My husband and I took a tour of Hassel Island with William and Liz, and would highly recommend it to history buffs or anyone looking for a non-beach activity. They are genuinely awesome people, with a true appreciation for St. Thomas, and a passion for history.

I feel like I learned about everything from WWII to pirates to rum, all while surrounded by beautiful historical ruins. The hike to the top of the island was rough in the summer heat, but the views at the end were totally worth it.

As a side note, the tour is run by the historical trust (a 501C3) so the money you pay for the tour is going directly to help preserve the history of the island. There is also a cute little museum with many artifacts and paintings to check out before or after your tour.

Our guides Will & Liz (husband and wife) were fantastic. They were both full of interesting information and are obviously passionate about the history of St. Thomas and the Caribbean more generally. But just hearing all those facts and stories in a classroom wouldn't have been nearly as absorbing and fun as being there where it all happened. The boat ride and invigorating hike to the lookout tower made it a complete experience. It's also nice to know that the fee helps support the Historical Trust and all the good work they are doing. Highly recommended!

The tour guide was on vacation but we were able to contact captain kevin and he gave us a boat tour and dropped us off with lots of local knowledge. So much fun history on Hassell Island.

This tour is a must for visitors and locals. I had an incredible Saturday morning joining Doc and 5 of my friends for a memorable adventure. Doc made the history of Hassel Island come alive as we visited the historical trust sites. It was entertaining, enlightening, beautiful, and one of the best ways to start your weekend. St. Thomas is fortunate to have a historical trust that is actively taking care of these sites so that the stories can be shared with all during these tours. I highly recommend this tour for all ages.

If you are interested in the history of the Virgin Islands, this tour is a must, and Doc is probably one of the most interesting guides around. He is a wealth of information, and tells the tales of pirates, privateers, all the different countries that vied for the Virgin Islands, and how extremely important the incredible harbor of Charlotte Amalie is. There is a fun boat ride through the harbor, a hike up 275' to the top with incredible vistas, and everything you want to know and more about the past and present. He brings these islands to life. The Virgin Islands are so much more than just beautiful beaches and stunning scenery. They played a huge part in our world, and you can learn about it in a super fun way on this tour. I would give it way more than 5 stars if Doc is your guide.

We had a fantastic 2.5 hrs tour by the St Thomas Historical Society. Our guide, Doc, lead us around the southern end of the island. We met at the waterfront and were taken over to the island by boat. We were given a tour from the water of the northern side of the island. “Doc” was incredibly knowledgeable about the history of this amazing undiscovered island. We hope the NPS puts more resources into making it more accessible to enjoy. Such a piece of history. Thanks Doc and St Thomas Historical Society.
Well worth the time and cost.

The St. Thomas Historical Trust is giving tours of the island again and it's worth the $75 for the deeply researched, hilariously told history you'll get from the guide who goes by 'Doc.' It would be a nice outing to kayak over for the hiking and exhilarating views, but the island is full of evocative ruins mostly from the British occupation that you'd never be able to appreciate otherwise. The outing is about 2.5 hours starting on the downtown waterfront where the boat picks you up roughly opposite the Local Color store or Banco Popular. More good news: The National Park Service which oversees the island is reopening it so look for more trails to be cleared and possibly other tours.

Hassel Island sits in the Charlotte Amalie harbor, just east of Water Island. It is part of the Virgin Islands National Park and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. it appears that all tours to the island have been canceled due to damage resulting from the 2017 hurricanes. If you can find a way over, there are ruins of a British military garrison and marine railway/dry dock used for ship repairs. Several organizations are working to restore and preserve the island's historic sites. We settled for a photo from the Charlotte Amalie Overlook.

While we wish the trails had been re-cleared since the Irma & Maria storms, we did venture there on our own,
Seaglass and small artifacts found with local family resident. If they can bring this area back to life, it would
be a great day of adventure.

While official tours to the island are temporarily halted, you can get over to the island by making arrangements with a dive shop or through a kayak rental company. It is well worth the trouble if you enjoy history, as the island has plenty! From Danish batteries that became British forts that became American signaling stations, old German (Hamburg America Lines) coaling stations, old Royal Mail Steam Packet Company wharfs, to the best preserved marine railway in the Western Hemisphere, the history is everywhere. If kayaking, I recommend staying to the protected waters on the northern end of the island, as the waters around the southern portion are quite choppy. I also recommend going as early as possible to avoid harbor marine (to include seaplane) traffic.
