Fantastic experience and amazing staff! I try to kayak at some point during each summer vacation, hands down this was one of the best experiences. The staff were super pleasant and patient. While the prices are unbeatable!

Had a great time kayaking from here. Staff were very friendly, cute shop, reasonable price. We went for 1.5 hours and it was a great amount of time to enjoy the Grand Cove.

Kayaking on the river was a great experience! And Bass River Kayaks made it easy. I am not an athlete so was a little nervous but it was easy. A great family activity - I went with my niece and nephews (12 years and 16 years) and all had fun. Highly recommend

Wonderful place! Everyone was super friendly. Staff explained everything about the river with a map which was given to us for the excursion. Quick lessons were given to us for kayaking and paddle boarding. It was nice that we could choose which activity to do. There are a few nice beach areas to stop at for a break. Reasonably priced. We went shortly after opening and it was not crowded.

We stopped in one morning to do an off-site paddle board rental without a reservation. They were absolutely slammed at the time with walk-in customers, but they handled it beautifully. Masterful multi-tasking! I was impressed. We had great service, the pricing was reasonable, and we were in and out quickly. I would certainly recommend them. (Also, the guy that loaded our board was a WVU grad, so another plus in our book! 💙💛).

We came down to the Cape to get away from the stress of the pandemic. Bass River kayaks definitely fit the bill. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Masks were everywhere as were hand sanitizers. Social distancing was definitely taking place at this establishment. Paddling on the bass River was beautiful and relaxing. I hadn’t been in a kayak in over 20 years, and this experience makes me want to go back over and over again. I highly recommend this company.

We rented in the third week of June (during Covid). All of the staff wore masks and there was zero contact between people. They greeted us outside, we didn't need to go into the building at all if we didn't want to. They also offered us a restroom and changing room that were clean and sanitized.
3 rented three paddleboards and 1 kayak. They brought all the equipment down to the water for us and helped us get settled with some basics and a map. All of the staff were super-friendly and professional.
Note: One of our paddleboarders had a hard time with it and we ended up towing him back (with the kayak). If you don't have good core muscles, paddleboarding may not be for you!
And, because we didn't have our phones, to our surprise we ended up staying out much longer than we were supposed to. (And it was the end of the day -- they probably wanted to go home!) But the staff was more than understanding and they just laughed it off.
Bonus: The restaurant Sundancer's is right behind Bass River Kayaks and it was easy to walk down and have dinner!

My husband and I had a great experience renting Kayaks from Bass River. The customer service was amazing! We were given a laminated map to take with us, shown the best routes, given the wind direction and currents. Prior to launching another employee reviewed procedures with us and put the kayaks in the water. Then, she reappeared just as we returned to help us out and take care of the kayaks. Usually when we rent kayaks we are given our kayaks and are on our way. The employees at Bass River went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience!

Hi,
We are staying in a house near Weir Creek with a dock. We were thinking of renting kayaks and paddling down the Bass River to our house. We (50-ish woman and a teen) are relatively inexperienced kayakers. I’ve actually kayaked twice on the river, but only north of 28. My kid had a few lessons on a lake. Would this be a safe thing for us to do? I’m guessing we should plan the trip when the tide is going out. Also, south of 28 there seems to be a lot of boat traffic. Are the lanes clearly marked? And how is the current? Again, we are pretty inexperienced and I don’t want to do anything too risky.
Thanks.

We stayed at a place on Weir Creek too. My daughters kayaked down the Bass River to our place on Weir Creek. I asked them of their experience and these are their comments:
“The staff is great and will not put you in the kayak if the winds are too strong or against the current. We saw two boats in our four mile trip down the river. We had no experience. The staff goes over everything in great detail.”
“ The people at the rental place will help guide them on tides etc. it’s relatively safe. The river will empty to the ocean so as long as they know where they want to end up it’s not too hard. When I called they were very helpful in the wind and tide concern. He gave a 20 min lesson to the kayakers on what to do and how to hold paddle etc.
I think they’d enjoy it for sure!!”
Many boaters are expressing frustration due to kayak and paddle board renters traveling in the clearly marked boating Channel on the Bass River. We've heard some renters say "you don't own the river" when we've politely suggested to them to safely travel outside of the boating Channel when you see boaters in their designated areas. For their own safety, kayak and paddle board renters should be educated to stay out of the boating Channel and safely near shore. Can an educational program be given to each renter before someone gets accidentally injured ??? It Only takes one accident to spoil a fun day on the water. Tourists need to be educated... Who should provide that education? Hopefully you will take that responsibility seriously so that everyone can enjoy a great day and feel safe on the water. Thanks!

Agreed, to a point. I can only speak for my own trip but we were clearly instructed by the staff to keep outside the boating channel and we did this to the best of our ability. One potential problem though is that the channels are not actually "clearly marked" from a viewpoint of 2-3 feet above the water in a kayak! It's a totally different perspective at that level. Also, some boat owners were travelling quite fast and creating large wakes when we were on the water. I guess there are rogue water users in every group of boaters, whatever the vessel...

Hi!
Planning on going to the Cape area end of August. Taking my kids and would love to experience kayaking or canoeing with them. Which one would be safer for my 9 and 13 yr old?

Kayaking is the easiest- between kayak, canoe, and paddle board. The 13 year old might like to try paddle boarding since it's a new sport & very popular right now- you could always rent a 2 solo kayaks and a paddle board, and the 9 & 13 year old could switch out & try both. Have fun!
