A must-see (Dec - March). Once at the top, you are surrounded by millions of butterflies in a tranquil setting. There is no talking so you only hear the sound of birds and are surrounded by fluttering butterflies and sunshine peeking through the foliage. Everyone in our group said it was a spiritual experience.

There are a few entry options - we chose La Rosario. It costs about $6 to get in, and you automatically get a tour guide (aka a person who makes sure you respect the surroundings). Many of them do not speak English - but if you come prepared to try to converse and try out your Spanish, you will find everyone is friendly.

It is about a 30 min (steepish) hike uphill. Most of it is "built-in" natural steps. I am of average fitness -- walk/run a couple of miles 3-4 times a week - and did not find it difficult. If you have health issues, you can rent a horse for about $10, which will get you about 3/4 of the way there. Both are great experiences!

There are several options to get there. Many people make it a multi-day experience by staying in a nearby town. But we only had a few days in Mexico City so decided to go there and back in the same day - which is totally doable. You just need to leave by around 7am to get back before dark.

The most common way to get there is to book a tour and pay $200-250 per person.

Some people drive - but I would not recommend it as there are many turns and unlabeled roads.

We chose to hire a private driver through Travel4Life.com and it cost $500/$10,000 pesos (but split between 4 people was only $133 each with tip). This covers all tolls and gas. Our driver, Alejandro, also packed some water for us. It was hard for us to find info on tipping - everything we saw was 10-20 pesos for drivers, but since Alejandro spent the 8+ hour journey with us, we decided 10% was fair.

Highly recommend Travel4Life. They are easy to communicate with, punctual, professional, friendly, and responsive. And we absolutely LOVED our driver, Alejandro.

A great day trip from Mexico City! About a two hour ride from the city, but well worth the investment in time. It was a bit cool in the morning when we got there so as others have noted the butterflies tend to be less active when it is cooler. Recommend arriving around 1100 or 1200 hrs to allow it to warm up for the butterflies to be more active. Also, I was advised that it is a harsh trek up the mountain side so take the tethered horses ride up option (additional cost). That said, even if you ride the horses you will still have to get off the horse and climb some 15 minutes to get to the butterflies. I do recommend the horses option as it was a fun ride and I saved some energy for the rest of the day. I hope to get a chance to go back and see this wonderful site again.

So many butterflies you can HEAR them fluttering! Imagine a full-grown tree, with limbs so heavy with buterflies that they touch the ground! NOTE - The reserve is at 11,000 ft in elevation. Strongly recommend you get from the parking lot to butterflies via horseback unless you are in amazing shape. Cheap to rent and someone leads the horse the whole way.

The butterflies migrate in this forest 4 hours from San Miguel de Allende. It's a long trip, and can be done in one day, but I recommend staying overnight to break up the drive. We had a fantastic tour with Pablo Carrasco from Permacultours Mercado SANO. He arranged everything easily and was a delightful guide. The butterfly experience was awesome, and just as enjoyable was our 1 night stay at Aqua Blanca Canyon Resort. Mineral springs, hiking trails, waterfall, and gorgeous plants. Beautifully maintained and great rooms. We departed SMA Friday morning and returned Saturday 6:00p.m.

I'm a huge fan of the monarch. When I heard that you could go see them in Mexico I jumped at the chance (see J&M Butterfly B&B). And I'm thrilled that I went - this is the best place (IMHO) of the reserves. But it's not easy. It's just a short walk from the B&B but a LONG, rough trek up a very steep hill. Yes, you can ride a horse - and I was grateful to do so. But I'm not used to riding a horse and of course that makes it harder. You get off the horse at a lovely meadow which is itself full of butterflies. Then you climb - no horse - again up a steep slope. If you have any problems with the altitude (this is at 10,000 feet) be advised to do all the stuff you're supposed to do. This takes effort to get to. The way back down is also by horse (after the meadow) and again, a rough ride down very steep slopes. The butterflies themselves are out of this world. Beyond words or explanations. I suppose all truly wonderful things take a bit of effort, eh?

It was not easy to find and I would recommend hiring a tour guide. it took us awhile to figure out where to go so we were running out of time when we arrived. We decided to take horses up and walk down which was a wise decision since it was after 3 when we got there. Even though it was a cloudy day, the monarchs in the trees were mesmerizing. They were sleeping and hanging in huge bunches. We intend to go back one day and make sure it's sunny. The walk down was lovely, along a well paved path. It was lined with red lobelia and there were hummingbirds everywhere. We loved it.

Absolutely magical. We stayed in Angangueo for 2 nights. It was cold and cloudy our first day so the butterflies were clinging to the trees, but on our second day it was gloriously sunny and breezy and the perfect day to experience the magic. My greatest recommendation would be to plan to spend a few days in the area to make sure you get at least one sunny day. Otherwise, you may leave very, very disappointed.

It was absolutely magically experience. I used Aztec Explorer tour company, walked up the Sanctuary by foot. Because of the altitude, you might get winded, that’s what happened to us, but it gives me excuse to have more time to enjoy the millions of butterflies! I felt so lucky that the owners of the company- Peter and Lydia were our guides for the day. They were incredibly knowledgeable about the sanctuary and butterflies. I can’t wait to come back to this place.

Let's all learn about these marvelous Monarchs. A trip to Mexico City, then out to one of the biospheres, is one of the best things that I've ever done. Let's get more milkweed in the US, please, and less spreading development. This is just a stunning trip...and i LOVED Mexico city. The street markets, the Sunday closing of the main city road "for the families," the Luche Libre and so on. The people are incredible.
