Homburg mines are one of those hidden gems in Saarland region. They are the biggest sandstone caves/mines made by men in Europe. They are little bit hidden, I recommend to park on parking 1 or 2 (for free) next to the ruins of the castle, the mines are located closeby. If you want English guided tour, you need to let them know in advance. Otherwise they give you the map, flyer, safety instruction and you will go explore by yourself, which was completely ok for us. The admission was 5€/adult. It was a nice experience.

Nice walk up to the caves from town. We took the German tour and it was very interesting. Entrance fee was Euro 5 per person. I noticed they had an English tour starting later in the day. I'm sure individualized tour can be organized.

Stayed at the Schlossberg hotel in Homburg. Wanted to do a little exploring so climbed down the hill to the mine. The mines were closed for years as the Ministry of Economics reconstructed and increased safety in the mines. As previous reviewers have indicated only a portion of the mines are open, they are man made, they were used in World War II, and they are worth a visit. We were able to have the English tour which was helpful.

Wir waren mit der Familie dort. Tatsächlich haben wir schon viel von den Höhlen gehört daher hatten wir auch eine riesen Erwartung. Leider sind die Höhlen aber kleiner als gedacht und es wurde viel Info verborgen. (Mir wurde erzählt, es gab Infos über verschiedene Stollen zur Unterkunft im Krieg).
Ich konnte jedoch nur 2 Infotafeln entdecken.
Eine Anreise von Merzig aus hat sich meiner Meinung nach leider nicht gelohnt. Wir waren in nicht einmal 15 Minuten durch.
Pluspunkt an die Freundlichkeit der Arbeiter vor Ort!

These caves are extremely interesting and our guide conducted the tour in both German and English. Not all of the vast expanse is open to the public but what is open is worth seeing. Inside there is evidence of where yellow sand was excavated, by hand, for the making of glass many centuries ago.
Access is via a set of steps, either up or down. There are a few steps inside as well.
Currently only 1 of 12 floors is open but there are plans to open more.
If you climb the steps when you come out the view over Homburg and the surrounding area is excellent.

We stopped here after spending the morning at a local autumn festival. The fortress ruins aren't impressive unless you can use your mind's eye to visualize what it looked like in it's prime....
The fortress sits on top of a dominating hill overlooking the entire area beneath it. The signs are in German but diagrams accompany the text...makes it easy to understand. We had a good time on a perfect fall afternoon!

They are not big but have a long history. They have even been used during World War II. Visit them on a rainy day when your in the neighbourhood, don't make a detour for them. Only a small portion of the caves are open to the public. You'll get a helmet at the entrance and a guide will tell the history of the caves, the castle and the origins of the stone in which the cave have been made.
On top of the caves are the ruins of an old castle. Both are nice to visit with children.

Leuke ervaring en lekker zelf met een kaart op pad. Verdwalen gaat niet, zo groot is het te bezichtigen deel niet. Met iets meer dan een uur waren wij wel klaar. Nivo 11 en 12 wel laag (1,5 meter hoog), gelukkig had ik met mijn 1,96 een helm op.
Wel lastig te vinden, je moet dus naast het hotel naar beneden met de trap. Staat niet heel goed aangegeven, als dat het enige minpunt is... prijs is vriendelijk, leuk voor een regenachtige dag.

Das mit Abstand beste Ausflugsziel in Homburg Saar, die Schlossberghöhlen. Ein System von bisher 12 erschossenen Ebenen von denen die Ebenen 10 bis 12 für Besucher freigegeben sind. Die Tour ist nach einer kurzen Einführung durch das Personal frei zum Begehen. Die Höhlen sind mit dem Tiefkeller der Karlsberg Brauerei verbunden und es wäre zu wünschen, dass irgendwann der Zugang von der Brauerei aus möglich wäre. Aus der Attraktion könnte man noch mehr machen. Homburg hat es erkannt und es finden zur Zeit Ideenwettbewerbe statt wie man die Höhlen für Besucher noch attraktiver gestalten kann.
