we downloaded a walk from the internet . Started by parking in Chepstow where none of the contactless payment machines were working. Found enough change after using all machines for card payment and getting void tickets.
Followed map and that was a mistake as it states to ignore the signs and use open access land, You cannot do this as where it states climb over gate/go through stile it has now been blocked off.
We went back to the tourist information centre obtained a free new map and followed the Oofa Dyke path.
It is an amazing walk and the church is a stunning place to visit. The map and everything we have seen online state that the lower path back is closed, it is not. Its passable and the boulders are quite large however I would not want to do it when wet of icy. By following the lower path back it make a nearly circular walk. On the lower path follow the red arrows as this is the correct route.
Parking is cheap in Chepstow, Plenty of coffee shops to get your coffee or cake reward on the way back to the car. Castle looks amazing next to the river as well as the England Wales border on the bridge/

Clinging to the side of the Wye valley the steep woods of Lancaut are a great place to walk. Well marked paths lead down from a few parking places on Lancaut Lane to an ancient ruined church on the banks of the river. Hawks, kestrels and even Ravens can be seen. Well worth the steep climb back up.

Beautiful place to spend a few hours or entire day. Some parts of the trails are quite steep, but worth the effort. The car park on Lancaut Lane was full the day I was there, though I didn't actually see any other people in the 2 hours I was there.

OMG! This is walk 6 in my OS 'Wye Valley and Forest of Dean outstanding circular walks' Its down as a short walk on generally clear paths' and does warn you to 'take care' when 'scrambling over the chaos of boulders' as you go downwards through the woods. However, nothing quite prepared me for these large boulders. I am quite fit, it was a dry day and I had trainers on. I do have a bit of a dodgy shoulder but otherwise I am fairly robust on walks. I was effing and blinding across the whole of the boulder field. I basically crossed it on my bottom but my husband was mostly walking across the rocks and one slip/loss of balance could have been disasterous..a long fall down in places. It felt like it was a head injury or broken bone waiting to happen. Not for the faint hearted!

Parking is free. We went on the Lancaut walk. This is steep and downhill for 100% of the walk till the chapel. The chapel itself is a stone roofless ruin. My wife liked it more than me. Views of the muddy river can be admired for 2 mins. Red deer were seen on the opposite bank. We went through Lancaut woods. The ultimate muddy path. Definitely wellies needed. Our walking shoes were caked in mud. The path flattens for a bit through the woods. One part of the path is completely blocked by a fallen tree and the bank is eroded so we walked back up and around the tree. Thought about going back but thinking about climbing the steep path down put us off. We followed the red path after Boulder Scree. The path goes steeply uphill. Very tricky at certain parts. Very uneven slippery rocks and fallen trees. My wife moaned all the way up. At one point we had to almost crawl as nothing to hold on to. Eventually we reached the top and the walked back to the car park. We are unlikely to do it again. Took us about 2.5 hours with a couple of short stops. I suppose it might be fun if one is prepared for all the mud and uneven path. Wellies for the mud but definitely not for the rocky uphill part (wellies would make the walk uphill at the rocky part dangerous) and absolutely not a walk for the Converses.

This is quite an arduous walk down from the road so take your time. There are ancient forests and riverbank tracks. We saw deer in the fields. The 1000 year old chapel is peaceful and interesting with 17th centre gravestones. It is a great place for your picnic.

Get up close to the River Wye in the valley or look down on it from above. See the mud slopes at low tide, try and comprehend the quantity of water that would fill the valley at high tide! The nature reserve has a sign-posted walk. It is a woodland footpath, with steep steps in places. The lower footpath has a local closure order in place at the moment due to a landslip and safety reasons, however not sure when this will be reopened. There is still a short walk available from the lane down to the river and a small church ruin (there is a sweet dedication tombstone inside). Old quarries, viewpoints, river and woodland birds are likely here. Very calm and tranquil. Ample parking for several cars is available on grass clearings half-way up the lane to Lancaut. No other facilities (which is to be expected).

A quiet part of the river with a ruined church, with the tide in this is the definition of picturesque. A bit of a climb down from the parking area, but worth it. Car park can sometimes be full of climbers.

Lancaut has three attractions - the nature reserve, challenging walks, and a ruined chapel on the banks of the River Wye.
Car parking is free, but you will need good walking boots and plenty of nerve if conditions are wet, cold or wintry and you choose to explore further than the church and the wooded reserve.
Lancaut draws you on, and as we discovered the Ordnance Survey does not warn you about the rocky scree or the steepness of the climb to get around the abandoned quarry (now a popular rock climbing area).
It's all worth it, however. The chapel (and the abandoned village now buried beneath the turf and trees) is within the horseshoe bend north of Chepstow, and the mud banks occasionally attract seals to bask between fishing trips.
As for pronunciation, Lancaut is correctly "Lan' (as in land)-caught".
But definitely, go prepared for a tough climb if you plan to make use of the looping footpaths.

Lovely place to walk and enjoy some nice scenery. Would advise to go on a nice day as it makes everything look brighter. Its steep in certain areas. Nice to take a picnic or flask of tea to enjoy half way!
