A simply amazing structure when we caught sight of it. A truly unusual sight for this part of the world. We could not wait to stop and wander under it and take photos. Very picturesque background of greenery and even horses grazing under it. There is even a walkway under it from one carpark area to the one on the other of it, to allow visitors to safely walk and take photos, without walking on the main road. We were very fortunate to actually witness two trains passing over it whilst we were looking. A must-see detour off the Calder Highway if you are in the area. Not far from the Taradale Mineral Springs Reserve with an upgraded playground.

This wonderful bridge was built about 1861 for the so-called Main Line in Victoria, Australia which ran and still runs from Melbourne to Bendigo.
It is great to observe a train rushing across this impressive viaduct while you are in a car passing through Taradale on the Calder Highway, which I have done several times this year.
Taradale railway station is closed to passengers but the bluestone buildings remain in use as a private 'holiday house' so to speak.

This is a classic walk in the park,or a walk along the viaduct,to be more precise. Its a magnificent edific, being one of the longest and highest railway bridges in Victoria.
We left our car in the main street and walked towards the bridge along a footpath that takes you through open ground with a water race on one side and a splendid 19th century house and barn on the other.
The viaduct is 198 m long and 36.5 m high-a remarkable achievement considering it was constructed without the use of modern machinery. The steel trestles were added in 1930 to give extra support for the newer and heavier locomotives.
A cast of 2000 men and 1600 horses built the line between Gisborne and Castlemaine. There is a story about a man who fell from the top of the viaduct during its construction but luckily landed in the creek unharmed. Apparently a short time later the same man fell into a relatively small hole, broke his neck and died!
Ther is magic invested in bridges and this one ticks all the boxes.

The town is also located on the Melbourne to Bendigo railway line, although the station was closed in 1976. Designed by William Bryson, built between 1858 and 1862 the viaduct carries the railway 36 metres above Back Creek.
Interestingly there is another viaduct worth seeing in Malmsbury and after seeing photos of it online, I did not think this was going to compare to it. How wrong I was. It's definitely different to historic viaduct in Malmsbury. It's almost graceful ... rather like a giraffe actually. It is supported by massive bluestone blocks 37 m high, supplemented in 1933 by steel girder columns to take the weight of heavier locomotives and fully loaded goods trains.
And yes, giraffes fascinate me... I can watch them for hours...moving slowly about with their long graceful limbs... but I digress...
It's worth taking that detour off the highway to see this.

I couldn’t stop the first time I drove past this amazing structure, but I have made time since to have a close up look and wander under it! Icing near by hasn’t jaded my wonderment of this work of engineering art! I feel especially lucky when I watch a train speed over it.... mysteriously at night! Worth the time to have a look.

This train bridge is well worth stopping to see. The bridge crosses the gully of Back creek in Taradale which was a very prosperous town during the gold rush. Now it is a small sleepy little place with this amazing piece of engineering and the best wood fire pizza place. A great diversion off the Calder Highway as you can check out Malmsbury bridge too.

Taradale Viaduct is one of the engineering marvels you pass on the railway between Melbourne and Bendigo. You pass it soon after you cross the equally impressive Malsbury Viaduct at you head north to Castlemaine. Both were built in 1861 to transport people and goods from the goldfields to Melbourne.
Taradale Viaduct has five brick supports and rises 35m above the Back Creek valley. There is a car park, picnic area and a couple of memorials at the foot of the viaduct. Access is off the Calder Highway down De La Beche St. I saw it from the train and would love to know what was written on the memorials down below.
In the 1930's the bridge was reinforced with iron supports.

Didnt actually go to Taradale to see this was just travelling through, saw the viaduct from the main road and decided to have a closer look, easy to find and get a good closer look.
Really wonderful bit of history, well worth a look!
Traveller tip, dont follow road under viaduct as it goes offroad into the bush!
Have a look take some photos and turn around :)
