Signs to explaining along the way. Short and easy. Bubbling springs, enjoying walk. Drive from entrance, stop at lookouts

Our first morning at Rainier, the top of the mountain was cloaked in fog, so we spent our time at the base hiking the forest trails in the Longmire area. I was really impressed by the forest here and at nearby Twin Firs Loop.
The Trail of Shadows is a 0.7 mile loop hike through an old growth forest around a mountain meadow in the Longmire area of the park. I really enjoyed the forest here as it is tall and beautiful with good spacing. While the meadow is nice and we did find a deer here, I really enjoyed the forest, just so beautiful and mature. It is likely we would have skipped this if the weather had been better at the top. However, so glad we took the time to see this variety at Rainer.

This interesting trail through the woods is not long or difficult, but is quite pleasant under the shade of the trees. There are many signs along the trail about the area's nature as well as the settlers who established mineral springs tourism here using the natural springs. The stone springs themselves remain as well as a cabin built by the first 19th Century settlers.

Trail of the Shadows is a beautiful, short trail around Longmire area.
Across the street from the Longmire gift shop, you will find a trail that takes you through the tall trees, marsh field and mineral springs. Morning is the best time to see wonderful light that pierces through the tall trees.

Park in the National Inn and Longmire Historic Sight area. Historical buildings with info boards along the way. Walk around & look/read everything. Continue across the street to the easy path. Longmire history continues there. Go right as the Arrow suggest, it’s easiest. Very serene and beautiful area. Information posted as you walk along this path. I believe it was .07 of a mile RT.

So most people want to go to the Hoh Rainforest and for good reason. But if you are strapped for time and don't want to wait in long lines at the Hoh Rainforest stop here and go for a little walk. This is basically the northern part of the rainforest and with the exception of the elk, you see basically the same landscape of ferns, trees, mosses. Obviously not as grand as Hoh but still a nice place to go with fewer people

Most enjoyable walk after we left the Paradise Visitor Centre. The trails there were too slippery with the melting ice and we were not equipped for snow. The Rampart Ridge Trail was perfect for us as it took us about 2 hours climbing up. The view was worth it. On the way we met friendly fellow hikers. Lots of shade under the tall magnificent trees. We saw deers, squirrels and birds.

This is a short little trail that might be an okay walk to do if you are in the area and haven't yet driven up to Paradise. It would be good for families with little children.

Great for beginners, kids and family with no elevation gain, 0.7 Miles, 30 minutes round trip. Across the road from the Longmire museum and national Park inn, this easy loop trail circles mineral springs, a beaver pond, a historic cabin and massive Douglas-fir and western red cedar trees.
After the walk, visit Longmire Museum and/or have lunch at the National park Inn.
If you stay at the historic National Park Inn, you can take various other trails leading to waterfalls and lakes.
Reservation can be hard to get and book early!

We hiked on this neat easy and short hike. It was full of boards with interesting informations. The trail is circled around some sulfur springs. You can find some wild flowers along the trail as well.
