I found some information on the Ranch on Pinterest and decided to book a tour. Cost was $62 US/ adult and our guide Isaac was excellent! We learned so much about all the different animals and birds in their care, the process of rehabilitation release and how to be a conscientious traveller moving forward. If you want to tick the boxes of viewing Costa Rican critters, this is a great way.
Tour was about 2.5jours long. We took Uber to get there. Snacks provided and gift shop with proceeds helping the cause.

We did the Slothies & Coffees tour. Excellent. So much great information, and we were glad to support the mission of this organization. I would highly recommend a visit to Toucan Rescue Ranch.

Very impressed with the way they take care of injured animals. They keep the place clean, unlike many others. You can tell they really care about their animals. This is a true rescue facility. They will rehab and release all animals that it is possible to do so, unlike man so called rescue places that only want to keep animals for show.

We were lucky enough to take a tour of the Toucan Rescue Ranch on a recent trip to Costa Rica. At the outset, the staff was super accommodating with scheduling. Jocelyn, our tour guide, was fantastic. She was so knowledgeable and gave the tour switching back and forth between English and Spanish (to accommodate our multi-cultural family) seamlessly. She answered our many questions and was gracious enough to go over the allotted time for our tour and we didn't feel rushed at all. It was clear she is passionate about the mission of the organization and loves what she does. We hope to visit again sometime soon. I would encourage everyone to visit. It is a very unique experience that shouldn't be missed!

Costa Rica is a favorite spot of mine and has found this place on social media. Loved their mission and dedication to rehabilitation and re wilding and wanted badly to go and check it out. Finally had the opportunity this month and it lived up to every idea I had about the place.
They treat you like family here ! The cottage for the over night stay is incredibly cozy and well stocked. You’re right inside of the sanctuary area. The tour was very educational. Alejandra / Carole / / Dr Andres / Mattie and the other staff were so caring and insightful I can see why this place has been such a success.
Had gone for the 1 night experience and would definitely go back - hopefully for three weeks as a volunteer!
They also offer other tours and internships which include room and board for budding biologists / conservationists / vets.

I loved this place. I was a little worried it would be a silly petting zoo. It was the exact opposite. This is a legit rescue. Tour guide gave a comprehensive explanation of the origins of each rescue, the reasons some animals can't be returned to the wild and the rehabilitation steps to get animals fit for re-entry. Coffee and Slothies tour is one of the most memorable and educational activities I did in Costa Rica. Highly recommended. The walk took place on the grounds so it is appropriate for kids and elderly. Not too much walking. I didn't know there was a campaign against animal selfies. The tour guide explained the reasons why very well. I'm a convert! I expected there to be a hard sell for donations at the end because I'm sure it costs a fortune to treat these animals. There was not. I went to the website and made my own donation. You can taxi there for around $20 or take the bus which stops very close for less than $1!! Save money with the bus and donate it to the ranch!! All the photos came from my tour. The guide "assisted" by getting close to the cage when appropriate. Thank you!!!

The Toucan Rescue Ranch was a highlight of our trip to San Jose. Not far out of the city, we learnt a lot about the wildlife of Costa Rica, conservation efforts and were able to see sloths, macaws, toucans, spider monkeys, otters and other animals that can't be returned to the wild. A tremendous and inspiring facility with people who have a deep compassion for the animals. Would highly recommend a visit!

I visited Costa Rica for 9 days and Toucan Rescue Ranch was the highlight of my trip! I loved every minute of seeing the wildlife, especially the gorgeous sloths! The tour guide Andrea was so knowledgeable and kind, she used my phone to take wonderful pictures and videos of my favorite animals and told me about each ones back story.
The animals they are taking care of are rescued from the illegal pet trade, human or animal attacks, rescued orphans, or illness, with the goal to treat them and eventually release them back into the wild. They follow the Costa Rican law (a common sense one too) to never let visitors touch the animals. They take good care of the animals and when you visit you know your money is going to a good place that cares about the wildlife.
The staff was so friendly and welcoming, and the animals all had nice enclosures. There are three parts- the sanctuary, the rehabilitation area, and the education center. In the Sanctuary, I saw sloths, toucans, monkeys, parrots, macaws, an ocelot, owls, otter, and some animals I’d never even heard of before 😄 Part of my tour let me see the area (from a distance) where the orphaned baby sloth nursery/hospital is, it was magical to see the fluffy babies getting fed by staff! The education center is also where you can see the sloths during a tour as they climb around in the trees. The rehab clinic is off limits understandably, but my tour guide gave lots of information about how they work to save injured wildlife.
I would recommend TRR for anyone who loves wildlife, especially sloths and birds. It is a rescue center, not a zoo, and their first priority is for the animals welfare, not making money. It is a wonderful peek into how people are trying to save Costa Rican wildlife, a wonderful experience!

We had booked a tour for the ranch and it was awesome! Isaac was our guide and told us everything about the ranch itself and all the animals in there. You could see a lot of animals like sloths, spider monkeys, macaws .. and they told a lot about how they help those animals getting rewildered! Definitely a must visit!

How flat is the classic ranch walk? Are there hills or is it mostly flat terrain?

The terrain is mainly flat and the walk is not strenuous at all. There is a very slight decline to the visitors/info center. It is an easy and interesting tour.

You need to book in advance if you want to do a tour. There are a few different options. We organized a private tour that allowed us to have lunch with the owner and baby sloths.

Do you get to hold the sloth?
Toucan Rescue Ranch
San Josecito, Costa Rica
Hi. A common question! No, you do not get to hold any of the wildlife at our center. Our philosophy is to ensure that all rescued wildlife remain as happy and healthy as possible and being held by the public has proven to create stress for animals - including the chill sloth. We also want to promise that any animal brought to us has the best chance at being released back to their natural habitat, so we like to reduce touching to prevent domestication. However, you do get to learn tons of fun facts and stories about sloths and view them climbing, eating, and sometimes even using the toilet!
We hope you understand and come visit us!

This January we have the choice to visit at 2 pm. or the next day in the morning until lunch. What would be the best choice to see most of the baby sloths?
Any idea about traveling time fra San José?
Toucan Rescue Ranch
San Josecito, Costa Rica
Hi. So you have the option to do a 2pm tour or Breakfast with the Babies? If you are wanting some more time with sloths we suggest the Breakfast with the Babies option.

How far is this from the resort area of Guanacaste?

I think it is about five or six hours depending on where exactly you are. We flew into san jose so it was close and then we joirneyed to the mountains and then to guanacaste. It is about an hour flight in a small plane if that is in your budget. I think we paid about $200 to fly from guanacaste back over to fly out of san jose. Enjoy your trip!!
