We were a large group and there was enough room wherever we went to accommodate us all. Our tour guide was delightful and knew her subject.

We loved this visit! The immense telescope set in the strange landscape of the area looks “otherworldly “. The surrounding vegetation is enchanting in early summer, but you need to slow down to enjoy it.
We booked for the night tour but were contacted in the afternoon because cloud cover meant the tour was cancelled. We were offered a refund or a day tour the following morning. We chose the day tour. Well worth it.
The visitors centre needs work. It is disorganised and confusing. A few directional arrows would help separate the dinosaurs from the stars, for instance, and some exhibits were not working. Our charming guide was knowledgeable.
The SALT website does not give clear directions to the observatory. Visitors need to know that it’s a 15 minute drive out of Sutherland, not to be confused with the planetarium or Sterland.
Other reviews mention the potholes in the access road but we noticed that they’ve been repaired recently.

I enjoyed a wonderful visit but with extremely mixed feelings. On the positive side, this is an absolute worldclass facility and something every South African should experience. On the negative side, the section of tarred road from Sutherland to the SAAO is full of potholes, the visitor centre is somewhat delapidated - posters hang skew, notices are missing (several spots with double sided tape), the exhibition is confusing and obviously still exactly as at its opening many years ago.
Still a facility to be proud of as a South African!

The people were very nice and highly knowledgeable tour guides. Few other places on earth would open their doors to this kind of unique experience to get under the bonnet and see how these giant telescopes really work.

Really njoyed the visit. It would be lovely if the beginning of the tour was a bit more updated. If you are in Sutherland, it is worth visiting.

Stunning and a must visit for those that enjoy learning about all things astronomy and technology. This place shows what collaboration with different countries and universities can accomplish

Lovely new and interesting information about how age of stars are determined & much more. Some of the exhibits at the reception were not functioning and some exhibits appear unprofessional.

We did a day and night tour and both were really good. We enjoyed the views the most. Thank you Patrick for both tours - a definite must do if you have the chance.

Something you have to do!!! This facility is known by all but no one really knows what is there. I never realized how many observatories were at the facility. The tour through the visitor centre was a little disjointed, until the tour guide started explaining what we were looking at. He was really knowledgeable with a wicked sense of humour. Going from the original Elizabeth scope to the magnificent Salt is just a show of awesome engineering

No answer via phone/emails to book. A restaurant owner noted 3 similar complaints that day. Pathetic!

I am traveling to Sutherland in 10 days and would like to go to SALT. But can't seem to get onto their website. What are the fees and tour times? Or is there an email address I could contact them on?

Hi TripAdvisor Travellers.. I want to visit Sutherlands (Northern Cape - SALT ) we are travelling some 1300km from Durban via the Garden route towards George/Knysna and then Outshoorn - How many days is needed to visit the telescopes. We were told that the best time to visit is before the raining seasons so will early August 2018 be okay. Are there any other attraction in Sutherlands

I would recommend Sterland, with Jurg as your guide for any stargazing in Sutherland. 2 nights minimum, as if the 1st night is overcast you still have a chance for the 2nd night. They do recommend winter as the best time to see the stars, but Sutherland is a winter rainfall area. You need a day to see SALT and the day tour is well worth it. Early August should be fine.

Hi - I need to plan a trip to Sutherland to do a tour of SALT - what is best way to get the most informative and interesting tour of this and star gazing - do we just book the SALT guides or what? Good accommodation recommendations needed. We would also like to combine this trip with the Spring Flowers in September - any advice on where best to go at this time and where to stay - any information welcomed! Thanks

It's possible to view telescopes with guided tours from Observatory.Unfortunately you will not see the stars through telescopes from here as the telescopes are collecting data. However, there are a couple of places in this small town where stargazing can be done at night from local's telescopes. Can definitely recommend Primrose Cottage B&B owned by a lovely couple David and Denise from UK. Good home comforts from a very hospitable couple. David does occasionally offer star gazing from his garden and has a wealth of knowledge. Very interesting experience!

We will be in Surherland on 10 November. What time is the evening tour? Is it rainy season in November?

I did not do the evening tour as we wanted to go into SALT and see the actual telescope. If you go in the evening there are scientists working there so visitors cannot enter SALT. I would suggest you do the afternoon tour. Weather ??? well the Karoo Highlands are historically dry and cold but you never know.

I'd like to know what weather to expect generally as we're visiting for two nights on 24 and 25 October.

The weather at this time is usually quite warm, the days will be around 28 degrees celcius and the evenings much cooler around 10 degrees. I see you are from Somerset West, the weather isn't too different except for the cooler nights. You will be fine with a light sweater and jeans, during the day you will be able to wear T shirts / shorts / dresses. Definitely take sunblock. You will really enjoy the trip. Safe travels.
Is it true that there is a trip of children of a certain place or school to Sutherland on june or july who are interested in being an astronomer
