Cool Rock Formations to See

One of the first things you will see on your drive into and last thing out of Canyonlands National Park is the Monitor and Merriamac Rocks, and really one of the first formations you see approaching Moab from the I-70. Much of this land really first viewed and settled in the aftermath of the Civil War so these formations really looked like the modern ironclads in stone floating on the sandy sea. One is very small for the Monitor of the Union and the other is twice the size like the Merriamac (Virginia) of the Confederacy. There are multiple spots from which you can view the formations. There are simply cool to see these twin buttes rising from the flat land.

Nice roadside stop

I rated this average in the context of all the other buttes in the area. There are so many great geological wonders. These two just happen to look a little like the Monitor and Merrimac(k). It's a great excuse to stop and take a picture.

road side trail

It's a beautiful view here at sunrise or sunset. Otherwise it's just a road side stop to see the Monitor and Merrimack buttes. They are beautiful and easily worth the quick roadside stop.

Short hike. Amazing feature

We had only a short time in Canyonlands. This view area is the first one on the drive to other hikes in the park. And one not to be missed.

It is a short walk to see them.

Great parking spot for hiking and viewing with restroom facility. We loved this spot as it provided viewing of a vast amount of the area.

In an area with many rock formations, this is one more- very aptly named. We just did a ride by on the motorcycle and stopped to take some pictures.

The road there could get you stuck!

Mountain bikers: After you exit 191, 16 miles North of Moab, on Mill Canyon Road, you will go in 1/4 a mile and there will be a wash which on 12/4/14 was full of sand and got me stuck. It cost $195 to get winched out and AAA would not pay because it was off the pavement. Don't proceed on sand without a 4x4!

Trail eroding into a lot of sand
We just did this trail a few days ago. It seems some heavy rains had been through recently and washed out a lot of the trail and we had to walk our bicycles about 1 mile through thick sands and eroded trail. Once on the slickrock the trail was well marked but there were many before we got to the slickrock times we got lost because of unclear trail marking. The trail also took us out at the wrong spot from where we began and we had to figure out how to get back to our car. Not a fun prospect for folks from out of town. It's a very pretty trail but not for biking unless better maintained. We did not have a fun experience on this trail.

OHV All Day Long!

We have done this trail several times. This time we had a jeep and 4 ATV and we had a terrific day. Make sure you bring plenty of water and sunscreen because you are out in the open the whole time except when you go to Tusher Tunnel. The good part of this is that any skill level from novice to expert can enjoy this trail. The scenery is spectacular and you are not that far off the main roads even though you feel like you are in another world.
