I read a few articles online about this place and became interested before my visit to Romania. It is actually extremely tragic but also really very unusual. The village was basically told by Ceaușescu to vacate so the nearby copper mine could use their valley to dump the waste products from the copper extraction process. They were told they would not have to vacate far, promised money - the amount of which they believed would make them rich and told that the graves of there ancestors would be moved. None of these promises were kept.
Today. you can see the church spire sticking above the slurry. It won't be visible for many more years as the lake rises about a metre each year. We saw the pipe where sludge continues to pour into the lake - a little further north from where the church is visible. If you do a little online research you can see photos where more of the church was visible. I was amazed to find that a few people did not leave the village and remained living around this toxic lake. We passed one of them with her cow (I think she is also in one of the online articles: Maria Prata and her cow!)
To get to the point where you can see the church sticking out form the lake, you need to drive down a track for about 6/7 km. It is a slow journey but perfectly navigable with an ordinary car. Stay to the west of the lake and the church can be seen from the track that is a dead end that goes down to the second 'section' of the lake. The church is marked on Google maps if you zoom in. In the distance from this track you can see part of the mine in the background too.

Do you have specific directions to get to the place where we can see the spires of the church steeple coming up out of the lake? Is that still visible? Can you just drive around the lake and get out anywhere to hike? Thanks!
