Just a small square area with some benches to sit on in the middle. It's surrounded by some restaurants, a cafe and has a pub there.

You'll probably end up here at some point - it joins to Stonegate which is one of the key streets.
Its a pretty square - nothing particularly "must see" but worth checking out anyway.

Beware of street singer!!! My family and I were sitting outside a pub having drinks, we were laughing and having a good time when one of the singers approached us. He demanded to know what we were saying about him and if we had anything to say to him. We were all dumbfounded as we were not talking about him. He crossed the full street so he could not have heard anything we were saying in the first place!
The singer preforming before him was very talented and was getting a lot of attention so this may have brought out the aggressive man’s insecurities but there was absolutely no reason to target us.
We left soon afterwards but this man clearly meant to intimidate us and was aggressive and confrontational with no reason to be, we were in no way interacting with him or talking about him which he bizarrely presumed.
Description: this man was wearing a denim jumpsuit with a black fanny pack and he hat on a blue hat. He was of Asian descent. Please be careful around this man as he has clear anger issues and confronts people without provocation. He seems to preform often so do not approach him as his behaviour is unpredictable.
Please rethink allowing this man performance space for his attitude. This is our first time in York and it’s really put us off ever returning if this incident is anything to go by.

Heading into St Helens Square through one of the beautiful streets you are immediately struck by the great architecture ,you can feel the history all around you,one of the most historic spots in York is St Helens Square.
This was the south western gate to Eboracum in Roman times ,known as Porta Praetorian ,up until the mid 18th century this was an open space and graveyard area ,the square developed over the following centuries and nowadays is one of the busiest areas of York .
The architecture here is superb,St Helens Church,Mansion House plus the old former bank buildings ,a great mix of Georgian and Victorian era buildings ,in and around the square are nice pubs, cafés,restaurants and shopping outlets ,it's just a great square to check out if you're planning a trip to York.

Once the gated south-western entrance to Roman Eboracum the land now occupied by St. Helen’s Square was developed in the mid eighteenth century from a graveyard into the elegant space it is today. At one end is the York Mansion House directly opposite St. Helen’s Church. The other sides are occupied by businesses including Terry’s Tea Rooms and a branch of the Ivy restaurant. During the summer it is the setting for professional busking. During our visit a baritone sang excerpts from West Side Story.

Stylish area of the city with grand buildings around the perimeter such as the mansion House. Betty's and the Ivy restaurants are in this place.

This isn’t really a square, more of a meeting of several roads with a wider pavements than normal! Betty’s Tea Rooms sit one one corner, and you’re never more than 50 yards from a bar, pub or eatery of some sort. It’s right in the centre, so wherever you wander, you will at some point stumble across it. The best thing about it is that, unusually for York, it’s free to access!!

Met een goede keuze aan restaurants is dit een heel aantrekkelijk plein in het hart van de stad. Wij lunchten bij The Yvi. Dit is nog niet te vinden in Tripadvisor. De kwaliteit daar is perfect. Zij kunnen zelfs een Steak Tartare bereiden op de Franse manier.

York is justifiably famous for its beautiful architecture and St Helen's Square is a perfect example of the type of architecture you will find in this most beautiful of city's.
My twin brother Stephen and I were wandering through the streets around St Heles Square where we were pub and bar hopping, in fact we were going to Lendal Cellars and Revolution Bar and passed through this beautiful square.
Architecture on all sides is stunning, such beautiful buildings and its busy, when we passed through it was so busy but with the great pubs, bars and restaurants not just in the square but in the streets leading into St Helen's Square hardly surprising that it's such a popular square.
Well worth checking out if your planning a trip to York.

The former grave-yard is now a popular meeting place with several restraints including world renowned Betty's Tea Room that has the ambiance of a bygone era. Afternoon tea is a special occasion
