This was a very difficult climb. Myself and my father climbed it. Both of us are experienced hikers and very fit. We climbed on a very wet day which I wouldn’t recommend. There is a lot of patches where the path disappeared and we had to keep trying to find it. When you’re close to the top there is a very steep ascent, you will have to scramble up over sharp rocks and boulders. This was very difficult when coming back. Overall it is a challenging hike but I’m sure one a dry day the views are second to none. We unfortunately had none of that. It took us 4.5 hours.

Started from the faha carpark by the grotto ,through sheep pastures up to the stony narrow walk along the edge of the valley . There's a bit of scrambling on the vertical rise from this point up to the top ,then a short walk along the top to the peak. Fab views on a clear day but it was very windy on the day we climbed ,and some parts are not for the faint hearted in windy conditions. I'm told the ascent from the other side is a little easier . Probably an hr less on the ascent and descent . We took it handy and it was approx 4.5 to 5 hrs up and down .

Absolutely stunning! Breath-taking views (which I partly saw on google as it was covered in clouds in a day we went there. Well marked so it is hard to get lost. The first part (app. 1,5km) can be slightly hard and long, but it gets better later

spectacular views - take the time to climb around everything that you see. From the top, you will have a great view - maybe a low cloud sitting between two ridges?

Our family of 4 started our Mount Brandon hike from the Baile Breac car park on a rainy day in July 2019. I'll say right away, that we did not reach the summit. I was disappointed, but I didn't want to push my family on if they were not feeling the hike that day. This was our 7th day in Ireland, with everyday being almost constant rain, and our 5th hike. We had hiked a little over an hour, had passed several crosses, when someone suggested maybe we had gone far enough. Knowing the best thing to do, always, is to not be control, I agreed with the decision to turn around. I've got to say though, the summit of Mount Brandon is still calling to me. :) Nevertheless, this is a beautiful hike through sheep fields, sometimes seemingly straight up vertically, with amazing views of the coastline. It was a cloudy day, so our views were constantly changing with the passing clouds and fleeting rays of sunlight. A magical pilgrimage trail, worth everyone's visit, no matter how far up you hike.

Really nice climb to the summit, with an easy to follow trail. Just go up by the grotto at the start and you can't go wrong. Varied terrain and beautiful views throughout, keeping things interesting for the 4 hours round trip. Highly recommended.

For experienced hikers, this was a moderate hike with a fabulous view of the southwest Irish coast at the summit. Coming from the south, it is a common pilgrimage walk with many stations of the cross along the way. The first few miles are an easy grade up through sheep pasture, the further up it becomes steep and rocky until the summit. To add difficulty and distance you could make the trek from the northeast, which comes steeply up across and between the nearby peaks. If you are hiking in the Dingle area I highly recommend this walk, especially if the weather is clear.

Is Mount Brandon do-able for children? We are visiting Kerry with my 7yr old and considering trying it. We are not really experienced hikers.

There are two routes up,the most scenic is from Faha outside the village of cloghane but best done in good weather.The other is from an baile breach which is on the road from dingle to slea head,you will turn right off this road signposted mount Brandon.Hope this helps
There seems to be a a differing opinion on the difficulty of the climb - I will have a 3 and 5 year old, will it be suitable for them?

The easiest route is from the west. It was no problem for an 8 year old in perfect weather. 8 year old is normal fit and doesn't do a lot of hiking. A 5 year old might be ok, but probably a bit tough/long for a 3 year old.
Is it advisable to hike the Mountain in January? Also, are there any camping sites there or nearby?
