If you happen to be around, this abbey is worth an hour. Interesting mix of eras in a picturesque setting. The traces of an 8th century church are fascinating.

The visit is quite quick because little to see.
The church is pretty with all the red marble
I am disappointed by the (modern) cloister. The only interesting thing about the cloister is not the architecture but the exhibitions.
Nevertheless the Award corresponds well to what we visit. And if you have the pass, you get a discount.

The visit to the abbey lasts approximately 40 minutes with first the church, then its old foundation, the cloister, access to the rooms upstairs and on the ground floor where the artists' paintings are exhibited, ending on a garden shaded by climbing plants.
The church is interesting to visit, otherwise I am disappointed by the modernity of the renovation of the cloister as well as the rooms of the abbey which do not at all reflect its Romanesque and ancient style
The exhibition of paintings for me do not correspond to the style of the abbey which are all abstract or offbeat art
And it's a shame that there are no trees and more plants in the shaded part at the back of the abbey.

In the surroundings of Carcassonne, visiting the Caunes-Minervois abbey is a good combo to escape the anthill of the medieval city without moving away from it.
Please note, the site closes between noon and 2 p.m., so do not plan a visit at this time. The schedules are well respected, however, which is pleasant. The tourist office adjoins the abbey, which is not bad for getting information.
The welcome is professional in the sense that precise information is given to us on the progress of the course, all with a smile. A leaflet is provided, which is not a bad thing because the explanations on site are not numerous, they are sometimes even non-existent. But the leaflet saves the furniture somewhat. Entrance costs six euros and it takes about an hour to visit all the parts.
The visit begins with the refined 18th century cloister. Surrounded by semicircular arches, without columns or capitals and without decoration, it is bathed in the sun. Its original state is obviously not the current one because renovation work took place in the 20th century but it respects the spirit of the Maurist monks, very inclined to sobriety. Large panels furnish the route highlighting local crafts and artisans.
The second stage is located under the cloister as we descend towards the foundations of the church with its polished pebble floor, its freshness and, above all, a pattern which made me think of a labyrinth or the design of a cloister, composed of polished pebbles. A priori, no one knows its meaning. Perhaps he was there to make those who passed by think.
We then go back to the 14th century abbey church and its 12th century nave. Red marble is omnipresent, notably in the chapel of the Virgin and Child. A baptismal font is made of it. Furthermore, I appreciated the magnificence of the chapel located in the transept to the left of the altar on the holy martyrs, including a welcome polychromy. On part of the walls, red lines outline trompe-l'oeil stones, thus embellishing the wall.
I also noticed the Stations of the Cross made up of painted wooden sculptures.
We were not able to take full advantage of the abbey church because a wedding was in preparation. But I was still able to linger on the stained glass windows. Some are modern but not contemporary, they consist of scrolls and soothing rounded shapes. I admired the main altar with marbles of different colors which brings cheerfulness.
Then we went down to the 8th century crypt. It even seems that the places date from Antiquity. I would have liked to have had explanatory panels, not leaving me faced with incomprehensible remains. The leaflet simply puts forward the idea that the arcuate part could be a vestige of the Carolingian apse, but nothing more. We must focus on a vermilion fresco whose meaning is not identified (all these approximations remain quite frustrating). On the other hand, when you look up, you notice that the ceiling has obviously been redone but that the concrete blocks have been left bare, completely breaking the charm of the place (this gave me the impression of finally being in a redone decor).
Before going out to admire the building from the outside, we pass through the lapidary room located at the level of the cloister. Fragments of statues, architectural remains, and a superb sarcophagus were grouped together, with little information. A panel highlights the star of the old chapter house which is an ivory pyxis... non-existent! I don't know where it is but certainly not in this small museum.
Then, we pass through a few white and bare rooms in which paintings by local artists are exhibited, everyone takes whatever interest they want. Personally, I did not linger and went out to admire the apse of the abbey church. It overlooks a small amphitheater and a garden. The central apse bears witness to two construction periods, one with red joints, the other with stones without colored joints. Two towers majestically frame the bedside.
The visit ends by stopping in front of the porch and the gate. Beautiful marble capitals deserve our attention.
The visit is interesting but I found it frustrating at times. No audio guide was offered to us even though it seems that audio points run along the tour route. Furthermore, the leaflet mentions the presence of a room allowing a virtual reality visit, but which we never saw. We need to improve the general museography, enrich the information because the abbeys are rich in stories and history. Despite these pitfalls, I highly recommend the visit.

Charmante abbaye. Nous avons visité le cloître, la crypte ancienne. Un endroit à ne pas rater pour ceux qui sont de passage dans la région. Idéale pour prendre l'air un week-end en famille.

Самом по себе здание сохранилось очень хорошо,но внутренего убранства никакого(( Нам бы хотелось посмотреть быт примерный что ли.Гораздо интересней было)) Поскольку был выходной день - вход бесплатный!

Wasn't expecting too much from this but genuinely it was well worth the visit with an entry fee of around €6.
Whilst the Abbey has lots to see, including various saints whose 'bits' are on display near the alter, it also has a number of exhibitions in rooms around the quad. Wasn't much interested by the comic display but the artifact display and open air theatre at the rear were good especially as the latter had a number of shady benches.
Plan for around an hour.

Cette abbaye est très belle extérieurement, intérieurement plus simple et moins intéressante, l'église est superbe on y retrouve évidemment la richesse locale le marbre rose et gris de la carrière Royale de Caunes Minervois , toujours intéressant de découvrir . Le village très joli . Le points négatifs si vous voulez déjeuner comme nous vers 13h45 dans les différents restaurants du village impossible les cuisines sont fermées et impossible de trouver un sandwich la boulangerie est fermée aussi . Dommage.
