Situated in Bidar, and it's most famous landmark, this is a remarkably well preserved monument.
A prime example of the monuments of that period, recommend reading up on its layout for understanding how the defenses are laid out. Through well preserved doors, passing a few foundations of palaces and holy places, one can also see a maintained garden.
Traversing out of the fort and exploring the outer areas, one comes across ruins of the powder magazine, the prisoners hold and a gun tower with its cannon still intact. Along with ruins of a few walls.
The only jarring experience is the cropping of new construction near the fort.
Overall, an educational visit, recommend reading up on the fort before visiting.

It's a large fort and will need atleast 1-2 hour. Visit during early morning if possible before it gets hot. Most places like rangin Mahal, chini Mahal etc are locked ( Mar-2023). So you will miss them. Fort needs more signage and guides. Entry is free and the fort is open from sunrise to sunset.

Visually impressive but outside of the ruined spaces, very little accessible. Rangin Mahal, mosques and other buildings locked tight, nobody seems to know when they were open. Interpretation and way finding poor.

It is a big fort with a perimeter wall of nearly 5.5 kms (original length). The fort has no entry fee and all public vehicles have parking space outside the fort complex.
Fort walls are made of sturdy stones locally found at that time. Overall, except for the main complex near the solah sthamb area, rest of the areas are poorly maintained. The lawn in front of this area has shrubs, parthenium weeds which are also watered, rather than bein cleaned or removed, and has hardly any good grass being grown. Museum has many good collection of muskets, history of the place, etc.
Triple moats are covered with weeds, waste material, green-
State government has to start levying a small fee for entry so that the premises could be maintained well.

An excellent fort not so spoken about generally. This fort is as good as Golconda if not better. The Museum within the fort is a must visit for school kids interested in History.

Fort is really nice. You can walk and appreciate the construction of age old times. Read the description at the entry point - very informative. It mentions moats which Kings built for their kingdoms.
Really cool fort. Inside a cafeteria is there but it’s ok.

This fort is at around 2km from Bidar bus stand. This fort seems to be very old and there is a damage to lot of monuments .They are taking care of the ruins very carefully and part of the fort is not accessible due to safety and security reasons. There is a musuem infront of Rang mahal where we can see some ruined stone objects.

Bidar is a small town in the northernmost tip of Karnataka state. It is about 135 km driving distance from Hyderabad. The Bidar Fort is the most impressive and historic monument in Bidar. Sultan Alla-Ud Din Bahman of the Bahamani Dynasty built this fort when he shifted his capital from Gulbarga to Bidar in 1427. The fort compound is protected by a moat and a wall. There are about 30 monuments inside the fort compound.
When we visited the fort in October-2020 there were very few visitors due to the restrictions on travel during the pandemic. There is a parking lot next to the entrance. There were some security guards posted at the entrance gate and we had to enter our details even though the parking and entry was free. We were quite impressed with the imposing structures, though they were in a decaying condition, and the wide moat which was surrounded by the fort walls. There were well laid out gardens and parks and the monuments are being taken care of by the ASI.
The main monuments to visit inside the fort are the 1) Rangin Mahal (Painted Palace), 2) Takht Mahal (Throne Room), 3) Jami Masjid (Great Mosque), and 4) Sola Khamba Masjid (sixteen pillar mosque). One can easily spend a couple of hours browsing at the fort and admiring the ancient and imposing Persian style of architecture. A song from the hit 2011 hit Bollywood movie ‘The Dirty Picture’ was filmed inside the fort premises.
