We took our Grandson here today while visiting Frankfort. The gentleman at the door was very helpful and knowledgeable. The museum was larger than I thought it would be and had lots of good stuff to see, especially considering it's free. I recommend it!

This is free unless you want to give a donation. There are exhibits in the building about Frankfort. If you have time check it out.

A small but interesting museum across from the Kentucky Historical Museum with helpful and friendly staff. Oh, and it’s free. You can’t beat that. They just completed a recent renovation that gives it a fresh look. Check out the exhibit on Civil Rights, the exhibit of old casting reels for all the fishermen out there, and the room upstairs showing a recreation of an old Frankfort diner. Nice. For Civil War buffs they have moved the old battered Union flag downstairs in better light where it is more visible,

My husband & I recently spent a day in Frankfort in order to learn about KY’s settlement and general history. We were headed to the Thomas D. Clark Center for KY History (reviewed separately), and when we saw that this museum was right at the parking lot, we decided to check it out. We were told the focus here is on Frankfort and Franklin County. It is a small museum but has some interesting exhibits and artifacts displayed on two floors. It took us only about 30 minutes to see it all, but that time spent looking around added to our knowledge of KY. Admission was free (donations accepted).

This great little museum celebrates the Kentucky state capital in all her glory. See exhibits dedicated to the local buildings, hometown celebrities, and so much more. It’s also part of the Kentucky Historical society’s tour, which allows you to see most of the towns museums for 1 low price.

This small free museum about Frankfort and Kentucky is worth a stop. Be sure to go upstairs to see lots of historic items. A stop at the Capital City Museum is a “capital idea.”

This museum in downtown Frankfort is full of fascinating exhibits, including, of course, about the bourbon industry, But I didn't know that Frankfort was once a center for custom-made fishing reels (the Meeks brothers and Benjamin Milam are notable early reel makers). There is a fascinating display of fishing reels, as well as the more "usual" historical paraphernalia. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and were the only people in the museum at that time, so spent some time chatting with the very personable young man at the desk. With Halloween coming up, we were talking about ghost tours (Buffalo Trace, the Gray Lady tour at Liberty Hall) and he shared some other local ghost stories with us, as well as general "visitor information" about Frankfort. Well worth a stop.

This is a self guided tour that doesn't cost anything. It is a 2 story building but it does have an elevator. This museum focuses mostly on the city's history/

Stopped here after our visit to the state capital building. Excellent small museum with interesting pieces and lots of history of the local area. Very friendly folks that work there as well. I enjoyed this more than the history center across the street that we paid to enter. This was a great museum and the admission was free.

Is it handicap accessible

Frankfort, KY
Yes, we have a ramp to enter and an elevator to the second floor of exhibits. The bathroom is handicap accessible as well. All of our exhibit materials meet ADA accomodations.

I was watching Russ Hatter's Frankfort Cemetery video last night when I overheard a reference to "small rocks placed on certain headstones."
That is a Jewish Tradition, in lieu of flowers. I ran across this tradition this morning while watching a movie called "Barney's Version", HDNMV Channel.
I enjoyed the documentary and hope to get involved in the Museum soon.

I found the reference on the Internet "cemetery traditions, placing small rocks on headstones".

Thank you, Wayne. Both the cemetery and City Museum are
interests of mine. In Ireland there are coins on monuments.
I serve on the cemetery Board of Trustees and work one day a week at the museum. Come see the museum, it is very interesting. Russ Hatter and John Downs are both great sources of information on Frankfort.
