Fascinating story!

We were totally fascinated by the story and history of these causeways linking the islands. First built in the early 1940’s mostly by Italian prisoners of war, the work took several years to complete. The shipwrecks you can see on the sides of the barriers represent a fascinating history of the wartime activity in this area of Scapa Flow. Now monitored by the Orkney government, the causeways will need upkeep and repairs. Such an interesting story.

Important wartime history

Essential viewing for wartime history, especially when seen with the scuttled ships (which formed the earlier barriers to Scapa Flow). Best seen at low tide so that more of the ships are visible.

Well they in interesting in their historical context, but they are not the most impressive of sights.
So when you've seen one, you've seen them all!

Very Clever Mr Churchill

Using POWs to build these barriers was a master stroke by the British PM at the time. This saved lives. Today the barriers form part of the causeways for the road network on Orkney. These barriers are immense and certainly took committed teams to build them. Importantly, they have continued to be used so the effort wasn’t wasted.

The churchill barriers which are now used as causeways are fascinating, the shipwrecks on either side still show us today why they were needed in the first place. Well worth visiting!

Crossed these several times on our recent trip to Orkney. Amazing history behind them, stop and read the information boards. Let’s hope Orkney council can preserve them and not replace.

Causeways & Wartime Barriers

Built during the Second World War primarily has barriers and naval defences to prevent enemy ships from entering Scapa Flow. Now the barriers are primarily causeways with roads linking the southern Orkney Islands with Mainland. There’s sunken ships visible in the waters, which were placed to act as blockships. There are viewpoints at various points at the end of the causeways to view the barriers and ships in their full glory.

A small piece of world war 2 history which has 4 different barriers to be seen or to cross, each having a slightly different view point to the next. Sunken boats, small beach, italian chapel, distillery shop all on the edge of the barriers, scapa flow each side. Great that these barriers also link the smaller islands to the mainland

4 barriers, all with different things to see. whether you are sight seeing or swimming in the sea, you will find something of interest.
