I’ve had a wonderful 10-day hike through the 1000 hills of Rwanda. Although it was really hard sometimes, the beautiful sceneries and happy people on the way made it really worthwhile.
I asked Alex to accompany me on the hike and I’m really glad I did. Alex is a tour guide and since he grew up in the area he knows a lot about the surroundings. He arranged everything perfectly. His English is also very good and most important: he is great company! Unforgettable!

We had the most astounding trek along the Congo Nile Trail with our incredibly wonderful guide, Mansuet Umugwaneza. Because of his familiarity with the trail and the environments and communities through which it passes (he is a pioneer of the trail), combined with his multilingual fluency (English, French, Kinyarwanda), we were able to experience this beautiful place and its people at a level far deeper than if we were trekking alone. On the narrow pathways and rough dirt roads winding through busy villages on the hillsides, isolated stretches of Lake Kivu’s shoreline, and densely cultivated slopes and patches of forest, our three-day trek from Gisenyi to Musasa allowed us to see Rwanda in a more intimate way. Apart from the guesthouses we stayed at each evening, we were surrounded by the everyday life of the region: groups of women and men working the fields, people going about their business in the villages, children playing football on the roadways, men and women laboring with loads of sand and baskets of fish along the shoreline. Mansuet helped us engage in conversation with the people we met, as well as escorting us around cross-cultural blunders. Additionally, since he knew that we were very interested in the birds and plants, he tailored our trek to maximize birdwatching opportunities. We were never rushed along! Even though we walked a hilly 15 km each day, there was always plenty of time for birdwatching, appreciating the environment and visiting with the people we met.
If you want to get off the beaten path in Rwanda, this is a great opportunity, and a fantastic guide!

This was an amazing trek. We started in Gisenyi and spent three days walking through fields and along the shore ofLake Kivu. Our guide, Mansuet Umugwaneza, knew the area well and scheduled our trip with care. Thanks to him we saw places and things we might have missed, and because he is fluent in French and English, he explained what we were seeing.
Some of the things we saw along the way- coffee plantations; people working on their farms (banana, cassava, yams, mangos, avocados, carrots and more); more than 60 kinds of birds; small villages; fishing boats- it felt like some of the real Rwanda.
We stayed at the nice guest house in Kinunu and enjoyed it, but the rustic camp lodge at Cymbiri was our favorite because it was right on the lakeshore.
We are experienced hikers and travelers, but I’m really glad we hired a guide. We met some folks who didn’t and ended up taking several wrong turns. The paths are fairly easy walking, but there are lots of intersections and side paths and it seems like they change according to conditions.

A faire !

My sister and I just got back from hiking the Congo Nile trail for 4 days starting in Gisenyi and ending in Kibuye. It was a fabulous experience. The people, especially the older adults and children were so welcoming and fun. They greeted us with curiosity and a bit of skepticism at first, but after exchanging a few greetings in their language, Kinyarwanda, it was similes, and warmth all the way around. The trails surround Lake Kivu which is a large pristine lake, with breathtaking views along the way. We hiked the trail with a wonderful local guide, Caesar Niyonkuru. He made the hike so much more interesting by educating us about local village life, taking us through local markets, and helping us navigate the sometimes rocky trails. He was so patient and kind and knowledgeable. Don't just go to Rwanda to see the gorillas, spend some time with the locals. The country is pristine and safe!

This is a real grand experience of Rwandan villages plus food crops and cash crops all along the trail from Rubavu to Karongi or vice versa

Some of the scenary is beautiful but is often spoilt by traffic and children screaming "how are you, give me money" all day...it gets old after the first day. The hike itself is almost always on the roads except for day 2 and 3. We have done a lot of trekking and this one is way down the list of trips I would recommend.

Hi I am thinking of doing this trail solo, probably not the whole trail from Gisenyi but probably something like from Gisenyi to Karongi or something. Would you say this trail can be easily done by a solo female traveler? Would you recommend I have a guide to walk with? Cheers! I cannot wait to do this trail.

Sorry for being that late....was not here for some weeks.
When starting in Rubavu (Gisenyi) there is a first stop at the nearby bay 5km south of Rubavu. Some good Restaurants and goof Hotels. Here the real Trail starts.
The first 5 km or so are in goiod conditions, good for cycling and some cars nay come along. But after a few Kilometers more the road conditions are getting worse. No Problem if you intend to walk, but cycling becomes a real challenge. Some passages you will even not be able to manage without pushing your bike.
Along the way there were 1 or 2 "Homestays". Seemed to be Basic.
There are also 2 coffee washing stations along the way that offer little accommodation.
The first real accommodation is at Kinunu where you can find the "Base camp" and Rushel Kivu Lodge. I stayed at Rushels which was really outstanding good.
Along the road further south you'll find more complicate to find accommodations. I think there was a Basic accommodation along the way at least in Bumba.
From here there is a brand new road. Or you can walk along the Trail into Kibuye.
To be honest: the road from Kinunu to Bumba is a real challenge. Many parts are to steep for cycling, one Bridge was torn away (probably bay a flooding) and only three Trunks of a tree where there to cross a small river. another concrete Bridge was in very poor condition.
It's o.k. if you are walling, it's challenging for cycling (you'll have to push your bike for Kilometers) and ist's absolutely impossible to drive the Trail with a car.
Best regards
Thomas
