Nanuoya is famous for its railway station of Sri Lanka's railway Hill Country main line and it is the closest railway station to the Nuwara Eliya.

Only visit if you are catching the train

You would only visit here if you were catching the train. Nice enough station that was somewhat chaotic when the train arrived

A mixture of a nice authentic historical place, and a disaster of raiway service experience

I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand, it looks great. The place has this atmosphere of a historical building, and most of the things, such as timetables, are old and original. But on the other hand, also the quality of whatever service gives an impression that it's very old and not updated.
The train that I was taking with my boyfriend had delay 2 hours. Later I have learned that this is normal. We were standing there for 2 hours outside, since the place is totally crowded. The waiting place inside of the building is for people with the tickets for the 1st class only, which we didn't have. At the same time, there are also toilets at the same waiting room. I didn't see anyone checking if the travelers have the 1st class tickets, but then I also didn't get why the station made the waiting room with the toilets only for the 1st class. Like only the 1st class passengers needed to pee.

Wow railway station

A place you should see and come out from the station to see the nuwaraeliya. From here only you can go for a good view to Ella or towards kandy. Very special to everyone.

Nearest Railway Station to Nuwara Eliya

Closest Railway Station to Nuwara Eliya Town. If you are planing your trip to Nuwara Eliya by Train Nanu Oya is the ideal station to get down. Even though Pattipola and Ambewela stations situated in Nuwara Eliya bound Nanu Oya station is nearest station from Nuwara Eliya town. Around 5-6 Km to Nuwara Eliya. There are local buses runs through this town (Nanu -Oya) or else you can hire a Tuk from this station. Station located in the Nanu Oya town. There is a eye catching water fall located near this station.

Overrated - get First class tickets

If you want to enjoy the experience get the first class tickets. We got 2nd class and it was a disaster. We were standing up most of the trip and there were too much people, because of that the ride was miserable.

We want to see world senic train ride so we start it from Nanu oya to Ella in the morning time .but at the morning all seat there book so we ride at the evening .this station is good spot to move to Nuwara Eliya and also Ella ,enjoy train trip

Rude ticket vendors and platform dudes

Is there no room for manners during Covid? I tried to purchase two first class tickets and was rudely informed that they didn’t have change for my 5000 lkr note. While I expect this scenario from tuk tuk drivers, I don’t expect it from a train station where I saw at least 50 people waiting for a train. I opted for the second class option which turned out to be okay. But the rude behaviour of the ticket agents was unacceptable.
Only to add insult to injury, the platform guy who looked like a cop scolded my friend in Sinhalese to tell me to wear my mask properly. I was later informed that this individual used profanity on my friend. Highly uncalled for. There is no excuse for rudeness such as this.
Other than that,the train ride was lovely

Treinreis van Nanu Oya naar Bandarawela

Uren wachten op een trein.
Sri Lankanen die op honden kloppen met stenen en stokken, gewoon schandalig.
Op zo'n moment krijg je een totaal ander beeld van de mensen van Sri Lanka!
De treinreis op zich was leuk, zeker als je in derde klasse gaat zitten, tussen de lokale bevolking.
Of dit nu een meerwaarde is voor je reis in Sri Lanka, laat ik in het midden.
