Easily accessible, lots of improvements on the service roads in the park. Can be muddy during rainy season. I saw a tarmac runway, a little bit smaller, I guess can be used to land cesna type aeroplanes or helicopters.. The park has a camping site, i did not use so i cannot give a review on that. This park is quiet, little traffic. a lot of beautiful birds to watch. Big game like Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras, and extinct roan antelopes.

We planned to visit the park on September 11th. For about a month now, you have to pay for admission online.
Unfortunately, the man at the gate had no idea how to go about it.
He started googling it, but he was completely at a loss.
After 2 hours, we left the gate again without having visited the park.
It's a real shame....

A stunning, tranquil campsite with a beautiful view to take in the African sunrises and sunsets. The park was easy to get to from Homa Bay. Inside the park, the roads were variable but efforts were being made to upgrade the surfaces. Wildlife was stunning - we saw 5 rhinos together, giraffe, beautiful birds, topi and zebra, amongst others, as well as the elusive Roan Antelope. We got to enjoy this beautiful park all by ourselves, with virtually no other visitors for the 4 days and 3 nights we were there. It is also the only KWS park we have visited with a guide book, although not all the roads are accurately marked on the map. An absolute bargain on current KWS rates.

Ruma National park lies in Western Kenya, close to the shores of Africa’s largest inland Lake, Lake Victoria. The park is considered the last retreat and the sanctuary of the endangered and threatened Roan antelope which is considered one of the Africa’s rarest Antelopes. This park was established in 1966 to protect its indigenous population of rare Roan antelope which exist nowhere else in Kenya. It acquired national park status in 1993 and renamed Ruma National Park on the request of the local community in honor of one of the most powerful Kenya’s wizards, the much-feared Gor Mahia who was living high on a hill which now forms part of the Kanyamwa Escarpment. The classic image of East Africa is realized in Ruma National Park, a land of rolling Savannah dotted with picturesque Acacias and backed by dramatic hills. Compact in size, the park is easily traversed by only two major routes and offers a unique mosaic of reverie woodland, golden Savannah and magnificent Escarpments.

I’ve visited Ruma with young kids from Kisumu and they had a brilliant time. They have never been on safari before so for them it was a magical and fun day out.
I work for a tour operator in the UK and have visited pretty much all National parks in Kenya. You can’t compare Ruma with the Mara or any other parks really because the main animals you find in Ruma are Giraffe (hundreds!), zebra and antelopes (mainly Impala and Topi). We were lucky and saw four rhinos from a distance.
There are no elephants or lions but I’ve heard that there are a few leopards around (didn’t see any). Although the park is famous for antelopes we didn’t see the Roan antelope.
Important things to note: you can only pay the entry fee with Mpesa!! They do not accept cash (under no circumstance!) and the card machine usually has no network. I tried to pay by card a few times and it never was able to connect. I then had to ask a friend to transfer some money via Mpesa which took ages. So come prepared!
When it’s the rainy season be aware that normal cars can get stuck and you’ll need a good safari vehicle to do the trip.
We had to end our trip a bit early as it started raining heavily and the rangers asked our driver to leave the park as we may get stuck. The park really is useless when it rains as the path turns into mud.
Overall I think it’s a lovely park with a beautiful landscape. Don’t expect to see a big variety of animals but for the little ones it was very exciting. This trip was very special to them, travelling in a vehicle that can open the roof was an adventure alone.
It’s a good alternative if you only want to go for one day (from kisumu or Homa bay) and don’t want to go all the way to central Kenya or also if you can’t quite afford any of the big parks. Entry fees are reasonable. Citizen kids are around 200ksh, adults around 350ksh, Non-residents/citizens pay $22.
Just to give you an idea... For the vehicle, for the whole day I paid 6000 ksh in total (safari van with open roof) which was a very good deal I got through a friend. Driver-guide and petrol costs extra.
On the way back we stopped at Simbi Nyaimba. It was alright. You can walk around the lake which takes about 30 minutes and the local guides will tell you a myth about the lake.
Hope this was helpful. Enjoy :)

Inderdaad, klein park.

We had an enjoyable and relaxing day at Ruma. We live in Kisumu so we had a 2 1/2 hour drive to the park. We left in the morning and returned home in the evening so we really were not able to be in the park at the peak morning and evening sighting hours. The ranger that checked us in at the gate was very helpful. We saw the most game down toward the airstrip on the newer, lower road. We probably saw over 100 giraffes. We also saw buffalo, a variety of birds, topi, waterbuck and a few other animals. We did a self drive and the main roads in the park are passable right now with a van. (End of December) We had two families and children from toddlers to teens but it was enjoyed by all. We will be back.

There are various categories of animals in the park. Taking a taxi to the site doesn't cost much. The road to the park is good and the distance is short.

Don't expect a nicely organized safari trip... It's wild, unorganized, slippery black-cotton soil (when wet), basic, cool and just REAL...
