminiscent of horse ears, and spectacular scenery in all seasons. In addition to the beauty of the mountains, the park is also home to the mysterious Tapsa Temple, with its amazing hand-stacked stone towers. Hiking trails that wind through the park offer incredible panoramic views and rare tranquility, far from the usual crowds.

You must take the short hike to see the amazing 80+ stone pagodas on Horse Ear Mountain. The setting is so peaceful and the energy is so positive. Go as far up as you can to enjoy the view.

Amazing part with stunning views and beautiful temples. There are two entrances to the park, one on the north (closest to Jinan) and one on the south. There are shuttle buses to either entrance every 3 or 4 hours, depending on which entrance. I was late for the morning shuttle and decided to walk to the entrance. Overall it took me about four hours to walk to the North entrance, hike up to the pass, climb all the way up to the summit of the female peak and down again, cross down to and visit the Tabsa temple, have some fried ginseng, walk back up and down to the north entrance and back to the bus terminal. Waiting around for shuttle buses annoys me! :)

Just did a trip in April from Jeonju and thought of sharing my experience how the trip went.
First of all, I'd like to give a shout-out to Ana M for sharing very detailed information about transportation options to get to Maisan from Jeonju. It has been extremely helpful!!!
As much as we'd like to do the trip from the South Entrance to the North Entrance of Maisan as recommended by Ana, we didn't manage to catch the 9.45 am direct bus from Jeonju to Maisan South Entrance.
So we had to do the Jeonju > Jinan > Maisan option. The journey from Jeonju to Jinan takes approximately 1 hr and it costs KRW 4,400 per pax. Upon arriving at Jinan bus terminal, we just go to the counter and buy a bus ticket to Maisan -- it's a mini bus with 마이산 (Maisan) written on the display of the bus. The bus ticket costs KRW 1,000 per pax. At this point, we basically had no idea whether the bus was heading to the north or south entrance. ;-) and we thought the bus would drop us at Maisan park specifically...
It turned out that as with all local buses, the bus made several stops along the way and we weren't exactly sure where we should alight. Luckily, I could speak a little bit of Korean and I told the driver we were heading to Tapsa (the temple with stacked rocks). And he eventually dropped us at the Northern entrance and gave us directions on how to get to Tapsa. The northern entrance was rather quiet with not many visitors seen. We eventually managed to find our way to head to Tapsa and there were many many flights of stairs to conquer and slopes to conquer before we can eventually get to Tapsa. There appears to be an option to take a tram for part of that journey but eventually you'll still need to climb the stairs etc to get to Tapsa. While heading to Tapsa, there's also another temple along the way that you could pay a visit.
All in all, I think it took us about 1 hr (including stopping for photos and catching a breathe) to get to Tapsa.
Thereafter we continued our walk to the south entrance of the park. I must say that this path towards the south entrance was way easier than the one from the north entrance as it's most likely flat. Most of all, the view was really gorgeous!!! The path was lined with cherry blossom trees which were in full bloom at that time. So we made many photo stops along the way. There's also a lake along the way.
We then caught the 5 pm bus back to Jeonju, which took about 1.5 hrs and it costs KRW 3,100 per pax. The bus dropped us at the bus stop opposite Jeonju train station. If you miss the 5pm bus, fret not. You can still catch a bus to Jinan Bus Terminal. But do note that the bus back to Jinan Bus Terminal isn't that frequent actually. There are buses at 9:55 am, 10:50 am, 2:05 pm, 5:25 pm, 7:00 pm.
If your main intention is to visit Tapsa, I'd suggest to just take the bus to and from the South Entrance as it's a relatively easier walk to Tapsa compared to the path from the North Entrance. And the south entrance is also alot more happening than the north entrance when we were there, likely due to cherry blossom season.
The catch is that there are only three buses per day from Jinan Bus Terminal to the south entrance -- 9:30 am, 1:30 pm, 5:20 pm. So do plan accordingly. Nonetheless, you can always catch a taxi from the bus terminal to Maisan.
And, we had no regrets of doing the entire path from the north to the south entrance. :-)

From Jeonju, there are 2 ways to get to Maisan Park (Tapsa Temple)
Option 1 - Jeonju > Maisan Park (direct bus)
Direct bus to Maisan Park, it will leave you at the Southern Entrance of the park
Get the bus on the opposite side of the train station in Jeonju (bus stop 31102). Google Maps location is (35.8487774, 127.1606182)
The bus doesn’t have a number itself, but it’s an orange one.
When you get on the bus, don’t forget to tell the driver you are going to Maisan, so he will charge you the correct amount for your final destination (3500 wons)
By the time we went to Maisan, there were only 3 daily buses from bus stop 31102 running directly to the park. (1 hour, 09:45 / 15:20 / 18:00).
Option 2 - Jeonju > Jinan > Maisan Park
A. You have to go to Jeonju Intercity bus terminal to get a bus that will leave you at Jinan bus terminal (frequent buses, around 1h)
B. Once you get to Jinan bus station, you can either get a taxi or a bus to the park. If you are feeling adventurous you can walk to the park, that will be around 3km to reach the park lot for the Northern Entrance
From Maisan Park to Jeonju
If you want to come back directly to Jeonju from Maisan park, you need to get the only daily bus from the Southern entrance at 17:00, at the same bus stop that drop you off at the park when you come directly from Jeonju. (Close to Buddha statue)
I highly recommend you to hike from the Southern entrance to the Northern entrance. From the Northern entrance, there’s a bus stop close to the parking lot with hourly buses running to Jinan bus station (950 wons, 10 minutes)
Once you arrive at Jinan bus station, you can take another bus back to Jeonju Intercity bus Terminal (4200 won, frequent buses, 40min)
Another option, if you are feeling adventurous you can walk to Jinan bus station, that will be around 3km to reach the bus station from the parking lot at the Northern Entrance
