what a wonderful system

The GVPL has responded well to the realities of COVID19. I enjoy being able to have material placed on hold so my in/out is swift and efficient. The many branches fanning out throughout our wider community offer unique and friendly experiences. Hopefully soon we can return to on-site computer availability and broader browsing options.

While it may not be as flashy as the Vancouver Public Library (Central Branch) or the Halifax Central Library, the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) still has everything a bibliophile could want. Between the central branch and its various outposts, the GVPL has a fine and fair collection of books, e-books, CDs, videos, video games, periodicals, maps and resources full of local, regional and national history. One neat feature of the GVPL is the ability to obtain “fast views” or “fast reads” – new book or movie releases that you can take out for a day or two and enjoy before returning them.

I recently had an opportunity to attend the GVPL’s central branch, which is located in the heart of downtown Victoria on bustling Broughton Street, home to many nice snack treats. From an architectural standpoint, the central branch is rather plain Jane, but that’s okay because the focus is on the library’s holdings. The GVPL – central branch – is a multi-level emporium of books and other resources. Whether you’re looking for a good read, reference material, music, or just a quiet place to study, it can be done here. The layout is practical and functional: Lots of open space and ample seating.

Because it lacks the flair of more contemporary libraries, I’m not sure why one would visit the GVPL as an “attraction” per se; however, if you’re a local and/or a member (maybe even a “friend of the library”), it’s a nice place to come, relax and contemplate the good. After all, libraries are spaces in which we can discover new ideas; expand our minds and creative side; and build a sense of community and togetherness. The GVPL succeeds in that respect.

A word of caution: If the material you are borrowing is “restricted,” just be aware that you’ll have to visit the circulation desk to collect it ;)

Oh! And if one of the GVPL’s branches doesn’t have what you’re looking for, don’t worry! The book truck will get it to you in short order!

Needed Help w Ipad

What a friendly and helpful staff.
I could not get my IPad app Cloudlibrary to work but the librarian was able to update my card and get me going.

ヴィクトリアに図書館があることは聞いていましたが、今回、こんなに便利な場所に広い図書館があることを知り、利用価値の大きさに驚きました。特に、キッズ向けのコーナーは、本の種類も豊富かつパソコンやソファやテーブルも充実し、遊びのスペースも。小さなお子さん連れの方から、英語学習中の方の上達にも役立つと思われる、とても良い図書館です。

大きい図書館

ダウンタウンにある大きな図書館で、入館は誰でもできます。館内のパソコンやプリンターの使用、レンタルには図書館の利用カードが必要なようでした。
中には広めのテーブルもあれば勉強机もあり、ゆったりと時間を過ごすことも、集中して勉強することもできます。
無料wifiも設備されているようでした(私はセキュリティの問題？で上手く接続できませんでした)。
日本の雑誌も少しですが置いてありました。

ダウンタウンにある便利なかなり広い図書館でした

便利な場所にありました。ブロートンストリートにブルーの図書館の表示板が立っていました。1階は通り抜けられるような造りになっていてコートニーストリートに抜けられたと思います。

ダウンタウンにある図書館です。幼児向けの読み聞かせがあると聞いて訪問しました。
子供向けのコーナーはとても充実していて、日本語や中国語の絵本もありました。
観光で幼児が持て余し気味になったときなどに立寄ると良い気分転換になると思います。

This is a great library which is nicley located in the downtown area, easy to find, limited paid vehicle parking. Take sometime to enjoy this facility!
