An interesting history of typesetting and letterpress machines, perhaps too many of the latter. Depicting the history of printing is a huge task, only 1 offset litho machine shown with no explanation as to the technology behind it. But it will be a constant work in progress given the huge strides in technological changes that have taken place over the last century.

Found at the far side of Camara de Lobos, this printing press museum was relatively cheap to enter. Really good value. As you enter the building, you go down a level and someone should be there at a desk. The staff were lovely and were happy to introduce us to the building and what the museum had to offer. To start, there was a short presentation. Then the top level of the place is looked at before heading downstairs to look at the amazing machinery from days gone by. Some really interesting stuff. Towards the end, there is a video you can watch which shows a printing process. There are toilets available in the building too which were clean and tidy. Overall, a very nice museum with lots to look at.

Ahead of our holiday we'd discovered this museum via one of the maderia web sites, however could find no information once there. Took the Yellow Bus out to Camara De Lobos and had a good wander around, stumbling across the very place we'd gone to see! 5 Euros each and then they turned the lights on and started the film, amazing place to find the history of the printed word! Everything there had been at somepoint used on the island...incredible collection. As we were there in December there was a lovely display of Christmas cards from the 1950's that were printed and sent on Maderia...a different age.
Amusingly, the route the bus took to leave Camara De Lobos took us past the museum...and was mentioned on the commentary!
Also, noticed a few people wander into the top take a look and leave...I wonder if they thought it would be Wine Presses not Printing Presses?

After walking to the town from Funchal we stumbled across this museum by accident whilst wandering around. Going in out of curiosity we found a collection of print and print related equipment. In this age of digital books and electronic printers it was fascinating to see the complexity of some of the printing presses.
Similar to a previous reviewer we were granted free access as the hall in which the museum is housed was being prepared for an evening event.
Anyone with an interest in printing, or specialised machines, will enjoy this museum.

We visited this museum as my husband used to work in the print trade. Unbeknown to us there was a seminar taking place on the day we visited with a lot of attendees. Despite this we were welcomed and allowed to look around for free. There were a lot of printing machines and associated implements and cards next to them telling you their origins. We had a good look around and as we left I thanked the young lady who had welcomed us and explained that my husband used to work in the print trade. She told us that all the machines etc on display had been used in and around Funchal before they ended up in the museum. She also invited us to have a free drink before we left. A lovely visit and very friendly welcome

Well what a find, we have a print management company in the UK and as an apprenticed compositor from back in the 1960's this was all about my youth and initial training in what must be one of the most useful and well used mediums worldwide Where would we be without the printed word? The size of the museum in a tiny fishing village was awe inspiring and the range of hot metal and wooden type, as well as typesetting and printing machines must be one of the most comprehensive collections under one roof in Europe if not the World.

I'm interested in printing and greatly enjoyed this museum which cost me only 2 Euro to get in. There's lots to see with a wide selection of letterpress machinery and typecasting equipment displayed in a very modern setting.

If you're into printing then this is very interesting and worthwhile. If not, you might struggle a bit.

The museum itself is actually quite large, and has a decent number of print machines and artefacts. There's not a huge amount of explanataion.

When we went, we were the only people there. They turned on the lights and the TV for us when we arrived, and turned them off when we left.

Personally, I found it fascinating, but I wonder how places like this can survive.
