The Synagogue Historic District consists of the synagogue, the museum, a mikvah, and the Jewish cemetery.
Nidhe Israel Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. Originally built in 1654, it was later destroyed by a hurricane and rebuilt in 1833. There is also a museum. On the gate to the museum building is one of my favourite quotes. In the floor of the museum are artefacts discovered during the restoration of the Jewish cemetery. Exhibits tell the story of the synagogue and the Jewish community of Barbados.
In front of the Synagogue is a Mikvah (ritual bath). Although it was built ca. 1654, it became disused in the 19th century and was forgotten until it was rediscovered in 2008. The modern covering was built in 2009.

Wonderful experience. Museum was very well done. Hard to believe some of the graves were several hundred years old. Oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere!

This is one of the most beautiful and memorable places I have ever visited. Regardless of your religious or spiritual beliefs, this is the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere with an incredible history.
I have taken self-guided tours countless times with visitors and locals alike, which are loved by everybody. But when I finally scheduled a special tour for a Saturday for special guests who were visiting Barbados for the first time (a quick stopover on a cruise) we learned more about the Jews in Barbados than we could’ve ever imagined. This was all thanks to Neal and his incredible knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching others.
If you want to have this unique experience, be sure to schedule this in advance with Neal, or you could also do a self guided tour which includes the on-site museum.
Either way, you will you will learn things you would’ve never imagined as part of Jewish, Barbados and Caribbean history.

If you want to take a break from snorkeling, swimming with sea turtles, and all the wonderful ocean activities that Barbados offers, I highly recommend checking out this fascinating and beautifully restored synagogue in Bridgetown. It is part of a UNESCO world heritage site and for good reason - the synagogue dates back to the 17th century and contains tombstones and artifacts from that time period. My wife and 10-year-old daughter and I really loved our time here, and it added a cultural and historical element to our vacation.

This is a simple, but very informative tour. In fact, of all the tours we experienced while visiting the Caribbean, this is the one that stands out in my mind as the most interesting. I highly recommend this tour.

The Jewish population of Barbados dates back to the mid 17th Century. They arrived from Dutch Brazil bringing with them windmill technology and sugar cane. In the early 20th Century, the population was down to one person. During the lead up to WWII and the Holocaust, the population expanded with Jewish refugees. In the late 1900s and early 2000s, the Synagogue was restored. If you like history, a must see.

Neal gave a thoroughly engaging and fascinating introduction to the history of Barbados, the Jewish presence there, and its importance to the island. A very interesting and well-done little museum adjacent to the synagogue is included with your entry fee. Highly recommend.

Such a unique historical site! The restored synagogue, cemetery, mikvah, and museum are full of fascinating and beautiful details, and the tour was full of interesting facts and history. The museum is very modern and well presented. For such a little-known part of Barbados's history, I highly recommend Neal's tour.

DO you need to make advance reservations to go to the museum and synagogue during weekdays or can you just come?

The sign on the synagogue door specifies Friday nights at 7:30 only. The gentleman at the museum confirmed this, as well.

What is the dress code for Friday night services? Thx

Unfortunately, I only visited during the day and - as such, and not being Jewish - it would be best to contact the Synagogue directly.
At the same time check both the timings and location as there is a new Synagogue.
