It is now relatively easy to get to Matakana from Auckland. The new Northern Gateway Tollroad extension takes you to Warkworth, and from there, a new interchange leads to Matakana Road, bypassing Warkworth.

There are actually two markets. Matakana Farmers Market (the subject of this review) and Matakana Market, literally next to the farmers market. Being a popular market, it can get quite packed. There were a number of artisan stores selling produce, craft and food. Most were on the pricey side. I also felt that some of the Auckland markets had more choice and less pricey.

Matakana Markets: great snack/munchies venue - breakfast/brunch heaven. I have gait/walking challenges (stroke); I wear a legbrace. A crush of patrons, live music was heard following us. Flowers, food stalls, olive oils, Dutch produce, bakery, deli treats, fresh mozzarella, even bags, crafts & gluten-free pies, and more... Drooling French pastries, we finished them and queued again for some to take home. Delicious food, wares to take home or gifts; wandered through the charming township, found some more product-browsing; brilliant day out.

A Great few hours wondering around the markets. As you walk in you see a dog sitting service where you can leave your dogs while shopping. It is a attraction in itself. The food was great from fresh oysters to whitebait fritters . The fresh vegetables were fresh and big. The new season strawberry’s were delicious. I bought a big 1 kg of Manuka honey . Parking is free . The chocolate is beautiful and smells so good . Just along the road down a path is another market with clothes leather work jewellery lotions brick a brac baby clothes candles shells .

Remember when you were a child and going to farmers markets meant getting better quality produce at cheaper prices than what you could through traditional channels? Well, those days are long and truly gone.

Welcome to the new state where pastries cost 120% higher than for the same product purchased in the big smoke of Auckland. That’s right the humble pain au raisin, that costs typically anywhere from $2.50 to $3.50 in Auckland goes for $7.50 at the Matakana markets. Try a delicious almond croissant for $8.00. That’s right, you heard correct. I picked up one of those bad boys in Wellington recently for $3.80 but I guess almonds are grown by 6 Vestal Virgins in Matakana or they have special flower sifted over a 138-hour period to ensure only the top grains make it through to your plate.

I know what you are thinking. Yes but these pastries are” hand reared” from baby pastries and are free range, left to roam in the grassy meadows of Warkworth, Matakana and all over the Rodney district. These aren’t your caged pastries no, no, no.

Oh, and these extreme price fluctuations are across the board for all foods. Try a cheese and salmon bagel for $15.00! That’s more than a trendy café in Ponsonby where you can get a seat and it has table service and no throngs of people jostling for position.

Surprisingly the coffees and on par with normal pricing. I guess the milk is not free range and the coffee beans are caged.

The other element to the markets located in the older section up above the food pricing from sells mostly faux antiques and knick knacs that appeal to some people. I did notice you can pick up a suitcase or antique “hope chest” like Grandad or Gandma use to have for $3450.00. I wouldn’t take these items on an airline though, as the modern baggage handlers will destroy your newly purchased antique $3k luggage (they are not that solid) . So, these items are strictly for aesthetics.

Time to look for new markets (maybe markets will become something of yesteryear). The hordes of people and crazy prices make this place a no go. I heard a lot of accents on my most recent trip here and so perhaps this is for the tourists only. Let’s sell to those overseas suckers. They won’t know the difference. We can screw those guys hehehe

After hearing great reviews, we thought we would head there with our two kids (6 and 9 years old). We arrived at 9am. It was already crowded. So full you could hardly move in parts. The selection of food was ok but expensive for what it was, but not particularly diverse or ‘must eat’. The vendors were all somewhat friendly. Some were a bit stroppy because it was so busy. We thought there would also be more fresh and local produce but there was only a small-ish selection.... By the time we left around 1030 it was impossible to move and just too hectic. Perhaps if they used some of the car park they could offer more space for people to sit, eat, drink and a wider range of produce, stalls.

Immensely popular, opens at 8 am on Saturdays. Very crowded at 9:30 am to 10:30am but managed to have the best dumplings ever! And a fresh smoothie. Wasn’t crazy for the chocolate pastry thing from a bakery starting with a ‘R’. Lots of food options such as fresh oysters, tacos, donuts, olive oils, spices, cheese... and the cider - some terrific tasting not too sweet apple cider! Free parking off the main road to the right (if coming up from Auckland) before you turn to go to the market. Cool but BUSY.

We enjoyed our time here. Spend around 1-2 hours as there were food stalls and live music as well. Good produce but the price wasn't cheap at all otherwise it would have been a great place to shop vegetables. Food and drink options were very good. We bought some organic wine which was nice. There was a nice quite stream going through on the side and a lot of people were seating on the banks enjoying the sun and listening to the music.

If visiting Matakana village on the weekend then visiting the farmers village is certainly worth the time to explore. It’s mostly houses food stalls selling local products. Parking can be problematic.

There's something to please everyone at this tidy and ever popular market. Highlights for our group included fresh oysters in the half shell and mussel fritters from a stall way down the back and tucked in on the end nearest creek.

We purchased local wild honey, breads and smoked fish to take home.

This is a busy market with lots of prepared food stalls, bakery, oils, crafts etc. Great to spend time, but it can get busy! If you’re looking for fresh fruit and vege this isn’t the place as there are limited vendors. Don’t forget to go to both “halves” of the market.
