Beautiful gardens but experience soured by extortionate prices - 2 scones, tea and a sandwich for the best part of £20! Nearly two quid for a small can of...(checks notes)...still water!!? The shop is equally "optimistic" with pricing - some of them actually made me laugh out loud.

I get that the food and merch goes towards the upkeep of the site and gardens but there is surely a middle ground where it doesn't feel like you're being robbed over a snack?

You can spend so long here wandering round the gardens looking at the various follies set out in the grounds. One thing to note, however, is that there is only one place to get refreshments, which is right at the entrance/exit - so you may want to bring your own food if you are planning to spend the day here.

We visited here particularly to see snowdrops, as Stowe was listed as a place to see them. However where we walked we only saw a few. We asked a staff member later where we could see the snowdrops, but it where they suggested was too far for my friend to walk. A buggy is available to take you to the entrance of the gardens, this was provided for us quickly in both directions and staff were helpful. The cafe is spacious and clean , some items seemed expensive for what they were - soup and roll was over £6. The gardens were interesting and scenic, especially around the lake, with water birds to be seen. The old inn was interesting. There is also a good second hand bookshop, well arranged with a lot of books.

The grounds of Stowe are extensive and make a lovely place to walk, in our case with a dog, but equally without. There are so many follies and structures of interest as you walk round, as well as plenty of wildlife. The cafe/shop part way round is dog friendly, but also has outdoor seating if you prefer. The main cafe has ample outdoor seating too. Car parking is plentiful and even when it is busy, the parkland is so large that you don't feel as though there are too many people around.

Thanks for looking after this historic place. We came as a family for a Boxing Day walk. The GM was driving the buggy and gave us a lift back. Thanks. Very end of our experience slightly marred by service at the cafe kiosk- young woman at till doing nothing, service very slow and we queued for 15 mins to find that all the hot food not available but still listed on the menu. Perhaps a sign to explain or just wiping chalk menu off would have helped. Thanks

Gardens and halloween activities were good, but the trip took a turn for the worst when staff went out of their way to be rude.

My wife and I, both of us in our late sixties, decided to visit this National Trust gardens after seeing photos that our friends had taken during their visit, and we weren’t disappointed.

The gardens are extremely beautiful, and the amazingly warm and sunny October day made it even better to walk around and take in the stunning scenery. The ‘Standing With Giants’ installation is superb and really poignant at this time of year.

The one thing that we quickly realised as soon as we stepped out of the car was that we weren’t very well dressed or kitted out for this National Trust attraction. Everyone else was in hiking gear with rucksacks, when we were dressed for a day out wandering around a small garden and house, which this is not. Oh how we wished that we had prepared better, and my advice is to dress in sturdy shoes, take waterproofs – no matter what the weatherman says, and have a rucksack with water and maybe some snacks as the paths are extensive and it involves more walking than we had considered.

During the visit we also had a guided tour around the house, but this is not a National Trust property, so it cost us £7, but again is worth it as it just enhanced the day for us, in that the tour guide was knowledgeable and the history of the house is fascinating.

The one negative point is the signage to the place. We travelled down from Leicester and as we got within three miles of the site I drove past a sign with just the National Trust emblem on it pointing to a road to the right, but my SatNav was telling me to carry straight on. I carried on the main road, but the SatNav then instructed me to turn right around another mile down the road, when there was absolutely no signs for the gardens. I duly turned right but after driving around another mile I decided to turn back to turn off at the sign I had seen further back, as I hadn’t seen any other signs on the road we were now taking. I drove back, but passed the turning as the emblem sign is only facing one way and the other side of the road does not have such a sign. We had to drive another half mile before we could turn back. We eventually arrived at the car park, but when we left later on in the day we realised that if we had followed the SatNav we would have gotten to the place a lot quicker, so the moral in the story is trust your SatNav and don’t go following one little sign in the middle of nowhere.

I joined the NT as I live near Stowe. It’s not worth £13 a visit. The toilets near the entrance to the gardens are portable and disgusting and that’s at just after 10am. Clearly not cleaned as they open at 10am. I have found NT toilets to not be that clean at other places.

Beautiful place. Lovely walk. Buggy Bus provided if it is too far. Definitely long walks and lots to see and explore.
The only downside for us were the staff we met except two (lady in book shop and lady driving buggy) were all rather grumpy and rude. Whether it was an off day but a smile and a welcome goes a long way !

It is a very long walk from the car park to the ticket office. It is a very expensive walk unless you are an NT member! You need to use a provided map as the park is lacking in signage, it would be a good idea to mark each path with a direction sign. The views and walk are lovely but if you are expecting to see gardens you’ll be disappointed. As there are plenty of places to sit for a picnic I would take your own food because the cafe prices are way too expensive, nearly £28 for 2 coffees 2 teas and 4 portions of cake is ridiculous! The toilets are cleaner than some I’ve been in but you should note that these are near the car park so once you are in the park it’s a long way back to use the toilet!
