We booked this as an excursion from Royal Caribbean. After being met at the pier by someone from the ranch, we took a 30 minute bus ride to arrive at Rancho Buenavista. The grounds are lovely and wild. The dogs that live on the property are friendly.
Carlos was our guide and riding instructor. He did a fine job of going through the basics of riding, although the horses are so used to the trail, there was really little that the rider needs to do to guide them. Helmets are provided to those who want them. The ride itself is a loop around the ranch with a few stops to view artifacts that had been found on the grounds.
After the ride and a drink at the ranch, we boarded a bus to a beautiful nearby beach where we could relax and take in the beautiful view.
I have only two things to note that take the rating down from five stars. First, had we known that the beach visit would be to a place we couldn’t swim, we wouldn’t have worn our bathing suits. It wouldn’t have made a difference in booking the tour, but we would have dressed more appropriately.
Secondly, several reviews noted that the horses are well cared for. I don’t know about their treatment in between tours, but several of the horses on our tour were brought to us directly from other riders without an opportunity to rest or get a drink of water. They were immediately given to other riders after us, as well. Several of the horses in our group were hungry and kept trying to eat during stops, which made them somewhat difficult to control. There was one horse in our group that bit another, causing that rider to almost be thrown, and tried to bite one other. Carlos commented that he knew that horse’s behavior and that the rider should hit him with a stick when he acted out. The rider of the biting horse was experienced and could handle him, but it was intimidating to other riders especially as we were told to keep our horses away from him.
Otherwise, we all enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to others who are looking for something to do in Cozumel.

I have very little experience riding horses. The staff did a great job providing the basic education and teaching how not to kill yourself and still pretend to look halfway decent on the horse.
The guide was incredibly engaging and very caring to ensure that everyone had a good experience.
I think we as customers need to use common sense and people where shocked to hear that you had to wear a helmet or use bug spray. Also, just because you grew up on a horse farm 50 years ago does not mean you know anything relevant now. I used to ride a bike and run ten miles too. Eye Roll.
Overall the trail and terrain was fun and the trails are cool to see.

Rancho Buenavista is a beautiful horse ranch located on south central Isla Cozumel.
They have 70+ fantastic, very well cared for horses of various breeds including some
wonderful Quarter crosses and take very careful consideration matching horse to rider.
The trails leading into the jungle are mostly ancient and riders see Mayan ruins, cenotes, and indigenous fauna. Very educational and great for beginners and experienced riders alike. Jen and I had a wonderful time on Tinkerbell and Candela!!
Thanks Julio, see you hopefully sooner than later, John

This place was a good Excursion from Carnival cruise. it was a nice long drive so we were able to see lots of the island. The horse back riding itself was ok. It was so hot that the animals really did not want any part of this. The ride through the jungle was nice, but really there was not much to see aside from few historic items, other items were replicas planted randomly within the bush. Definitely wear long pants.
The bus takes you to an overpriced restaurant and beach afterwards so dont waste you money and wait until you get back to port to eat and drink. The highlight was really seeing the back streets of the town away from the port. very poor and eye opening.

I’ve never ridden a horse before, but after a short instruction from our guide I was ready. The trail was mostly shaded and the horse was very cooperative. We did a group tour and the horses did a great job of staying together. All of the horses (and dogs!) looked well taken care of and all of the guides were very helpful.

This ride was without a doubt the highlight of our entire vacation in Mexico. The Buena Vista Ranch is awesome. The horses were beautifully cared for and easy to ride. Tony B. was our guide and he was amazing. He is part Mayan and his knowledge of the culture was wonderful. He told so many terrific stories of the people as we rode through the ruins. Gave it all such meaning. One of the best excursions and tour guides I've ever experienced!!

Tony was our guide on this tour. He was fantastic and provided a short horse back riding lesson prior to our ride in the jungle. The horses are wonderful and take instruction well as long as their human knows what they’re doing. I had a wonderful time! The only thing I highly recommend to protect the horse is that the ranch place a weight restriction on riders. There was a very obese person in my group and I felt very badly for the horse that this person was on the horse clearly was off balance and protested but carried on. Please place a human weight restriction on your riders BuenaVista! I beg you. The horses should have an enjoyable experience too and not have to withstand a super fat rider! That’s just cruel.

I scrolled through the other reviews looking to see if there was a theme, and the comments very much echoed my thoughts. The ride from the pier was, for us, on what appeared to be an old school bus. Emphasis on old. But it ran well and did the job. Our guides were Carlos and Tony and with 30 people in our group of riders, we were split into two groups, but families were kept together. Our family of six ranged from zero experience on a horse (my niece) to extensive riding including jumping (my kids). I was in the middle - ridden enough to know what to expect and have a basic understanding of control, but hardly an expert. The guides sorted us out per ability and assigned us to a horse that matched our comfort level. A quick safety and instruction lesson, and away we went.
The description of the ride is accurate - you go through the woods and see a handful of ancient artifacts or reconstructed ones. The history lesson with a brief overview of how the Mayans lived was interesting. There was a free bottle of water or a soda when we got back to the meeting area. Then, onto the bus for a stop at the beach.
We had all changed into our swimwear at the ranch, but the beach is not really a place to swim. It’s rocky with good sized waves and an undertow. It is, however, very pretty and a good place for pictures. The bar has minimal food offerings and no running water. My oldest enjoyed a coco loco while my wife and I had a soda. They were out of a couple of food items, but remember, it’s Mexico and life is more laid back there. We were on vacation, so we just smiled and relaxed. There was plenty of food on the cruise ship!
We knew tipping, while not obligatory, is expected. We never felt pressured to tip, and we felt our gratuity was appreciated. All in all, if you like horseback riding, are looking for a relaxing ride through a lovely area, and enjoy some humor mixed in, the excursion was worth the cost.

We had a great time on the horse back ride. When it was time to leave he made it a point that both his both his shirt pockets needed to be filled because that was how they were paid...even though the tour cost $96 USD per person. We tipped him and he was disappointed and he shook his head and he would have nothing to do with us the rest of the time. He sat on the stage and counted his tips in front of everyone. We gave him $20 USD and he was an ingrate.Unfortunately we had a good time with the tour he had to ruin it for everyone on the tour because his feelings were hurt. I would not recommend this tour because of him. He has been there over 14 years and has no plans to leave. We will tell Royal Caribbean of our experience...very poor.

Bonjour,
Comment peut-on réserver une balade? Où se trouve le ranch par rapport au centre-ville de l’île?
Merci

I read somewhere that there was a minimum weight of 80lbs. Is that right?

Hi, we went on this tour, I don't think there will be a min weight, more likely a max.
