OK never mind the rating, we didn't see the beach. Let me explain. We saw amazing pictures of a deserted beach. Drove Marigot Bay to Des Barras. Google says 46 minutes driving crazy fast on super narrow roads with oncoming traffic, children, dogs, pedestrians, and so on. From Des Barras Google takes you up west and north towards Marquis. This is wrong, said a local tour guide on another road with a "Turtle" sign. He said the road we were on, from Des Barras somewhat east and north, was the only road to the beach. You can barely see it in Google satellite. Not a road, rocky ruts, downhill steeply enough to constantly ride the brakes. Small Toyota 4WD SUV not enough. BIG tires would be needed: ran into boulders about 1/3 meter in size and turned around, since despite very careful and slower-than-walking driving we had already banged the oil pan once. I'm not afraid of rough driving and like to 4-wheel in Utah and California and so on, but I have no taste for getting stranded in the middle of nowhere.
- If you try this, take water, take food, leave early.
- Or park in Des Barras and hike down...2.8km shady, rocky, not an exciting hike but not bad. 129m gain on the way back up, fairly steep.

P.S. Is Grande Anse really still nice? We wonder. Cas-En-Bas beach was FULL of seagrass in the water and on shore. Speaking to a woman running Kitesurfing St Lucia and a couple who were gathering seagrass, this has become a huge problem in the last 5 years "for all east side beaches"

You have to to go to Bayside at dinner and see Amanda. She is the best! Very accommodating and funny. She alone would be worth the trip to Sandals. The food and environment are amazing and we will definitely be back soon!

Amanda is much more than a server she should be running the place!

Grand Anse Beach is a beautiful natural sandy beach on the east coast of St Lucia. It's calm location with possibly no other people. Amazing spot, but hard to get there though. You need to grab a bus from Castries to Chassin and walk the rest of the distance. However, there is a chance to ask the mini bus driver to drive you to the last village of Desbarra for an extra charge. For two of us it was 60ESD. And then you have 2 more miles of hike down to the beach. The road is wide enough for 4x4 wheeler but it gets wet and muddy once you get down the hill. However, it is possible to drive there. There is a shelter to save yourself from the rain, but its just a shelter. Other than that its a wonderful place for wild camping! Take plenty of water!

It is a slow and tricky 4 wheel drive only road down, fording a river or estuary and the scenery is fantastic. The drive was for the adventurous, and I think it may be tricky to find without someone to follow as road signage is a rarity outside of the main roads.
Once at the beach it is wild; windy, crazy beach (many people of drowned on this beach, and you shouldn't swim here). There are two huts, in poor condition, which are doorless but provide shelter should a shower come through and you can hide out of the wind and make an old fashioned bbq/bomfire.
There are no toilet facilities here, and what you take in you carry out.
Unfortunately it seems some do not abide by this philosophy, and there was quite a lot of rubbish around the huts, and some on the beach.
We had a fantastic time of fishing in the mangrove estuary that was cut off by the tide (though unlucky) and the kids tried to catch crabs. Old fashioned good fun, off the beaten track.
Not for the faint hearted, but a different side to St Lucia which is a stark contrast to the white sand, touristy beaches of the other coast.
