We drove through desert to get here only to have a man at a gate tell us it was closed. Would be great to have better info online. We were interested to see it but disappointed that we wasted time trying to get there.

As per my reading online, this place is open for public all the time. After a hard 1 hour drive, and again struggling another hour to find the place, we found a big boundary fence, with unprofessional guard asking us to be far because: Entry is restricted. I told him that I saw many nice photos for many people in this place. He said: they are the workers inside, we can’t stop them taking photos.
My advice now is: Don’t visit this place. A long drive in vain.

Underwhelming but the surrounding areas are worth a look. It’s an exaggeration to call this a city. The size is more like a household compound. The custodians seem to treat it as home which means that aside from wondering through the street/s there is little else to do or see.

I was offered a seat and some tea but questionable hygiene led me to refuse. Similarly the little kiosk could do with a clean. Oddly there is a charging station for phones right in the center of the town square.

On its own it’s not worth the trip but as part of an outing to see the East/West sculptures and the Mystery Village plus the drive through the biosphere then it’s worth swinging by for a quick photo op.

Your reaction to Film City will depend a lot on what sort of tourist you are. There isn't a lot to this walled "village" created for a TV series and now housing just an onsite manager. You might spend just 5 minutes and leave largely underwhelmed. We were there close to an hour, just wandering around, climbing the turrets, soaking in the atmosphere, looking at the desert views from the top of the wall and just generally enjoying being there. Good photo ops too. Combined with a viewing and feeding of the nearby Oryx and the Richard Serra desert art installation we found it to be an enjoyable, worthwhile round trip from Doha.

We hired a car and driver to venture into the barren desert west of Doha. The area held no paved roads, just an vast area crisscrossed by tracks with no directional signs. Our goal was to see Richard Serra's "East/West West/East" sculpture in the middle of nowhere. But we also wanted to look at anything nearby that might also be of interest, such as Film City. After visiting that modern creation of an old walled Arabic village, I was relieved that this set for the TV series, "Sons of Wolves," had not been the only thing on our itinerary.

It took just a few minutes to walk along the short main and side streets, all flanked by small buildings, built to resemble mud-brick houses. The entire area covered little territory. The main gate and guard towers at the front gave a bit more character to the complex. No shops, food or information are here, but there is a public toilet. When we visited, a few men seemed to be working on maintenance. We took some photos and left.

Across the road, however, a small oasis exists with trees and an artificial pond. The water attracts ostriches and white Oryx and we watched many wander by. I think children would find these creatures to be intriguing. But during our late morning visit, no one else had come to Film City.

For those interested in visiting independently, I recommend 4-wheel drive, GPS, plentiful water, snacks, a full gas tank, a spare tire and a jack. I think off-road driving experience would help. Once we left the paved road, about a 50-minute drive from Doha, it took at least 20 minutes to reach this attraction, not including the time spent at the sculpture.

Tours are offered to the film set that include other stops, and a car and driver can be hired through hotels. We paid no admission to enter.

It’s a hidden gem in Qatar, if you know the story behind the mystery village & film city than you are going to love this place. Its almost .5 hours journey from main city which include bumpy off-roading. This place is very beautiful & incredible Try to go early to see beautiful view and beach area too. Don’t forgot to take lots of water and food if possible. As except tea and snacks you will get nothing there. Try to come back before sunset as the way to go there is not easily reachable by map.

The drive from Doha to Zekreet was just under an hour. However, the drive along the desert to film city was very bumpy and took longer than expected. I think a car would be fine as long as you stay on the main path. We took our Jeep and went off road a few times and did bottom out. We also had to go slower than expected because the shocks on our vehicle aren’t great. The desert drive although bumpy was spectacular. We went on a weekday during winter break and only passed a couple other vehicles. As you drive up to film city, there is wild Oryx and ostrich in huge confined fenced area, which was pretty neat.
Film city itself was very cool. The very friendly security fellow invited us for tea in a covered outdoor space. It was cool to explore the old town setting and climb up the stairs for a view of the desert. Roosters and cats roamed the property. Have your camera ready because there’s so many opportunities for great photos including a stop along the Zekreet desert to climb up the sandstone formations. We even drove over to an area where the desert transitioned into the sea and dipped our toes in the water. It was absolutely clear and stunning. If you like to get out and explore I would highly recommend it. Must see while in Qatar if you have the time!

I had my family over for a vacation, my wife and for daughters, and decided to take them off the normal tourist route. Where better than Zekreet, it's beach, it's fort and of course, Film City.

Yes, I drove myself but I am an accomplished off road driver. If you are not prepared, don't try it yourself; book a tour. Notwithstanding, to get into the UNESCO Biosphere Park is not easy, as there is only one open access gate, and Film City is within the park. But, once in, there is some great things to see, wild Oryx roaming and Film City, abeit small, is a great visit. When we visited a little cafe inside made a fantastic stop in the desert. It served cold drinks, sweets and crisps for the kids and more.

If you have the time in Qatar, add Film City to your list and enjoy a day off the general tourist grid.

If you are thinking of driving yourself, you will definitely need a good rugged 4x4, and a good satnav system or Google Maps. Head for the East-West, West-East art piece in the desert, and then, once there, drop a pin on google earth at Film City, highlight the coordinates, select Google Maps from the popup menu and then ask Google Maps for directions...but I say again, be prepared, take plenty of water or better still, take a tour. But most of all, enjoy; my family did and I had two teens, two little ones and my wife, and they all had a fantastic day :)
