This is a brilliant house to look around. The owners are working wonders to maintain the property. Lots of interesting information in each room. The grounds and peacocks are excellent. The grounds are really well tended but not manicured to within an inch of their lives - lovely. Some fabulous old trees.
Really is worth a visit.

Fabulous day out. We were welcomed warmly by Paddy and the team. A warm introduction to the house and then a self guided tour. The house is beautifully and authentically set out with details in every room outlining the history and use. As for the gardens, the only word is wow. Stunning location fabulously presented. Then a look around Gwydir chapel, such a lovely place full of history love and joy. Finished off with tea, coffee and cakes and a trawl through the gift items available to buy. Thankyou so much from the 8 crazy ladies and love to Mrs Slocombe and Ffalabalam.

What a fascinating place with so much history and saved from depiction by a couple whose enthusiasm passion and energy is amazing. More like a manor house than castle and now it is lived in it is coming back to life. Our tour had not left us very long to visit it but we hope to return.

I didn't really know what to expect on my visit to Gwydir Castle. A castle that doesn't really look like a castle more like an old house, but was I in for a surprise. The formal garden at the front of the house is lovely with peacocks roaming freely. You enter the house by a large wooden door and are transported back in time. So many rooms, with beautiful furniture full of character, paintings, wooden panelling, carvings and the most incredible fire places I have ever seen. The work that has gone into restoring this beautiful place so that future generations can enjoy it is incredible. It is a truly a magical place and a must for anyone interested in history.

The 'hidden gem' moniker is overused but absolutely appropriate in this case. Visitors expecting another largely ruined Welsh hilltop castle will be in for a surprise as it's actually a wonderfully preserved late medieval house set into a hillside. The current state of the property is massive testament to the efforts of the current owners, who evidently acquired a largely derelict building that had even been broken into and used for raves and have spent decades in patient restoration. Arguably their greatest achievement has been the reclaiming of wall panelling bought by Orson Welles and found languishing in the basement of a museum.
There were a scattering of other people when we visited but I doubt that the place ever gets truly crowded and this adds considerably to the enjoyment of what is a stunningly atmospheric 16th century home that has a couple of times even been graced by royalty. You will be left alone to explore and there is just enough information in each of the rooms to feel sufficiently enlightened. One of the upstairs rooms is a bedroom: maybe being called the Ghost Room was solely responsible for my reaction, but it did feel remarkably airless and spooky.
Outside are some pleasant but rather waterlogged gardens with a fine collection of peacocks. A number of the fir trees are dying, apparently from water saturation.

A true hidden treasure in Snowdonia, very atmospheric and peaceful, the owners Judy and Peter have rescued this wonderful place and are slowly returning it to its original glory, You can stay for a great B&B and I would recommend you read the book Judy has written Castles in the Air, abut how they found ,bought and started the restoration......GO ,VISIT, ENJOY

Had always thought this place was a BnB/Hotel (which it partly is) but had no idea you could pay to visit the house/grounds until we pulled up. We arrived quite late in the day so pretty much had the place to ourselves which is always nice. The house is gorgeous and we loved it's aesthetic. It's in various states of repair/disrepair and this does add to the charm if you like that kind of thing. Also enjoyed the vast amount of peacocks - don't think I've ever seen so many in one place!

What an interesting story and beautiful place. The kids loved the ghostly mysteries and the restoration story was so interesting. Peter and Judy brought the whole place to life with their anecdotes and tales.
I'm so glad we took a chance to pop in.

Great place to visit
We had a private visit, first I had to knock on a big wooden door to announce our arrival. Very warm welcome followed by a very interesting introduction about Gwydir Castle. Firstly a summary of the history and then all about the renovations that had and still need doing. They have done most of the renovations themselves. After we were given time to explore all of the property and the gardens. I have never seen so many peacocks I counted just over 20 but I had missed a few. We rounded off our visit with a cream tea which we all enjoyed very much

How long does it usually take to see around this castle?
marlene j

You could see it all in about 90 minutes but my advice would be to take your time and do it leisurely. You could easily make it last four hours, particularly if you include a stroll around the lovely gardens. My other tip would be to read Judy Corbetts book Castles in the Air before your visit.
Enjoy!

Yes. I can't recall the amount but it wasn't much and it goes toward the continuing restoration so you might contribute a little extra if you can. The tour is self-guided. One of the owners, Judy Corbett, has written a book titled "Castles in the Air" about the restoration; it's well-written, an easy and interesting read.
I need to get in touch with the people that own This castle Bc I want to learn the history Bc my family built this the wynns and so if any one knows how to get in touch please do tell me
