This is a beautiful uphill, yes challenging for me, hike through beautiful forests. The shade is nice if hiking in the summer. At the end, you have the Cascade Falls which are very pretty. Recommended.

I got some beautiful pictures and the sound of the water was so relaxing the trails were nice and clear just some rocks were a little unsteady and some were trip hazards but thats what hiking is all about

What's to say, if you're looking for a 2ish hour hike, rewarding views at the falls, then get out there! One of my favorite hikes in a long time.

Great afternoon hiking the Cascades NR Trail. Get there early to get a parking spot. Bring cash to pay the park fee. There are real bathrooms at the trailhead. Definately recommend the lower trail to get up to the falls, but wear good walking shoes (not sandals/flip flops). I would call this a moderate hike due to the number of rock steps to navigate and the amount of uphill. Bring water, especially if it is hot out. Saw some dumb people drinking directly out of the stream, which is a great way to get a parasite. Falls are really pretty with room to wander about on the rocks. BE CAREFUL - it is slippery. I saw several people take some pretty hard falls, because they were careless on the wet/slimy spots on the rock surfaces. Great spot for a picnic. The upper trail back has some quick up hill then down all the way and not very technical. It was definitely a great way to spend a morning.

This was a beautiful hike that ended in a spectacular waterfall. I am strictly a casual hiker and also well over 50, although in good shape. It was just challenging enough to be a bit of a workout. If you're worn out after the climb, there is an easier way back which we gladly took. The water in the stream is FREEZING cold even in June, but that didn't seem to stop hikers from wading in. I was happy just to dip my feet in. I would say be careful if hiking with small children because there are areas where you are hiking right next to a steep dropoff. I would worry if small kids were with me. Make sure you talk to children beforehand and instruct them to stay on the trail for their own safety.

The falls was beautiful, but I think there could be better information provided at the trailhead. First of all, there is a nominal $3 charge that you pay when you arrive. It appears to be an honor system, and you place your money in a mail slot. There are decent bathrooms (had no soap though) at the beginning of the trail. This is a 2 mile one way trip, so total 4 miles or so hike. There is an easier Upper Trail and a harder Lower Trail. The sign description states, "Take the Lower Trail for a more scenic hike that winds lazily around the creek. This trail includes several benches for resting, generous shade, and excellent views of Little Stony. Take the Upper Trail for an uphill challenge to the falls, or a quick downhill hike back to the parking area."
Based on the description, we chose the Lower Trail for a scenic hike and benches for resting and wanted to avoid the "uphill challenge". The Lower Trail is perfect for more avid hikers, but it wasn't a good idea for my family member in her 80s. There were multiple steps to climb, and narrow passages to go through. My elderly family member and husband ended up returning back part way, crossed the bridge, and took the upper trail home. I am in my early 50's, and I found the Lower Trail hike beautiful, yet pretty exhausting from all the windy steps we had to climb. We ended up taking the easier Upper Trail on our return back to the parking lot. It took us probably 1 hr 30 min with rest using the Lower Trail to the waterfalls, then 50 minutes back to the parking lot using the Upper Trail.
Bottom line, for those looking for an easier hike, take the Upper Trail. It has a wider path, with a few rocks in the dirt, and much easier then the Lower Trail. There are still steps that you need to take when you get closer to the waterfall. It's not as scenic though. You get up and personal with the creek taking the Lower Trail.

This is by far one of the best kept secrets of the Jefferson National Forest region. The river is set amidst incredible lush forest, with rapids flowing down - as you get to the top of the trail or the end, (2M) it treats you to an incredible 150+ waterfall that you can swim under and within its pool. Trout fishing is allowed (up to six per/person) ZERO BUGS and Mosquitos and this was in June!!!

Get rewarded at this easy out and back trail in Jefferson State Park. The Falls are beautiful. Hiking on the right side of the stream can be a little slippery and parts of the trail were a bit wet as we ascended. On the way back, it was an easy trek down the lose gravel walkway.

We had a wonderful day hiking the cascades! We hiked the lower trail up and enjoyed the walk on the river. Then took the upper trail back which was definitely the quicker option. It was incredibly gorgeous and well kept. There was a lot of foot traffic though and we were pacing other groups the whole time. I’d definitely return!

Nice walk with vies. Srs. can do this with a little effort. Trash along trail as we're dog bags. Pretty walk except for the litter.

How long is the trail total and what is the difficulty level? I've got kids who would love to see and swim near the falls.

I have a 10yo and 12yo daughters that can do the trail with no problems. It is a moderate trail in that the inclines in some spots are long and steep but if you take your time on them they are no problem. The trail is WELL maintained and you have the choice of taken the upper trail which is dirt and about 5 or 6 foot wide. The lower is also well marked but has some climbing on rock steps and stuff. All in all it is a great trail and one of our favorites.

Anyone know if there is any damage to the trail because of the flooding in the Virginias?

the trail did take a hit, but a two week stint by the Americorp volunteers put that to rights .
