The town is very charming. People were friendly in all the shops and restaurants. Food was delicious. There are many beautiful trails and lakes close by. The scenery is breathtaking!

Don’t bother fishing here. It’s packed with paddle boarders and kayakers. Was warned before coming that Canadian locals hate foreigners and they were right..we had a two separate local groups roll up on our fishing spot and park right where we were casting. Then they would look at us and cheer and clap every time they caught a fish after anchoring their boat right over our lines. Locals obviously don’t want anyone else fishing this water and will openly push you out without a care in the world. Alberta sucks.

All we did was drive through from Canmore on our way back to Calgary. I wish we had known about this area sooner, as we would have definitely kayaked the lake! The scenery was spectacular, and a few off-road short hikes were awesome. Part of the drive is on gravel, which is only bad because it stirs up dust and a lot of cars travel it.
Very back roads feeling, really worth it!

A nice 3.4 km hike one way to get as far as Point Campground from the parking lot. Lovely views of the lake and mountains along the way. This trail does have some area's with stumps and roots and shale rock to watch for.  It was near the end of May when I was there and there was still some places that had packed snow/ice and the lake was still frozen over in most spots.

There is a pit toilet near the campground. There are also a few outhouses at the parking lot.

If you go about 1km past the campground there is a waterfall. I didn't go any further than that and went back the way I came although this is another trail I took back that is down beside the lake more than the one I came in on.

I had lunch on some rocks below the campground, it was so peaceful.

It was mid week and only came across a few other people. It is a lovely place to explore.

There is no cell service in this area.

Bel arrêt piquenique, avec une vue magnifique. Facilement accessible, toilettes et espace de stationnement à proximité. Les tables sont majoritairement situé entre le stationnement et le lac, près des sapins.

Un trésor peu connu, mais un incontournable.

If you are lucky enough to obtain a site on the lake side, you will be treated to a magnificent view of the lake and mountains beyond. Because this is the year of Covid, getting a site at all is nearly impossible, as they are first come, first serve. We were forced to walk the loop to search for a site that was coming available, ask the current occupants for permission to put up a tent, then pay for the site even though we wouldn’t be able to move in until they had left – two days in the future. I understand paying to hold a site to ensure you will have a spot for the weekend, but our situation didn’t feel right as the Government is getting paid twice for the site.
Never-the-less, we enjoyed our stay immensely. Interlakes is close to Boulton Campground, which has a store, and a short drive to the Canyon Dumping Station. The sites have no power or water but are mostly staggered, so they are fairly private, and they have fire pits and picnic tables. The outhouses are the old style, and leave a lot to be desired, but the campground managers do a good job of keeping them as clean as possible and ensuring that there is always paper and hand gel.
The lake was used by people with canoes, paddle boats, kayaks, and motorboats. There were also children and dogs playing in the water. The shoreline is not sandy and is made up of large sharp rocks; not really family friendly, but not a deterrent to family gatherings. Therein lies my one complaint: people refused to pick up after their dogs, and the shore was littered with dog poop. We really couldn’t understand why anyone would want to spend any time there.
We were warned of bears in the area and were lucky enough to watch a mother grizzly and her cub wander through the campground eating the buffalo berries found there. We also came across a black bear sitting at the park entrance eating dandelions. What a thrill!
There are 48 sites at $29.00 per night, maximum stay is 16 nights. We stayed 10 nights in August 2020.

What a beautiful place to spend your day with family. We always enjoyed being outdoors with scenic attractions --- mountains, fresh air, woods, lake, trees, rocks and some friendly animals, it feels great that Upper Kananaskis offered all of these! Very relaxing and peaceful, you can actually feel being reconnected with nature.

My kids (Ages 5-11) were able to play by the lake and throw rocks. We did some hiking and explore. Picnic tables are available as first come first serve. What I like most is we had privacy and distance with other people, we also put up our tent in case it rains or to take a nap and yes it was very useful!

Toilet room is available too, just bring your own sanitizer, toilet paper, gloves, disposable seat cover, and mask!

Overall experience was great and I highly recommend it for people of all ages!

Things to do: Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, (Bring your own)
What to wear: Layers/ raincoat/ summer attire (weather changes unpredictably)
Shoes: running shoes slip resistant (lake sides are more on rocks)
Foods/ drinks: Bring your own
Parking space: adequate ~ The earlier the better

* Don't forget your camera *

Quiet trail (after you pass trail to Rawson Creek) around the whole upper lake. Amazing hike through dense forest, past the tree-line and over waterfalls. Great views over the upper lake and lots of wildlife to spot. Weather changes like crazy so make sure you wear layers and take a raincoat.

One of the best hikes in Alberta. Walking at 2 mph, it will take about 5 hours as there are many places to take fantastic pictures. Be safe and go in a group...bear country.
