The Gangotri Temple is a truly remarkable place, nestled in the stunning Garhwal Himalayas. As one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India, it offers a serene and spiritually uplifting experience that’s hard to match.
The temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, and its location near the source of the sacred Ganges River adds to its divine charm. The views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks and the pristine, flowing waters of the Ganges create an atmosphere of tranquility and awe.
The temple itself is beautifully constructed with traditional architecture, and the atmosphere inside is deeply spiritual. Participating in the aarti (rituals) here is a moving experience, with the prayers and chants echoing through the mountains.
The journey to Gangotri can be quite an adventure, with winding roads and high altitudes, but it’s well worth it for the sense of peace and connection you’ll find. The local community is welcoming and the services around the temple cater well to the needs of pilgrims.
Overall, visiting Gangotri Temple is a profound experience for anyone seeking spiritual solace and a chance to connect with one of the most sacred rivers in India. I highly recommend making the journey if you have the opportunity.

The highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga is one of the four Chota Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. (after Yamnotri)
The holy river Bhagirathi, which is one of the two head-streams of Ganga, flows alongside Gangotri Temple.
in the Gribh grih, The inner sanctorum has the idol of Goddess Ganga. It also contains the idols of Goddess Yamuna, Annapurna, Saraswati, and Lakshmi.
The idols of Bhagirath and the sage Adi Sankara complete the set of idols present inside the inner sanctum. There are four little temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman, and Bhagirathi.
Other than its divine atmosphere, Gangotri offers stunning vistas all around. According to Hindu legends, the most sacred of all rivers, the Ganga, descended from heaven to earth at Gangotri, when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from his locks. Shiva divided Ganga into 7 streams and saved Earth
The river Ganga originates at Gaumukh. Gaumukh is situated at the foot of Gangotri Glacier 19 km away from Gangotri and is accessible by trekking. After it originates from Gaumukh, the river is known as Bhagirathi and it acquires the name 'Ganga' after the river Alaknanda merges into it near the town of Devaprayag.
Gangotri Temple is built close to “Bhagirath Shila”. It is a pillar where King Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva to bear the descent of the River Ganga. Pilgrims collect the water from the pillar and take it to their homes

Visited the Gangotri temple by helicopter and had divine hassle free Darshan.
Don't forget to Perform the rituals on the bank of the Holy Ganga with the help of a pandit ji and you may pay Rs. 500 to Rs. 2100 as dakshina as per your faith&capacity. Trust me it's worth the while. And then go to the temple for darshan.
Also visit the Kalp Kedarnath mandir, Laxminarayan Temple, and the Hari Shila in the Ganges.

Even though Ganga starts about 18 km up in Himalayas, Gangotri is considered as the starting point of Ganga.
But Maa Ganga is called Bhagirathi in memory of the great king who was instrumental in bringing this holy river to the earth through his penance.
Maa Ganga remains in this abode till some time near Diwali and then goes down for six months .
We did sharadanjali and darpanam for our fore fathers on the banks of the river.
Also collected holy water from the river Bhagirathi/Ganga

Any visit to Chardham temples, the best time is October. No rushes at temples. The vehicle goes upto approx 300 mters. Then walk along numerous shops and small restaurants to the temple premises.Be in queue and have a beautiful darshan. There are ample space in the temple premises. There is a small counter selling khichdi prasad for Rs.50/- per plate. On the right side of the temple the Bhagirathi river is flowing.Along the way witness the sage Bhagirath meditation temple. The water is extremally cold.On return from the temple on the main road have a adarshan of bhairo baba.

The temple is at the end of a short walk from the parking area. Clean and well maintained.
Walk up to the ghat and fill up the Bhagirathi water which is muddy but surprisingly clears up by next morning.
Also pay your obeience at the Shiva temple in the complex.
Use the selfie spot to record your visit or request a fellow traveller.
A must visit if you are on the Harsil circuit.

This heritage temple is built just on the bank of Ganga. Car can go up to the main gate. the view of the river is restricted around the temple due to buildings and shops.

What is the tempreture range in gangotri in mid june
Is it safe for elder peoples
Scritta in data 17 giugno 2018
When visited in its week of June , temperature in noon and afternoon was around 21 degrees. In evening and night , it tends to go down due to high altitude. However , based on our experience , no difficulty should be there. Now Aa monsoon is in swing , whether forecast must be checked during travel period.

A very interesting and useful account of Gaumukh trek. I want to trek in Sept. end 2018.
Due to knee pain, I want to ride pony. I read last year that one cannot ride pony to Bhojbasa. Does it hold true this year 2018 too?
Does GMVN provide rajai / enough woolen blankets, and do they have a toilet with running water?
Is the dormitory made from actual tent or is it concrete? I am trying to understand if it gets too cold at night.
Thanks

I went to gangotri temple only. For Gaumukh Trek , you may source information for Garwal mandal Vikas nigam ltd or tourism depptt , Govt of Uttarakhand.

When will the temple be opened and for how many months in an year? Can we go during off season also?
Scritta in data 15 ottobre 2016
This year it is opened till 31 October. this is literally off season. You can go but expect problems when snow fall occurs. Snow fall can occur usually after October. Temple however will be closed.
On the dusshera day the closing dates of all dhams is announced. Temple after 31 October 2016 will open in may 2017.

Hey there,
I am planning to go in June'15. Are there any lodges or hotels to stay in near Gangotri Temple. We are planning a trek to Gomukh and wish to complete it within a day and return back.
What are the tariffs and do we need to book in advance or it can be done once we reach there?
Scritta in data 9 maggio 2015
There are many small hotels and dharamsalas now near the Gangotri temple. But I think you have to phone and book them in advance.
The temple darshan including bathing in Bhagirathi and looking at nearby attractions will take about 3 hours.
So if you want to visit Gomukh( 14 kms from temple) then the best plan is to reach Gangotri before evening.Stay the night.
Next day early morning start for Gomukh by walk or horse and return by afternoon. Then visit the temple and return back. You can visit the temple first also, but getting back from Gomukh before dark is essential.
