Left wanting
lug 2021
Did the Summit Experience and I must say, I was disappointed. We did the tour on 29th July and were booked in for the 630pm tour. Upon check-in at 610pm the Customer Service staff member said she was unsure if the tour would even take place, and we would know at 630pm. This with hardly a cloud in the sky and forecast was very good.

The tour took place, and with three tours booked for that night, we felt it was really rushed. You get driven to the summit where the guide points out stars of interest with a laser, then get a change to look through three telescopes. Our family consists of three and we couldn't make out what we were looking at as the stars were so small and not that clear through all three telescopes.

You get told that if anyone is cold, there is a room with a glass roof and heated floor, however no-one got to sample it, as once everyone has seen through the telescopes, its time to board the bus to go back to base. Tour complete!.
My recommendation would be to download the star gazing app and park on a hill. Sorry, but save your money

Kia Ora Patrick, Thanks for choosing Dark Sky Project and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are sorry to hear your experience did not live up to your expectations. We always monitor feedback really closely to ensure the experience evolves and continually develops. The Summit Experience is 1h45 in duration including transport, meaning customers will have 1h15 of stargazing - observation through naked eye and through telescopes (40min). Our tours aim to cater to guests of all levels of existing knowledge and understanding of astronomy. By talking through some of the fundamental principles behind what we're looking at in the night sky, we hope to ensure that every member of the tour group can appreciate the amazing view we enjoy from the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. We will discuss your points with the team – thank you again for the feedback. We welcome you to email us info@darkskyproject.co.nz with any further feedback. Thanks again for choosing us, and providing your comments. Ngā mihi, Manon

Great on clear nights
lug 2021
Very lucky with a clear night and full moon, so we had a great experience. They had 3 functional telescopes and plenty of time to look through them. Guides were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Service desk was very helpful with additional clothing hen our daughter was woefully underdressed for the cold night. Overall recommended.

Stellar Experience
mag 2021
The weather for our visit was just about perfect--viewing conditions were pristine and while it was reported that it'd be chilly up on the mountain, with the coats we were given (and the layers we wore underneath, as instructed) I hardly felt the cold. Plus, the information provided by Adrian and Dan was so interesting, and extremely well presented, that you had no time to feel the cold. We got to look through three telescopes (the largest one, in the dome, was being used and was not available for the tour, so a discount was given to us) and we saw some amazing things, from the binary star of Alpha Centauri, to the Sombrero Galaxy, the Jewel Box Cluster, and a globular cluster (NGC 3951?). Truly fascinating!

Great View and Knowledgeable Staff
apr 2021
Booked the Summit Experience at Mt John Observatory online a month before visiting. The Dark Sky Experience didn't interest us and the Crater Experience at Cowan's Private Observatory was unavailable. Tried to use a discount code (Entertainment Book) but it wouldn't work online. Emailed Dark Sky Project who replied promptly saying they would action a refund when we checked in and showed our EB discount code (even though it was already emailed through to them).

Were advised before we started that there was a bit of cloud cover and it was windy (DSP gave everyone the option to rebook for another night, but that wasn't an option for us), but we took the punt to go anyways.

I get carsick so was concerned knowing we were going up a hill in a bus, but its not a bus, more like a mini-van. Also had to wear a mask (thanks Covid) in the mini-van going up, but it wasn't enforced in the mini-van going back. Most of us adhered to the mask wearing (but not everyone).

Antarctic jackets provided by DSP are super warm.

Disappointed that you never got to see the UC Mt John Observatory in action. Even a quick walk around the inside of it would have been great. However their wording is spot on "See more, see further with New Zealand's ultimate mountaintop stargazing experience at the world-renowned astronomical centre; UC Mt John Observatory" ... ... "Exclusive to Dark Sky Project, the Summit Experience at Mt John Observatory is in partnership with the University of Canterbury". They never state you are going to see the inside of the observatory, or even the telescope. Well worded DSP, well worded.

Instead, there were three smaller telescopes to view out of. However you felt like you could only look for a little bit, as the group was quite big in numbers.

Super friendly staff for the whole experience. Very knowledgeable about the stars etc. The use of the laser pointer to point out where constellations/stars/nebulas' are located was great.

We were offered a discount prior to getting on the mini-van to go back to DSP base in town, due to the cloud coverage. That was a nice offer, not expected, but nice. Both the refund for EB discount and cloud coverage were promptly processed.

Yes, you can take a bag with you (so you don't have to fit everything into your pockets);
No, you cannot take pictures at the top with your cell phone;
Yes, there is a toilet up there;
There is limited seating and they are concrete slabs, so not great for looking up at the stars.

CONCLUSION: Would we go again - not for that price, sorry. It was great knowing about the stars and having them pointed out to you, but we got almost as great a viewing of the stars/milky way etc from 5mins down the road from our accommodation.

Tops at the top!
apr 2021
Any interest in the stars and our galaxy will be handsomely rewarded by taking this tour. My wife and I were fortunate to strike a beautifully clear night and I guess this is the only 'gamble' one has to take when registering for the tour. Our guides were, to say the least, well informed! They also could put everything into 'layman's language' though quite clearly scientists in their own right. We also were warmly greeted at the centre in town, where the receptionist, Amber, who had communicated with us by email before our visit, proved every bit as efficient in her role as those who received us at the summit. The work that this team does in adding to our knowledge of the universe cannot be underestimated.

Interesting but poor value
We booked months ago taking a punt on the weather and although the forecast was cloudy and the wind was 40-70kmh we were told if it was that bad we would be refunded on return so we gave it a go. Others just took the refund upfront.

So the lovely people got 19 of us kitted out in antarctic jackets and we boarded the bus for the 15min trip up the mountain. We honestly think that the bus drivers have a competition to see who can get up and back down the very twisty road the fastest. Our driver must have been a front runner to win! On the way down i was lucky (?) enough to be in the front and 70kmh into a recommended 55 corner was scary for both the hardend passengers inside the bus as well as the bunnies on the road.

On the way up it was discovered the Uni telescope wasn't working (instant 50% refund) so we had 2 portable units for the 19 of us. So not ideal but they made the best of it.

What was good was the entertaining and informative naked eye with laser pointer section. This was great and in reality for us was the best bit by a long shot.

Was it worth the original $150 per person - no, even with the big telescope working. Was it worth $75 a person after the refund - umm still not sure.

Is it cool and interesting - yes absolutely, just not good value - but they are booked out so there you go.

Fantastic Sky at Night tour
mar 2021
Well organised tour with passionate and very knowledgeable guides showing us the sky at night. Really wonderful experience, and such an amazing starscape to behold with the benefits of the dark sky project well in evidence keeping light pollution at bay.
Since what you see is dependent on the sky being clear and the winds not being too strong, your experience may be very different from us.
Warm jackets provided

Expensive choice
mar 2021
We had perfect weather for star gazing and it's a slick, well managed operation with shuttles up and down to Mt John. The brief glimpses through the telescopes were truly amazing but overall this trip did not represent value for money and we were disappointed.

It could be improved with fewer people, commentary provided on the bus to and from the observatory, a summary hand out to take away and some temporary seating during the presentation.

Enjoyable, but too large a group
mar 2021
We chose a time when there would be no moon. The sky, with the clear atmosphere and no street lights is magnificent. The warm, down jackets were most appreciated even though there was hardly any wind. The explanations by the astronomer were informative and the laser pointer a great help in identifying the stars and nebulae. There were 2 telescopes set up. A group of 30 is too large. A few seconds to look through each is much too short. For the cost we expected more.
We knew the length of the path but it is quite rough. For a person with walking and mobility problems it was a challenge even with the assistance of a spouse. We suggest the path be made smoother.

Summit Experience Mount John Observatory
This was quite a mind blowing experience. We went on the 11pm tour. The sky was clear with no moon so the view of the night sky was incredible. Dan, Luka and Adrian were our guides. Their passion and knowledge was amazing. We learnt so much and got to see star clusters through the telescopes that were not visible to human eyes. I would do this again in a heartbeat.
