This is unique historic place to visit. Please ensure to ready to walk and take sunglasses / hats and plenty of water. Overall it is good place however considering cost (boat ride is 100 per person and 5 per person in fort. and parking is 100 per car) it is little costly and does not make it worth it. There is guide available which can be additional cost (500 /- and onwards). Without guide it is just structures. It is not as informative to go by yourself. Getting into boat and out can be little challenging for senior citizens and with small kids. This closed at 5 PM. You need good 3-4 hours to complete.

I visited the fort a second time in October 2022 and was very disappointed. The place was over-crowded to say the least. Worse, it was dirty.

During the 10 minute boat ride to the fort, I saw tourists merrily throwing plastic and other litter in the water. Far from warning them, the boat men made their own contribution to the filth by spitting into the water continuously.

I saw indulgent parents encouraging their child to pee and do potty right next to the jetty. All this, within a few metres of the spot where tourists were scuba diving to see corals and marine life.

The fort itself was a mountain of garbage. Stalls selling juice, bottled water either did not have dustbins or the dustbins were never used by tourists who simply tossed their litter wherever they wanted.

It was such a sorry state that we were fed up and left the place within minutes.

If you are going to this place, please, please - do not litter!

It is great, to reach there by ferry and it's ticket in Rs. 90/- person
In fort there has many place to visit
Sindhudurg fortress lies on the shore of Malvan town of Sindhudurg district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra which is 450 kilometres south of Mumbai. The fort lies on a rocky island just off the coast of Malvan which is accessible by a boat from mainland. The district is named after the fort of Sindhudurg which means 'Fort in the Sea'. Sindhudurg has 37 forts, the highest number of forts in Maharashtra as well as all types of forts Jaldurg (fort on Sea), Bhuikot (fort on land) and Giri (fort on hilltop).
The hidden entrance! Unless you are a regular visitor, the entrance gate 'Dilli Darwaja' cannot be seen from anywhere. If an unfamiliar person tried to enter via boat which is the only option apart from air, it is sure that the boat would thwack on the rocks around the fort which again cannot be seen with naked eyes. Hence only people who are familiar with the fort premises would be able to enter the fort. A king with brains and guts! Along with the architectural brilliance and unique ranks, this fort also has temples inside it dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, Lord Hanuman and Jarimari. Along with these holy shrines, there is also a popular temple which is devoted to Shivaji, the only one of it's kind in the world. There are also hand-prints as well as footprints of Shivaji which have been embedded within the fort on a slab.

We hired guide for this visit and it turned out a good decision. It's a 48 acre island converted into fort and it is interesting to listen to it's whole process.Few families are still living in the fort and they are using the sanitation, water supply facility available since last 350 years. Even the main door of fort is still in use. Ferry service is available which allow tourist one and half hour to visit fort.

SINDHUDURG FORT is famous historically as the center from which Shivaji and the Marathas began to co trol the seas around Marashtra and challenged the Portuguese who were the dominant and piratical sea power - they even looted the Mughal Jodha begum's personal trading ships. We took a local guide ( 600) and he told us a lot of history thats not so well known. A hand print and foot print of Shivaji are preserved here with a temple to Shivaji himself. Hindu and Muslim families dating from shivaji's times still stay there.

We went with family. It is situated 15 min travel from malvan beach by ferry. The forte is historically very important as it shows construction talent of 16th century . 100 Rupees is entry ticket and 5 rupees tax . Overall from entrance to all area is very poorly maintained. No cleanliness. We hired one guide who charged 600 rupees . It is better that we should know all about it before as the knowledge of guide is very poor. Overall very disappointing experience .
Felt very bad about overall attitude of administration and the people staying inside .

Good place to visit. Offers panoramic view of the ocean. There is a good enough walking path over the peripheral wall. On negetive side, place is not very well maintained. The fort has a rich history but you won't fine a single board informing about it, as they have in other ASI monuments.

*Sindhudurg Fort* , Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his Team of dedicated Soldiers in Konkan region of Maharashtra, India*.

Completely surrounded by sea and only access through the main door - Buland Darwaja - fitted with pointed huge spearhead nails to protect.

The fort is surrounded by very very strong rock fence duly glued with mixture of zinc, jaggery, limestone n intermittent fitting unseen bolts.

The peripheral wall has got openings for throwing the canon balls o enemy ships and also has criss cross holes through the wall for guns, magically arranged as such that the enemy guns can't hit back through the holes, this making the enemy easy prey to the soldiers occupying the positions on the Peripheral wall.

The fort still stands tall with all its majesty despite facing the salty winds and water at its base without any harm to its structure.

Boats do a brisk business of ferrying guests to n fro to the Fort. Also shops do sell some small goodies and replica n books of Shivaji Maharaj history and incidents.

Water base adventure sports have got a strong base now with para sailing, speed boats n scooters remaining at the demanding positions.

A must visit fort in Konkan to understand the strategic setting and how Konkan was controlled by Raje from Sindhu durg.

If you find the review of any use, kindly like it and write back with your remarks.
