I have been rocking metal art under the mentorship of Alex Van Doren for the 8th time! I have definitely bettered my metal working skills under his watchful eye and grown so much as an artist since my first experience. This is something you can experience just once or again and again. Alex is also fun and very knowledgeable about metal working and ar: the perfect combination for a couple of fun days and whatever you make in the workshop you get to take home with you. Lunch is included on both days and if you are lucky, the house pup Drago will pop in to sniff you and maybe you'll also be able to meet other members of the Van Doren family who are amazing and interesting. It is a fun, creative, social experience that is definitely worth taking!
I fully recommend this experience and hope to be back in the studio soon!

I had a great time learning and making metal art for the first time. Alex is a high energy teacher and team builder, and Papa Lane adds a great positive mentor, motivator and wise man vibe to the build experience. Good lunches and pup/shop mascot too.

What an amazing experience! I learned so much in only 2 days. Alex made the workshop easy and fun! The workshop is incredible! Incredible to go in knowing nothing and leave with a table made with my own two hands for my entryway. Van Doren Metal Art - you guys rock!!

This workshop is so much fun!!! You are inspired and encouraged to be as creative as you want to be. I had never done anything like this before. If you're a newbie, dont worry..they explain and help every step of the way!!! Highly recommend and honestly can't wait to go back and do it again!!!

I was able to come and create my idea in a day, with Alex there to help me whenever needed. Felt safe & taken care of. Good lunch. Easy parking. Good safe neighborhood. Bring hearing protectors if you have sensitive / good hearing. The machines and noise can be loud. Also good to wear work clothes & long sleeves.

Spent two days having a blast with Alex in his metalworking workshop! I had seen several friends of mine on Facebook posting their metalwork “action” shots and knew I needed to do it. I have a lot of background working with wood and construction, but never learned how to work with metal. The first part was learning all the tools - the plasma cutter, welding and more! Then we were all off to concept and create our own projects. I had something in mind already and Alex coached me all along the way. When my wife asked me how it was, I told her it was amazing and that I had so much fun. Looking forward to doing it again and building more cool stuff. I might even get my own welding machine!

My husband Ron and myself took a metal art workshop together at Van Doren on a recent trip to San Miguel. We were welcomed with coffee and pastries. Alex started the workshop with an orientation to all of the equipment, and we took turns using each piece so we understood it's function. After the hands on instruction, we took a break for a beautiful lunch outside, where we enjoyed sandwiches and a glass of wine. Then it was time for us to jump into designing a piece on paper, then gathering pieces of metal to make the design come to life. Alex helped us construct our piece and then we wrapped up painting it. We had an awesome time at this workshop and will definitely do the expanded 2 day workshop when we return to SMA. *Hint - working with metal can be dirty, so dress accordingly.

I received the participation in the workshop as a gift and had a great time at the Van Doren metal art workshop. Alex greeted us warmly and it was immediately a great atmosphere in the group. I felt very comfortable in the workshop and in the house of Alex. We got to know all the techinken and equipment for metalworking, were able to try everything out and already started working on our own object. On the second day I finished it and was well supported. I had a great time, there was delicious food and a very warm and competent company by Alex and his family! Thank you!!

One of the BEST things I’ve done in San Miguel! Alex is a great teacher and you will surprise yourself with your untapped creativity. Van Doren Metal Art Workshop is a place you can go with friends or solo, and a fun place to meet new people. A lovely lunch and pastries are served too! I’m hooked.

Alex and Lane offered a one day course and it was incredible. They were both informative in regards to the machines and processes as well as inspirational and helpful when it came to getting the idea in my head translated to bent, ground and welded metal.I would highly recommend their workshops to both visitor and locals alike. Oh an I agree with Casey, lunch was fabulous. Thanks again.
