The owners are doing a great job restoring the mill although i doubt it will ever run again. open day visit finished with a complementary ice cream. well done

A most interesting historical mill and a sole remainer of many that once flourished in the area. Visited on an open day when the owners provided an informative insight into it's former workings.. Worth seeing if given the opportunity.

Very friendly and informative team, nice bit of local history. I visited on an open day so check first if they are open all year

Takes a bit of finding but is like stepping back into the past.The history of this place is well explained and gives a glimpse of how important the miller was in the past.

We were staying at the fabulous Welsh Gatehouse which is a short walk away and the mill was having its open day. Well rpeserved and fascinating place to visit.

Open day was very interesting to see how much work the owners have done with the old mill, admission was free. Well worth a visit

We've often walked in the area around the mill and wondered what it was like inside, so were delighted to have a chance to visit it on one of its open weekends.
The mill has not been restored at all so it is not a slick conventional 'attraction', but is incredibly atmospheric. The owner and his wife are so knowledgeable they really bring the place & its past to life, and the other 'front of house' staff are welcoming and enthusiastic. Excellent information panels and some fascinating photos.
No charge to look round, although I would have been happy to put something in a collection box if there had been one. In fact we went 2 days running as we wanted friends to see it.
The National Mills website (quoted as part of this review) gives contact details so that you can check open days. Easy to get to with a car, otherwise a fair walk from bus stops on the main road if you are fit!

It is National Mills Week and Mathern Mill was open to the public today. It is not a working mill but has the remains of the original mill wheel and mill race as well as a good deal of the gears and grindstones. The old Victorian steam engine that drove the mill when the wheel became defunct is no longer there. The current owners told us it had either been bought by the Watts family in Lydney before WW 2 or broken up for scrap during WW 2. There are some interesting visual and audio aids.
