Birdwatchers paradise! I was told there are over 140
bird species that have been identified here. We also saw sea turtles being released. Hotel/restaurant Barca de Ora is located on the edge of this beautiful estuary. You can book a boating tour through the hotel or rent one of their kayaks. The hotel is the closest hotel to the reserve’s office to pay for entry or your boat captain will get them for you.

Voyage au coeur de la mangrove

Belle balade en barque motorisée.
Nous avons vu des aigrettes, des pélicans et d'autres oiseaux.
Il vaut mieux faire cette promenade tôt le matin pour voir d'autres animaux

Balade en bateau

On a voulu le faire en canoë kayak mais c’était très physique donc le bateau était plus pratique. La balade dans la mangrove dure 2h. C’est tres agréable pour 45$ pour 2 personnes.

Vous avez le choix en fonction du budget en canoë 🛶 ou lancha ( motorisé) avec guide. Nous avons choisi lancha plus reposant. Il y a du courant qui peut rendre l’expérience du canoë difficile.
Dans un environnement calme ( pas beaucoup de touristes ) on s’enfonce dans cette mangrove avec beaucoup d’oiseaux. Nous avons également vu une famille de Ratons laveur, deux Caïmans. C’était très agréable.
Nous avons payé via la Barca de oro l’équivalent de 45 dollars pour 3h. Il me semble en canoë 1 gratuit avec une chambre puis 12 dollars.

Turtle freeing

I kayaked on the water between the island and the mainland. We stopped at the turtle reserve sign, because we knew A new batch was born and they were to release then today at 5. It was a unique experience. However, I feel sad that they leave all the turtles together in a small basket before they free them, because some turtles would exhaust ask their energy and be frazzled when they are put on the sand that they can't walk to the sea.

A very nice experience

We were seven people in the boat, together with our two guides filipe and Miguel. The boat was nice, and the two guides showed us a lot of interesting birds, crocodiles, snakes and crabs. They took us to the beach and opened fresh oysters for us to try and showed us some cool fish and shells. Finally they took us to a more calm beach to take a swim. A very good day - thank you filipe and miguel

A very unique little tour around the island. We saw many beautiful bird that I had not seen in other parts of Central America. The guide was friendly and helpful. Gorgeous mangrove trees untouched by mankind. Wish I brought binoculars or a good camera to see the birds better.

Great trip! beautiful scenery; very peaceful and quiet; lots of birds. You can also visit the sea turtle sanctuary.

Hire a lancha for a wonderful guided tour

The natural mangrove forest is an ecosystem all its own. We hired a lancha for a 5-hour tour for 30 USD pp - well worth it. You also have to pay 3 USD pp to the national parks system for entrance. The trip by boat, winds through the mangrove forest, and with luck you'll see many different types of birds and all different sizes of crocodiles, from bitty babies, to big mamas. Many people rent kayaks, but I enjoyed the knowledge of our native guide - Bernillo. He also took us to a secluded beach where we found many different types of shells and sand dollars. Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring bottled water (you can also bring beer, if you prefer).
