The building itself is impressive and special as it is located at the bend in the South Saskatchewan River and you feel as though you are one with river as you walk through it. Apparently, the colour of the building (copper) was meant to match with the colour of the Delta Bessborough, which was the most important 20th Century building in the city and the Remai Modern is probably going to be the most important building in the city of the 21st Century.
Regarding the art, it is world-class. The museum owns over 400 Picasso linocuts, of which there are always a dozen or so on display. Basically, if you like Picasso the last ten years of the work produced in his career is located here. The Mendel masterpieces including the Lauren Harris “Mountains Near Jasper” look very comfortable in their new home. Newer pieces such as Dorothy Knowles “Lush Garden” are stunning and beautifully displayed.
Finally, the restaurant in the lobby, Hearth, is worth the trip itself.

Saskatoon might not be the place that first comes to mind when you think of fine art but this gallery is worth a stop. When we were there they had an exhibit of linocut prints and they had set up a demonstration studio where you can watch the artists put together a print - it is detailed and immersive work and we had a chance to ask questions and observe the activity of creation in a way that I have never experienced before.
If you don’t like modern art you will not enjoy the third floor, but go up there anyway because that’s where the Picassos are, and they are fantastic! Because they are prints you can get a really unique perspective on how he saw the world, as he was clearly experimenting with different techniques, colours, and layering effects to create different visual emphases. If you do like modern art you are guaranteed to like whatever the current exhibit is!
The second floor houses numerous works from local and Canadian artists including one of my favourites by Lawren S. Harris of the mountains.
There is a store on site.

Modern art not really my thing but was impressed with the collection of Picasso ceramics and with some legacy pieces provided (donated?) by the Mendel gallelry a former gallery in Saskatoon...including works by Emily Carr, Lawren Harris. Gallery also houses the Hearth Cafe situated on the ground floor with views out towards the South Saskatchewan river. Pleasant spot with OK food. Paid underground and street parking.

Everything about this museum is great. It's in a sharp-looking modern building set along the river walk with a nice flower bed alongside it. The lobby greets you with a spectacular work of many shiny objects dangling from the high ceiling. There is a room dedicated to Picasso linocuts and ceramics; a very pleasant staff member (name of Danica, I think) discussed them with us and walked us through a little ceramics project of our own at a workbench. Another helpful program guide, name of Jiaqi, walked us to a large special retrospective on the work of the (not well known enough) Trinidadian-Canadian painter Denyse Thomasos, which was really impressive and powerful. Another special exhibit was not yet open, but we got to see some staff figuring out how to reassemble an odd-looking modern sculpture for display, not obvious what went where :-) When we arrived on an early Wednesday morning there were few people visiting, but by the time we left it was getting busier.

Visited this gallery on a recent trip to Saskatoon. There’s no set admission fee rather you make a donation in an amount of your choosing. The exhibits were really engaging; the most powerful for me was Meryl McMaster’s Bloodline. The images captured in Ms. McMaster’s photography are powerful and haunting. Nick Cave’s Spinner Forest installation fills the atrium and is really captivating to watch. The staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommend - so glad we took the time to visit.

I heard good things about this museum since it opened and we included it in a road trip to Northern Saskatchewan.
First, it’s an elegant building located on the charming river walk area of Saskatoon. It’s a great location to walk to or around, or have lunch at their restaurant. Second, it’s an easy to use building with great gallery spaces. The lobby is large and inviting with a fireplace (not needed in summer), seating areas and the most amazing installation art by Nick Cave.
It is the art that makes it worth it. They had an indigenous artist Meryl McMaster with her large scale, spiritual reflections of her grandmothers that was a WOW show. What impressed me is that the art descriptions were in her indigenous language as well as English. There was a retrospective show of Trinidad born Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos plus a wild installation by French artist Laure Prouvost. The Remai apparently has one of the largest collection of Picasso prints and ceramics in Canada (two separate rooms).
The museum is pay what you want and they have a couple of credit card kiosk stations.
Go see it. It’s worth it!

A group of eight of us went to Pop-up Happy Hour this past week for the first time - and it will probably be our last. Less than a quarter of the deck was in shade which mean a majority of the people had to be in the sun since there was nothing to provide shade. The seating was uncomfortable to say the least. The metal chairs had no padding and the unusual curvature made them very uncomfortable to sit in. The metal benches had no backing although the two seaters had cushions and a strange shape to the backing. The metal stools were basically unused as they were rather high and had weird leg rungs for you to rest your feet on. However, the choice of beverages was sufficient and the charcuterie board was ample for the first arrivals. These comments are only about the Pop-up Happy Hour and not the gallery itself.

Too late to "improve" anything about remai modern > big waste of taxpayer $ that should never have been built > > went ONCE,, on a free day,, so much wasted space and most of the stuff in there is junk >> I would have felt "ripped off" if I would have had to pay even a loonie to get in > This place will forever be syphoning taxpayer money,, just to keep the doors open

Hi Brian, we believe one of the best things about contemporary art is that all reactions — from love to confusion to outright dislike — are valid. Our exhibitions and programs change frequently so if you didn’t connect to the art on your last visit, there’s a good chance something new will spark your imagination when you come back again.
By the way, we just announced an exciting update. Admission is now by donation every single day we are open. Any amount is welcome. We hope you'll visit again!
