“great place to visit”

È un ottimo posto per visitare ed il migliore di tutti è gratuita. E' un punto ristoro e un sacco di cose da vedere, è possibile vedere le vecchie celle di prigione e hanno sempre qualcosa su quando ci siamo stati noi era un carro funebre sostando in vetro brutali ma interessante abbondante per tutta la famiglia

Questo era un luogo più divertente da visitare. Ho trovato che mi portava alle 1800 centinaia, come i detenuti erano tenute prima prova e la maggior parte sono stati condannati per essere spediti in Australia. C'è così tanto da gustare. e la caffetteria merita una visita. Molto vicino a questo è street tomba di San Patrizio e la Cattedrale merita una visita

Not so little gem in Downpatrick !!

We’ll set out museum in 3 sections - the history, the jail, and the Ballykinler hut with its various incarnations over the years.

Certainly didn’t expect to be well entertained for 3 hours !!

Very well worth a visit !!

And the staff were great as well

Delightful Downpatrick Day Trip to be had for free gratis at Down County Museum. If you usually drive past it, next time don't! Drop into the old Down Gaol…they will absolutely let you out again! Interesting artifacts, intriguing articles, informative attendants and helpful and well informed staff.

So much to see you won't want to leave

The visitor will be blown away as soon as they enter. This museum covers just about everything you would want to know about the area. There are sections detailing the history of this region (before it was known as County Down), as well as a reflection of the building's former role as the Down County Gaol. There is also a replica of a hut at Ballykinlar Military Camp, which includes testimonies from some of those who stayed there (including one who is related to a famous US actor).
The best bit for me, however, had to be the special exhibition that looked at the history of the seaside resort in County Down (which includes Bangor and Newcastle, two of my favourite places in Northern Ireland).
If you're ever lucky enough to find yourself in Downpatrick, this museum is well worth a visit.

Great museum
lug 2022
Lovely staff. We bought a couple of lovely jewellery pieces in the shop. You'd need a couple of days to see everything but what we managed was great.

A museum that has a lot of interesting history of this area

Down County Museum is a great little museum loaded with lots of history. Our guide, Mary, was extremely informative and just as sweet as can be. She was attentive to our small group's questions and was an absolute pleasure to follow around. Will definitely be coming back with more of my family some day!

Wonderful stories, well told - don't miss it

Interesting information, well presented and easy to read.

Staff were wonderful and spent time helping us take the next steps in our family history journey.

Accessible to those with mobility difficulties.

A Little Gem!

This is quite simply one of the most interesting museums I have ever visited! The building itself is admirable and the staff are enthusiastic and helpful. It is a definite must-see and I’d recommend at least 2 hours to make the most of what’s on offer. You can put the kids in one of the prison cells if they get bored but I honestly don’t think they will!

Well Worth A Visit

Very interesting trip around the museum and opened my mind more on the inclusion of all of our peoples in the 1798 rebellion and the conditions people fought wars in and died. All the staff that we met were extremely helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit with St Patrick’s grave only a couple of hundred yards away. Thanks for the experience.

Ballykilner History Hut

We found this little gem of a museum housed in a original gaol on an impromptu visit, free entry with free literature & books to take home, helpful & friendly staff & quaint coffee house & shop, our highlight was the replica ballykilner hut with so many local historical stories & artifacts on display, we had a guided tour with Mike who's knowledge & passion for the hut was amazing a really enjoyable family day out, highly recommended

Step back 200 years!

Excellent museum set in a Georgian gaol. Exhibits and displays tell you about it but the experience of closing yourself into a freezing, tiny cell on a dull November day tells you much more ... outside on the grim stone frontage you can see the sockets for the scaffold which once attracted hundreds of spectators for public hangings.

We law-abiding folk enjoyed the displays showing County Down life as it used to be. A more recent item is the Armstrong Hut from the vast Ballykinlar camp, which housed soldiers going to World Wars 1 and II, Irish internees of the 1920s, German PoWs, and post-war refugees. Inside each bed space tells the story of individual soldiers, surrounded by items from the period.

The staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful, and the guided tour of the Hut was fascinating. We spent more than two hours in the Museum and still didn't see everything -- but we'll be back!
