We had a personalized tour of the studio. Listening to the music and the history added to the ambiance. It was like a "Back to the Future" moment as if time stopped in the 50's. You could picture Buddy Holly eating in the kitchen and Norm doing his magic in what was considered a state of the art recording studio. When Holly performed in England, a young Paul McCartney recalls the tremendous impact it had on his life.
Thanks to Ken Broad and living legend David Bigham of The Roses and his wife, for sharing their stories. It is noteworthy to mention a few blocks down the Studios is the Norm and Vi Petty Rock and Roll Museum which we had already visited. Much of the displays at the Museum were provided by Ken and David. You got to see both to appreciate the experience.

We had a great visit to the studio and were made to feel very welcome by Kenneth and Shirley. We were also thrilled to meet David, of the band "The Roses"...who toured with Buddy Holly. If you ever get to Clovis...I urge you to visit this wonderful studio.

In 1960 about a year after Buddy Holly died, Norm Petty opened a new recording studio in a converted theatre across the road from the former garage which was his original studio. It remained closed and untouched until 1986 when his wife Vi opened it up to visitors.
Kenneth Broad, a long-time family friend who originally helped Vi when Norm died took over the baton when she passed away, and with the help of David Bigham (a former backing singer on several of Buddy's records) and his wife Maryline continues to offer studio tours for small groups today.
These are informal and very informative, while the chance to sit at Norm's control desk, see (and touch) all the original equipment, the studio, kitchen and sleeping quarters and maybe sing along with David (still in very good voice!) is something really rather special.
Kenneth lives out of town so tours do need to be confirmed a couple of weeks ahead. Also as neither he or David are as young as they were, how long the pleasure of meeting them and sharing their experiences will continue is uncertain.
Nick Mondragon at the Clovis Chamber Of Commerce should be able to help you to set up a visit-which is a must for serious Buddy Holly fans.
Finally Kenneth David and Maryline, thanks, it was a privilege to meet you.

Our son was just stationed at Cannon Air Force Base. He and his family live in Clovis. We had no idea that a recording studio was located there or has the history- that this one has. But touring it takes some work. It is available for tours by appointment only! You must contact the Clovis Chamber of Commerce. They w zveeill give you the number to call for a tour.
Ken Broad, an older gentleman gave us our tour. He is a walking encyclopedia about this recording studio. He gave a very relaxed tour, giving youthe opportunity to sit in the chair recording artists such as Buddy Holly, Bobby Vee, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, and so many more. As we
toured the small control room, he played numerous Buddy Holly records. Beautiful sound.
You then walk through the struthmall entry where the drummers usually sat. Then into the large recording room, where there are several guitars, pianos, organs, typewriter that typed notes, and so much trivia.
They only recorded at night after midnight so traffic on the highway didn't interfer. The facility was set up to allow singers/band to stay there. Complete with kitchen, bathroom, and livingroom/bedroom. Everything decorated as it was originally. It's truly a step back in time.
Ken was so knowledgeable. He makes this recording studio come to life.
Go....it's worth it.

It's difficult to add to the accolades already bestowed on the Norman Petty Studios. The entire time I was there, I kept thinking "I can't believe this is really here." Perfect preservation of the studio and adjoining apartment where Buddy Holly and others lived during recording sessions. Curators Ken Broad and David Bigham are the most gracious, kindly and informative hosts, along with Mrs. Bigham (whose first name I did not get.) I guess because the studio is not swarmed with visitors, you are permitted a very hands-on experience -- I got to play a few notes on the celeste that Vi Petty played on "Every Day" and whatever the keyboard instrument that sounds like a flute is called used in "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs. Everyone gets a turn in the chair in the control room used by Buddy, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Knox, Jimmy Bowen and others while listening to playbacks of their songs through the original equipment. What a thrill to hear Dave Bigham sing along with his backing vocal parts in "It's So Easy" and "Think It Over." All of this for a free-will offering. Do be very generous to these sweet and devoted people. Also be sure to make your appointment-only reservation several weeks in advance, going first through the Clovis Chamber of Commerce, which will put you in touch with Ken Broad, to whom Norman Petty entrusted overseeing the studio. The reason for the appointment requirement is that Mr. Broad lives 20 miles away and is not in a position to simply be sitting in the studio 40 hours a week. Robert Plant and Duane Eddy, among others, made the trek here. And so should you if you have any interest in the roots of Rock and Roll. Deep gratitude to Mr. Broad and the Bighams for their magnificent work.

The building comprises the recording studio, control desk and apartment for musicians to relax in, all exactly how it was in the 1950s. Our guide, Kenneth Broad, gave us a wonderful tour, adding so much information from his encyclopaedic knowledge and showing us many items of memorabilia. He also played some of Buddy's recordings through the huge speakers in the studio, which sounded as fresh and dynamic as if they had just been recorded yesterday.
The studio is an absolute must-see for anyone interested in music, and we had a great time walking in the shoes of a true rock'n'roll legend and soaking up the atmosphere where he recorded his best work.

I was able to get a private tour with one days notice. You are able to sit in the seats that have been occupied by Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings just to name a couple. An apartment is set up there where the musicians actually slept. Original stove, beds, fireplace, hi-fi stereos, and those that you crank as well. This is a must see place when going either to or through Clovis, New Mexico. Experience the Clovis Sound of the 50s-80s.

Was in Clovis to do Fred Harvey/ Santa Fe Railway History on the Gran Quivera Hotel, but was distracted by the Rock and Roll history of the town. I visited the Rock and Roll History Museum and drove by the Norman Petty Studios. One can make arrangements for a tour. The studio is not open on a regular basis.

Norman and Vi Petty are rock n roll legends. Buddy Holly and others recorded their greatest hits in this exact studio. Kenneth Broad and David Bigham are curators and have a personal history with the Pettys and Buddy Holly.

Dates Buddy Holly recorded
Climber28740

that is a lengthy answer, as there were numerous dates. A Buddy Holly website probably has the extensive answer.

I tried to 'phone Kenneth Broad on 01-575-356-6422, as I am travelling from the UK to visit Lubbock and Clovis for Feb 3rd, 2019, and desperately want to visit the Norman Petty Studios.
The number rings once then cuts off. Does anyone have an explanation/another number/another way to contact Ken to arrange a visit?

On Sunday, January 6, I called the above number and spoke with Kenneth. He mentioned receiving a phone call from England to set up a visit, so I am hopeful this was you. If not, the phone works at that number, and the Chamber of Commerce number above is good also.

I'm thinking about a trip to Clovis and Lubbock for Feb 3rd 2019, and saw a question, and its answer that arrangements were pretty vague. do visitors get to see the studio OK? Was the answer useful? Any advice you can give me, please?
Thanks,

Damian, you may call yourself an "Anorak", but I am planning to visit Lubbock and Clovis around Feb. 3rd 2019 - you'll know why. Your write-up was fascinating, and really whetted my appetite and got me excited about the trip.
Any tips you can give me would be welcomed, like how did you fly? Did you rent a car? What are the roads like (and speed limits)? Did you need to book ahead a long way for NPS, or for accommodation?
Hello! The closest international airport to Clovis is the Lubbock Airport, and if you can't fly directly into Lubbock, then there are usually connecting flights from Dallas or other larger airports into Lubbock. I do recommend renting a car, as Lubbock and Clovis are not walking cities, and shuttles between them can be unreliable at times, and expensive at best. If you do rent a car, then you can follow US 60-84/ the Clovis Road from the Lubbock airport all the way into Clovis. It's a 4 lane highway, with a speed limit of 75 mph in Texas (minus a few small speed trap towns) and 65 mph once you hit the New Mexico border. It typically takes around 1 1/2- 2 hours to get to Clovis from Lubbock (we don't recommend trying to break Buddy's record either!). As far as booking ahead goes, we tend to say to book about a month out for the tour. I would also note that the Studio is not open on weekends, so you might look into visiting the Studio on either the 1st or the 4th. Also, if you plan to stay in Clovis, we recommend the Comfort Inn and Suites on Schepps Boulevard.
I hope that this is of some help!

I am in Australia but will be traveling to USA in June and the Clovis studios are a must see. Is it at all possible to contact Ken Broad or the museum by e-mail? I don't want to leave to chance that I may miss out on a tour if I wait to phone after I am in USA.
Yes! Visit the superoldies site for his contact information to schedule a tour.

Hi! The curators of the studio do not conduct Sunday tours of the studio, but they will occasionally do Saturday tours.
