My wife and I visited yesterday afternoon while waiting for our train from Temple Meads. The card machine was very slow and the girl serving us was very apologetic while another woman (who I assume is the manager) was rushing around between the bar and stockroom, swearing and ranting.

My wife and I were hoping for a quiet pint to relax before our train but the behaviour of the older member of staff made this difficult.

Heather is an absolutely legendary bar server! She was running the place all on her own on a busy Saturday night and serving everyone with a smile the whole time. Really bringing a lovely vibe to the place. Would definitely come again, Heather is brilliant!

Not far from the water on the Redcliffe side this one room pub on a corner has been serving the area very well for 400 odd years and continues (when the relaxation of Covid restrictions permit) to provide an easy going welcoming unpretentious place to drink well kept real ales. It seems to be popular with locals, students, office folk after work. You can’t miss the old plaque outside that simply and without flourish records the connection between Clarkson the vital and important anti- slavery campaigner and the support given to him by the then landlord Thompson. It will more than 6 months that we have not been able to call in for a drink last year but it’s due to reopen on 17.5.21 and we look forward to have good reason for time in Bristol soon after to enjoy the pub again.

This is my personal favourite pub in Bristol. It is dark and gloomy as traditional real ale bars should be. For the smokers and sunshine worshipers there is a good area to sit or smoke at the side. For a number of years it has been in the good pub guide, winning pub of the year on more than one occasion. It offers a CAMRA discount and a lot of the beers have not been seen in the Bristol area before. At the week ends it has live music and because it is next to the Bristol Fleece, people like to move from one to the other.

What a great real ale public house with on street (in alley) bench seating which even on a chilly March evening was bustling with hoards of revellers all have a great time. Wonderful people, relaxed and highly recommend.

I was recommended this place by a (long established) CAMRA buddy as a 'must visit' to see a real Bristol pub when on a beer tour of the town with one of my grown-up sons. It lived up that promise - it has a great atmosphere and they have a very good range of real ales on pump.
Certainly worth a visit - although not sure that I could spend a full evening there as I like to try a few less traditional ales.

It was a Sunday evening in early September and it was time for a timewarp, delivered through the medium of the Seven Stars.

The pub's own excellent website has very good information on the history, as does Wikipedia, such is the significance of the pub, so I'll let you read all that and just advise that the pub dates back from the late 1500s, which makes it sixteenth century, but referred to as seventeenth century in the pub website although what's a century between friends?

All you need to know is it's very old and the sort of pub that if you like cask ales and history, you'll probably get the feeling that if you visit, you've most certainly 'arrived'.

The pub has a few small rooms inside and a bar in the rough centre of it all. Tables and chairs are also outside on cobbled Thomas Street itself and these were full on this warm evening following a scorching day.

Given all that age and the flagons of ale consumed over time, the interior certainly looks 'lived in' and somewhat ramshackle but that's what you want on this history lesson. Having said that, it still needs to keep up with the times in terms of general comfort without getting too reliant on 'we're very old' as a reason for keeping it all 'as is.'

A woman on the other table was sharing knowledge to her cohorts, admittedly all men who were probably barely listening, that the women's toilets weren't very nice but I couldn't comment on the accuracy of this loaded statement as I'm neither a woman nor went to the toilet whilst I was there. However, if a true statement of fact, the SS needs to ensure all creature comforts are warm and welcoming, so to speak.

Rather than peruse the upkeep of the women's toilets, what I did do was have a couple of nice half pints of ales and took it all in. I imagined the history and conversations that had taken place over time and that in a city that has had mass redevelopment, including today, it's survived it all.

The longer it's here, the more anachronistic the SS appears which only makes it all the better, notwithstanding the need to remain contemporary in terms of comfort.

Now go and drink in the history.

Looked in at the Seven Stars as it is the closest pub to the Fleece (next door). I'm sure it has historical significance but it is really little more than a smelly, dingy drinkers pub which would probably be really quiet if it wasn't for the visiting music fans. It looked like there might have been a decent choice of drinks but we didn't hang around to try any of them,!
