We drove by the ruined cathedral during the November rioting in Port-au-Prince, so our choices on what to see were very limited. Our tour guide and driver drove by Notre Dame, but felt it unsafe to stop for too long. Windows were tightly shut and doors locked. There was a heavy military presence and tires burning in the streets. Granted, this was during an unfortunate upheaval, which accounts for the alarming security, however even during the best of times, our guide would not have gotten out and walked around the building due to unsavory characters and muggings. We have been to nearly 40 countries, feeling free to walk and explore on our own, even some of the most impoverished places, but not Port-au-Prince. Very unfortunate, but it's not worth the risk. Definitely don't try it on your own!

If you are white you will be robbed or worse. If you have to go in a group with at least 1 armed bodyguard. Full of dossiers just waiting to rob visitors.

I've visited a few times just driving by in Port. When friends from the US came to visit, I decided to hire a driver I know and do some more of the touristy things in Port (I'm American but have lived here for 6 years almost). The driver was able to get me inside the gates around the ruins - where my friends and I were able to walk around up close and really get a true sense of the enormity of the event. While we couldn't enter (entrances are boarded up), the ruins are a sobering reminder of what happened here in 2010, and the effects that event continue to have.

The best Thing to do in PauPr. is: go with a Motortaxi around. There is - what a pity - not much to see. Even not the sea u can visit. All closed. The cathethral: U can just see it from one site. All to go want thru is closed

Devant cette immense cathédrale qui n’a pas résisté au tremblement de terre , on se sent très petit .
On peut voir les arches de l’extérieur....elle devait être magnifique!
J'espère qu’on pourra entrer bientôt dedans comme à Antigua ....
Si vous êtes à Port au Prince ....faites le détour ....

Drove by the building and around the back side. Probably not a good place to visit if you do not have some natives with you. Probably not safe to get out of car and walk around.

You have to see the damage done to this beautiful building. Completely destroyed. Seremons are being held outdoors near by.

J'y suis passe mais effectivement pour ne pas y voir grand chose hormis le souvenir d'une catastrophe. Quelques mendiants se trouvent autour de ce lieu de pèlerinage. On y reste 5-10 minutes pour le recueillement.

Sad that the church not yet has been rebuilt. Be careful walking in this area. Safest to stay in car.
