This museum is small but worth a quick stop to learn about some history and to also try some old printing techniques.
Fee: There is a small fee per person which includes a tour (just one floor) but it is more interesting than walking around yourself.
Staff: Very friendly and knowledgeable. They look like students so I assume they appreciate your visit.
Time: Not a lot of time required because it is a small museum.
Other: They have a one person washroom that guests can use and they have air conditioning.
Overall: We were glad to stop here for a quick break and tour.

Tucked away in the corner of the village of Queenston is a small but very interesting museum. The purpose of the museum is two-fold: a history of William Lyon Mackenzie, who published his anti-establishment newspaper here for a short time before moving to Toronto (and getting into lots of trouble), and the history of printing press. Both are dealt with well. The history of the printing press, with vintage machines, is demonstrated up to the modern age. The tour guide gives a detailed account of how they worked, and the changes in technology that allowed going from 200 copies to 200,000 copies or more. It gives you an appreciation on how hard it was to produce something we take for granted. If you're into historical museums, this won't disappoint.

It seemed to be overpriced for the tour, because the site itself is contained to a small area. It was fairly interesting, though and they let you print a bookmark yourself by pulling the handle on an antique press.

My girlfriend and I took a tour of the Mackenzie Printery Museum as part of the Niagara Parks Access Package. It was a great tour. The three young ladies really knew their stuff and they were so nice. I recommend this tour to anyone who loves history. Bonus: I got to print my name using one of the printing machines.

This visit is about 20 minutes long, depending on how many questions the group has. You get to have an experience in making a print with your name on it and learn about the improvements of the printing business.

This museum is housed in a historic building which once actually operated as a printery. Docents take you through and explain what you're looking at, and even show you how one of the old-time presses work. Their presses span from the earliest days of printing in Canada through the modern (pre-computer) era. After the tour you can go back and spend as much time as you like looking closer, and asking questions. Incidentally, this is one of the few museums in the area that are open on Mondays.

This little museum is fantastic. We spent about an hour in here learning all about the history of printing (the history of the building is also quite interesting). Our tour guide, Evan, was very knowledgeable and made the tour interesting, fun and interactive especially for our kids (ages 9, 7 and 4). We got to create a line of text and print it using one of the larger printing presses and also made bookmarks using a more advanced type of printing press. For a small place, they have done a great job of displaying a lot of information and original printing equipment.
They have for sale some printed sayings and I bought a pretty pewter ornament. They could do a little better and maybe even sell more gift shop items if they were easier to access (it was hard to see some of the items as they were low to the ground); I know space is limited though. All in all - a great place to visit!

Yes, you'll learn how this phrase came into being as well as terms like upper case and lower case...and many more.
This little gem is worth a visit for interesting tidbits of information and printing history. For anyone who has contact with printers, you'll find it particularly enjoyable.
The guides are informative and entertaining.

In the hamlet of Queenston, the Mackenzie Printery is housed in a century-old rebuilt home once owned by newspapers publisher William Lyon Mackenzie, who lead a rebellion to bring responsible government to Canada.
We were given a very interesting tour, learning about the Mackenzie house and his involvement in printing, as well as the history of printing in Canada. Our guide explained the many different printing presses on display, including the oldest operating wooden press in Canada (late 1700s). Visitors can help operate a newer cast iron model from the mid 1800s and take home a printed souvenir. You’ll also learn interesting bits of trivia such as where the terms “upper and lower case” came from. Well worth the visit.
